This document discusses 3 types of opening title sequences (OTS) in films: linear OTS which let the story unfold and reveal characters and plot, non-linear OTS which contain short scenes relating to the plot to build it up and show settings, and symbolic OTS which don't show characters and use quick cuts and images related to but not revealing the plot. Examples of each type are provided.

2. Linear ots

• The story continues after the OTS has finished
• It reveals some of the characters in the film
• It reveals some of the plot

• These two films have a non-linear opening title sequence because
• They contain short scenes that relate to the movies plot
• It builds up the plot and shows some of the settings that will appear later in the film
• It shows the audience a little bit about the film

4. Symbolic ots
• These two films have a symbolic opening title sequence because
• They don't show any of the characters
• They use quick cuts and images related to the film
• Doesn't relate to the plot
• Doesn't give away any of the plot
• Shows items and creatures associated with the film
