3Critical Analysis of Desired Resources
Introduction
The study will discuss one primary source Newspaper cutting- “The Great Depression in
Australia”, one secondary source book - The Great Depression by Nicolas Brasch and one
documentary- Bread and Dripping- Clip 1- Raising children during the Great Depression.
Moreover, each of these sources will be critically analysed and all viewpoints will be
summarised as well. The entire study is based on The Great Depression in Australia1. The
entire study includes a lot of research regarding primary and secondary sources.
Discussion of Primary Source: ([Newspaper cutting] "The Great Depression in
Australia" Edited by Robert COOKSEY
Thecud.com.au,. 2015. 'The Cud On History — Looking Back On The Great Depression In
Australia | Thecud'. http://thecud.com.au/live/content/cud-history-%E2%80%94-looking-

This primary source is a newspaper cutting, which is in written form and is edited by Robert
Cooksey. The newspaper cutting is found online on the official website of “National Archives
of Australia”2. This is an edited version of the actual newspaper. The actual newspaper was
“Daily Mail” and this report was published on Friday, October 26, 1929. (Refer to Appendix
1.1).
Critical Analysis Primary Source: ([Newspaper cutting] "The Great Depression in
Australia" Edited by Robert COOKSEY
This edited version by Robert Cooksey has listed down almost all details of the actual
published paper. All the facts and negative elements that were going through that span of
time are listed down along with its overall reaction on the general people of Australia. The
article started with bang as in the first line itself Robert Cooksey clearly stated that the

Depression was not a ‘sudden rupture’ rather it was the worsening economic breakdown that
started in 1890’s. Robert Cooksey also showcased the fact that a official statistical record
indicated that the average unemployment percentage reached 29 % during the ‘The Great
Depression’ (Refer to Appendix 1). Moreover, Robert Cooksey also penned down the fact
that in the year of 1931, situations got even worse as 20 % was cut-down from the wages of
all workers3. This cut down policy was imposed by the Arbitration court4. However, the only
element missing from the edited version by Robert Cooksey is that it did not mentioned any
particular event from the newspaper, rather it had described the overall negativity faced by
people during ‘The Great Depression’5 (Refer to Appendix 1).

Nicolas Brasch wrote this book and entitled it as “The Great Depression”. This book was
published in the year of 2009 and its ISBN number is 9781740705998 (Refer to Appendix 2).
The book majorly covered detailed effects and causes of the depression that occurred in
Australia. Moreover, the book also covers the huge negative effect on the daily life of

ordinary Australians6. Nicolas Brasch has also mentioned the efforts that were made to
overcome the situation.
Critical Analysis of Secondary Source [Book]: (The Great Depression by Nicolas
Brasch)
The book starts with the introduction of actually what was the depression was all about. The
actual source and elements that lead to this depression is also elaborated. Then Nicolas
Brasch, highlighted the role of economic history with the depression7. The cause of the
depression is analysed in a detailed manner in the book. The book covered various elements
like the stock market crash in 1924- 1927, monetary contraction and panics of banks in
1930, the gold standard in 1931, international trade and lending in the mid 1920s 8. Nicolas
Brasch in his book also stated the sources of recovery from the depression and the economic
impact as well (Refer to Appendix 2). The book also contained two tables, one of which
summarised the Dates of the Great Depression in Various Countries and the other
highlighted the Peak-to-Trough Decline in Industrial Production in Various Countries.
However, the book also contained some primary sources of data but has not provided any
actual data and information regarding the period of depression. The actual impact on
economy due to the depression is far more than what is highlighted by Nicolas Brasch in the
book.

Discussion of Documentary – Bread and Dripping- Clip 1- Raising children during the
Great Depression
australianscreen,. 2015. 'Bread And Dripping'. http://aso.gov.au/titles/documentaries/bread-
and-dripping/clip1/.
The documentary shows Tibby Whalan and Eileen Pittman as they talk about raising
children during the period of the great depression (1929- 39) (Refer to Appendix 3).The clip
of the documentary shows the use of arrowroot biscuits and condensed milk in the diet of the
children. This is a short documentary of 2mins and 5 seconds, where various problems faced
by mothers in raising their children have been shown (Refer to Appendix 3). Bread and
Dripping is one of the finest examples of the type of documentary that is made by various
women Australian filmmakers amidst the period of 1970s and the early 1980s (Refer to
Appendix 3).
Critical Analysis of Documentary – Bread and Dripping- Clip 1- Raising children
during the Great Depression
The documentary starts with an old person stating her views and relating the hardship that has
been faced by her during raising her children in the span of depression 9. The documentary
also shows that children are wearing untidy and torn clothes (Refer to Appendix 3). Tibby
Whalan further escalates the reason behind this in the documentary as she says that mother’s
role was changed during the period of depression. All mothers were forced to work and earn
money, as men were not able to find jobs10. Moreover, the documentary also states that
mothers did not wanted to had too many children as they knew feeding and educating their
child was more than difficult during the depression. Eileen Pittman within the documentary
also highlighted the fact that they did not even have water service to wash clothes and drink.
Within the documentary, Eileen Pittman said, “It was quiet hard work as sometimes I had to

cook, wash, earn and feed children” (Refer to Appendix 3). The documentary also showed
the fact that 1932 was the period when most of the individual were unemployed as the
percentage of unemployment rose to 29 %. During this span, many women worked for very
low wages. However, the documentary was too short to point out the exact details of all the
highlighted factors and incidents.
Conclusion
The study concludes that people of Australia had faced many nightmares during the span of
“The Great Depression”. Mothers were forced to work and that too in very low wages, as
most of the men was unemployed. Moreover, the newspaper cutting also concludes the fact
that things became even worse during the span of 1929- 1931. Most of the families were
unable to feed their children in a proper manner. Education of children was ruined and most
of them did not even have wearable clothes.
