• Mabel Cook Cole
• Mabel Cook Cole (1846–1923) was a writer and anthropologist.
She specialized in the study of ancient man and in studying the
people of the Philippines. Her books include The Story of Primitive
Man, The Story of Man, Savage Gentleman, and Philippine Folk
Tales.

SETTING

SYNOPSIS
• There was a couple named Toglai and Toglibon who had two children. When those children
were old enough, they left their parents and never to come back. The only ones who
returned are the children of their own, the Spaniards and Americans. After that, Toglai and
Toglibon's other children left two by two after the death of their parents and because
drought struck. The couple who carried stones from Cibolan river went where the sun sets
and built a home there, they called themselves Maguindanau. The couple who carried
baskets went south and called themselves Baraan or Bilaan. All the tribes that formed from
these settlers are named after the objects that they've had carried. Another couple was left
on Mt. Apo, they were in near death situation but a stalk sugar cane was found that
quenched their thirst. Because of this, they are named Bagobo.
EXPOSITION
• There was a couple named Toglai and Toglibon who lives in Cibolan on My.
Apo. They had two children that left them soon after they have grown up.
RISING ACTION
• The people in Cibolan experienced drought because they've thought that
Manama is angry of them.
CLIMAX
• Because of the drought, people left Cibolan two by two. They've settled
villages and tribes on the place they went to and named it after the objects
that they've carried from Cibolan.
FALLING ACTION
• A couple who was left in Cibolan, Mt. Apo is near to death because of the
extreme thirst. But they have found a stalk of sugar cane that quenched their
thirst.
RESOLUTION
• They've built a settlement in Mt. Apo and their children were named Bagobo
because of it.
CONFLICT
• Man vs. Nature because the story said that the man punish by the gods /
manama.
THEME
• Learning to leave things behind can pave a way for new opportunities.
SYMBOLISM
• Spirits- symbolizes that the protagonists, Toglai and Toglibon died.
• Spaniards and Americans- symbolizes that they should look for a good place to live in. The
Spaniards and Americans also symbolize colonialism.
• Drought- symbolizes that the land of Cibolan dried up because of lack of rain that lasted for three
years.
