Orlistat is a drug used to treat obesity by preventing the absorption of fats from the diet. It works by inhibiting the pancreatic lipase enzyme needed to break down triglycerides from food. This prevents fatty acids from being absorbed and causes undigested fat to be excreted. Orlistat should be taken during or within an hour of eating a meal containing fat. Common side effects include oily rectal discharge and gastrointestinal issues like fatty/oily stool. It can interact with some other drugs so patients should discuss usage with their doctor.
