3. Began in the late 19th century in Sweden
The actual term “orienteering” was first used in 1886 and ‘meant
the crossing of unknown land with the aid of a map and compass’.
Used in the military training in land navigation into a competitive
sport for military officers, then for civilians.
The first orienteering competition open to the public was held in
Norway in 1897.
Major Ernst Killander of Sweden is the father of orienteering.

physically and mentally fit especially at

given for the participants to visit
as many control points as
possible. (highest point wins)

must visit all the control points in
the sequence indicated on the
map in the fastest time possible.
