An anesthesiologist is a doctor of medicine who concentrates in the medical specialty of anesthesiology. An anesthesiologist may be a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) or a Doctor of Medicine (MD). These medical experts have received specialized training in administering anesthesia to patients before and during different medical procedures and operations. Anesthesiologists utilize a wide range of anesthetics, from moderate numbing medicines to general anesthesia. Anesthesiologists must be well-versed not just in aesthetics, but also in pharmacology, physiology, and other disciplines directly related to giving anesthesia to patients and evaluating them throughout the operation. They must be able to monitor a patient's blood pressure, airways, and respiration rates, as well as their pulmonary and cardiovascular condition, throughout a medical operation. If any of these areas fail, an anesthesiologist must be able to resuscitate the patient or use other means to ensure the patient's recovery.
