Origami is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding that originated in the 17th century in Japan and was later popularized worldwide in the mid-1900s. It has since evolved into a modern art form. While origami's exact origins are unknown due to lack of evidence, it has a long history in Japan as well as independent traditions that developed in other countries like China, Germany, Italy and Spain. Tools like bone folders and tweezers can help with complex folds, but origami can also be done using just the hands. Origami art includes both static designs as well as ones that incorporate movement. Computer programs now also exist to aid in the design and analysis of origami creations.

This Presentation introduces the various forms of Paper Sculpture Art types. Being the most loved paper art of the world, Paper Sculpting has major applications in AstroPhysics, Astronomy and Space Exploration.
Origami the ancient art of paper folding has a great effect now, not only on the form generation process but also in the development of deployable mechanisms and mimicking the folding systems in nature especially with the great progress in the geometry of folding and computer simulation of the folding process. So, it gains a great interest in the field of adaptive architecture, designing open spaces and product design, as it is a source of inspiration for designing configurable structures useful for shed systems that can adapt with the changes in the surrounding climate conditions, people’s needs and other surrounding environmental changeable conditions. Also, in the design of deployable products that could be packed easily in small spaces and get deployed when needed to save space and solve the contemporary problems of small multi-functional spaces. In this research, we try to suggest a methodology for designers to get benefit from this art in their designing process, depending on four main sections which are.
1- Literature review on the pioneers of this art & case studies on the application of it in design in the field of architecture, interior design and product design. 2- The basics of the geometry of folding. Basic terms, common folds and famous folding patterns have been briefly explained, as it is important to be familiar with the basics of folding to work fluently and quickly. 3- Computer programs that help in simulating the process of folding, this section provides highlights on the simulation of the folding process with computer programs specialized in such issues. Three chosen programs have been discussed which are Origamizer, Origami Editor 3D and Rhino + Grasshopper (plug-in) + Kangaroo or/and Crane (add-ons). 4- Methods of fabrication of foldable structures. Four fabrication methods for static folded structures and kinematic deployable structures have been discussed.
Research problem:
The need for a clear methodology for designers for applying the concept of origami in design, especially for deployable shelters.
Objectives:
Clarifying the concept of origami in design.
Suggesting a methodology with clear steps to get benefit from origami in the design of shelters.
Importance of the research:
Give a gestalt view of what is origami, its origins, and its potential as a design concept in generating design ideas.
Guiding designers in the design process of inspiring from origami without having previous deep knowledge about it.
Results:
Computer has great potentials in multidisciplinary work, especially after the invention of new computer programs that depends on algorithms in generating design solutions.

3. Misterious history
There is much speculation about the origin
of Origami. While Japan seems to have had
the most extensive tradition, there is
evidence of an independent tradition of
paperfolding in China, Germany, Italy and
Spain.
However, because of the problems
associated with preserving origami, there
are little evidence of its age or origins.
4. Tools
It is common to fold using a flat surface, but
some folders like doing it in the air with no
tools, especially when displaying the folding.
Many folders believe that no tool should be
used when folding. However a couple of tools
can help especially with the more complex
models.
5. For instance a
bone folder allows
sharp creases to
be made in the
paper easily, paper
clips can act as
extra pairs of
fingers, and
tweezers can be
used to make small
folds
6. Origami paper
Almost any laminar (flat) material can be used
for folding; the only requirement is that it should
hold a crease.
Origami paper, often referred to as "kami"
(Japanese for paper), is sold in prepackaged
squares of various sizes ranging from
2.5 cm (1 in) to 25 cm (10 in) or more.
7. Action origami
Origami not only covers still-life, there are also
moving objects; Origami can move in clever
ways. Action origami includes origami that flies,
or, when complete, uses the kinetic energy of a
person's hands, applied at a certain region on
the model, to move another flap or limb.
8. Origami-related computer programs
A number of computer aids to origami such as
TreeMaker and Oripa, have been devised.
Treemaker allows new origami bases to be
designed for special purposes and Oripa tries to
calculate the folded shape from the crease
pattern.
