180 million people worldwide are visually impaired, with that number growing each year. Existing assistive technologies for the blind, such as canes and GPS devices, have disadvantages like a lack of information, discomfort, and inability to allow freedom of movement. Oriense is developing a lightweight, affordable solution called Oriense that uses 3D and RGB cameras with text and object recognition, as well as voice synthesis, to provide navigation assistance and detect obstacles for the visually impaired. With a cost of production between $250-350, Oriense aims to sell the product for $1000 and also offer it as a $50 per month service, targeting insurance companies, rehabilitation centers, and direct sales.
