The COVID-19 pandemic unleashed during 2020 implied a change in the way of doing archaeology on a global scale. In Argentina, in particular, activities had to move to the
domestic sphere and, most times, the possibility of carrying out fieldwork, material analysis and collection management in the usual workplaces was lost. This practice showed the need for repositories, libraries and online databases that would allow access to archaeological information. Suquía, the institutional repository of IDACOR, has been compiling and disseminating archaeological information since 2016, although it had not
yet developed its capacity to include databases that would allow meta-analysis of the information hosted. So, the needs raised by the lockdown led to implementing an action aimed at incorporating data from 1938 archaeological sites in the Province of Córdoba (Argentina) together with IDACORDIG (an implementation of the Arches software) which links this set to a spatial database, creating a gazetteer of archaeological sites for the region. This integration is the first of its kind in Argentina, and fosters an increase in primary information and grey literature visibility, together with publications preprints and
prints that allow continuity in the study of archaeology on a regional scale. In this presentation we will characterize this process and its technical aspects to aware on the potential of this type of platform for its integration into digital infrastructures of global impact.

Data Innovation Spaces are identified by BDVA as a key instrument to foster the Data-Driven Innovation in Europe. They provide innovation and experimentation environments where companies in their respective ecosystems could have their data-driven and AI-related products and solutions piloted, tested, and exploited before going to the market. BDVA launches every year a process to identify and recognize relevant initiatives in Europe that meet specific quality criteria in infrastructures, services, projects, and sectors of application, ecosystem and sustainability (BDVA i-Spaces call for labels).
During this session, we will present the concept of BDVA i-Spaces (as it is reflected in the BDVA SRIA), the process and steps of i-Spaces labeling, the value proposition of being an i-Space and activities and examples of collaboration. The session will also include examples of first-hand experience from three recognized i-Spaces: ITAINNOVA (DIH Aragon), UPM, and Demokritos NCSR (aheed DIH).

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated or made more visible many known inequalities across borders and societies. This includes access to archaeological resources, both physical and digital. As both the creators and users of archaeological data adapted to working from their homes, cut off from artefact collections and research data siloed within organisations and institutions, the importance of making data freely and openly

Experience within the ARIADNE partnership during the pandemic was largely positive, with many partners able to carry on as usual with accessing their digital resources, emphasising what is possible, while also emphasising what is not achievable
across archaeology, due to lack of capacity. ARIADNE and SEADDA invite papers discussing the challenges, opportunities and lessons learned across all aspects of archaeological data management during the pandemic, and how it may change and
inform our best practice going forward. We particularly invite papers from outside of Western Europe on how the COVID-19 pandemic created barriers or opportunities for accessing archaeological resources, so that we may better understand capacity building during a post-COVID era.

Eaa2021 476 preserving historic building documentation pakistanariadnenetwork
Like many countries around the world, Pakistan was forced to go into a COVID-19 national lockdown in March 2020. While this confined most people to their homes, it also had the unintended consequence of catapulting many institutions into embracing going digital. At the National College of Arts (NCA), Pakistan’s oldest art school, this meant embracing online tools and digital resources that had previously been resisted or under utilized in the teaching of art, design, and architecture. The experiences of
lockdown have highlighted inadequacies and inequities within our systems, and as Pakistan returns to normal there is a renewed will to maintain the momentum gained during the pandemic, and an increased realization of the need for developing and sustaining digital infrastructures. The National College of Arts Archives collect and preserve the records, manuscripts, and other artefacts of historical and archaeological
significance at the National College of Arts. From March 2021, the NCA Archives are initiating a project to collect, preserve, and digitize historic building documentation created at the NCA over the past 145 years. This paper will follow this process and
document the NCA Archive’s attempt at creating a Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) database of historic building documentation in Pakistan. It will summarize the experiences of the six-month pilot project, including opportunities that have arisen in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, and in light of the Government of Pakistan’s ongoing Digital Pakistan initiative. The paper will also document and analyze the difficulties and hurdles that might emerge during the course of the project as the NCA Archive’s digital infrastructure is built from the ground up in a post-colonial setting and a post-COVID world.

Presentation given by Claudia Marinica of theUniversity of Cergy-Pontoise at the ARIADNE winter school about work on supporting Semantic Interoperability in the Conservation-Restoration Domain in the PARCOURS project. The presentation discusses the challenges of achieving interoperability between the various databases existing within the domain and the work that is being carried out to build an ontology based system for data integration.
Eaa2021 476 ways and capacity in archaeological data management in serbiaariadnenetwork
Over the past year and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the entire world has witnessed inequalities across borders and societies. They also include access to archaeological resources, both physical and digital. Both archaeological data creators and users spent a lot of time working from their homes, away from artefact collections and research data. However, this was the perfect moment to understand the importance of making data
freely and openly available, both nationally and internationally.
This is why the authors of this paper chose to make a selection of data bases from various institutions responsible for preservation and protection of cultural heritage, in
order to understand their policies regarding accessibility and usage of the data they keep. This will be done by simple visits to various web-sites or data bases. They intend to check on the volume and content, but also importance of the offered archaeological heritage. In addition, the authors will estimate whether the heritage has adequately been classified and described and also check whether data is available in foreign languages. It needs to be seen whether it is possible to access digital objects (documents and the accompanying metadata), whether access is opened for all users or it requires a certain
hierarchy access, what is the policy of usage, reusage and distribution etc. It remains to be seen whether there are public API or whether it is possible to collect data through API.
In case that there is a public API, one needs to check whether datasets are interoperable or messy, requiring data cleaning.
After having visited a certain number of web-sites, the authors expect to collect enough data to make a satisfactory conclusion about accessibility and usage of Serbian archaeological data web bases.

How can information be opened up within an organisation? The National Gallery was faced with a series of different systems, all holding data related to the collection - but speaking to each other only intermittently. This issue was solved with the installation of a middleware system to combine and deliver data from these eight different data sources as a seamless whole.
Our paper will look at the implications this has had for how we work with our data, and as an organisation. We will also touch upon the benefits of opening information up within our organisation, and some projects that are currently using - or are planning to use - our data, which will be delivered using established, open standards.

As in many countries, the audiovisual heritage of Flanders is spread over many actors of very different kinds: libraries, archives, museums, universities, government bodies, arts institutions, private persons, ... but for the vast majority also at broadcasters: regional, commercial and public. Also the challenges will be recognizable to many: carrier degradation, playback technology obsolescence, digital preservation and a sharply increased demand for access by audiences such as education, scientific research, professional media producers and the general public. In 2012 the Flemish government therefore decided to found a new institution: VIAA, the Flemish Institute for Archiving. VIAA does not act as a centralizing body, but as a service provider for already 150 Flemish organisations who manage a significant audiovisual archive. VIAA’s offers its partners free digitisation of their audiovisual material and sustainable digital storage at a very small fee per terabyte. In exchange, VIAA can offer the material on its own, dedicated platforms, e.g. for teachers to use audiovisual materials in the classroom.
This presentation will provide more detail about the VIAA-model, but it will also compare this model with other situations and approaches in several European countries. This way we hope to offer a few high level templates of what a national audiovisual heritage landscape can look like and which place broadcasters archives can take in those.

ORCID presentation for the Portuguese research information management community at the Jornadas FCT-FCCN in Évora. Following the FCT initiative for ensuring researchers in Portugal.register with ORCID, new opportunities are arising for integrating ORCID into different research information systems in the country. The presentation shows the current state of ORCID and the integration initiatives taking place for different stakeholders such as funders, publishers or institutions.
This presentation, delivered at the UKCoRR Members Meeting at the Open University Milton Keynes on Dec 3rd, 2013, provides an update of the evolution of ORCID implementation with specific emphasis in the UK, highlighting the opportunities the identifier offers to repositories and CRIS systems and the challenges that universities need to address when planning to adopt ORCID at institutional level.
This presentation on CRIS/IR integration and/or interoperability was delivered within the Open Access Week 2013 events organised by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) and the Spanish University Library Network (REBIUN). It addresses the ever growing integration of institutional CRIS systems and repositories into a single research information management workflow -- also known by other name as "repository embedding". A number of examples are provided for this platform integration in the UK and Spain, and emphasis is placed on the benefits that such interoperability offers for increasing the effectivity in collecting and exposing institutional Open Access contents. A final reflection is added on what steps need to be taken next in order to promote a harmonised approach to research information exchange across institutions.
The presentation provides a general UKRepNet project overview, plus a description of the highly fragmented landscape for CRIS/IR implementation at UK HEIs. Finally, a brief description is offered of the current work the project is jointly carrying out with the University of St Andrews and the Scottish Digital Library Consortium (SDLC) for enhancing the University's CRIS/IR system.

ePoster presented at the Berlin10 Open Access Conference (Stellenbosch, South Africa, Nov 7-8, 2012). Abstract: The UK RepositoryNet+ Project (RepNet) has been funded by the JISC (UK Joint Information Systems Committee) to design, develop and implement a whole range of new services for the UK Institutional Repository (IR) Network, including support for new Open Access publishing models for research papers. Following its launch at the Open Repositories 2012 Conference (OR12) last July, the RepNet is now rolling out initial Wave 1 services and specifying Wave 2 services which together will represent a comprehensive suite of tools to support Open Access publishing through the Institutional Repository network developed by JISC. The RepNet Project, being run through the EDINA National Data Centre in Edinburgh, has integrated existing components and services and will be providing new ones to fill in the needs identified through a gap analysis process. Some preliminary needs analysis has already been held with different stakeholders involved in Open Access publishing – such as funders, repository managers and STM publishers. This design phase is will be followed by a first RepNet dissemination programme for repository managers and other members of the Open Access community, with a series of events to be held in order to promote discussion and collect feedback. This poster will show the background to the funding of the project, the methodology followed to map the academic publishing landscape and establish user requirements, the process followed to develop the components catalogue, and the new services for the UK repository network the project aims to develop within its project funding through July 2013.
The present BAD webinar aims to introduce the ORCID standard to the Information Science community in Portugal.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
