Pecha Kucha presentation by the Sonex workgroup at the Repository Fringe 2010 (Edinburgh, Sep 3rd, 2010). The JISC-supported Scholarly Output Notification and Exchange (SONEX) workgroup was established at the International Repositories Workshop (Amsterdam, Mar'09) for analysing and dealing with interoperability issues underlying strategies for populating repositories. After JISC Deposit call for funding deposit-related projects was released last March, the role of the SONEX workgroup widened for including coordination and eventual support for resulting projects, as well as surveillance of deposit-related initiatives worldwide. Strategies for handling interoperability issues in the repository environment along SONEX rst year of work are summarized in this paper, along with future lines of work for the SONEX initiative.

ICOS: Integrated Carbon Observation System Open data to open our eyes to clim...

ICOS is a pan-European research infrastructure (RI) for observing and understanding the greenhouse gas (GHG) balance of Europe and its adjacent regions. The major task of ICOS is to collect and make available in a transparent manner, the high-quality observational data from its state-of-the-art measurement stations. These ICOS data – from atmosphere, ecosystem and ocean stations – will contribute to research aiming to describe and understand the present state of the global carbon cycle. The Carbon Portal will be the virtual data center that present the data products and make it available. This presentation will briefly present the work of ICOS and the Carbon Portal towards open data with FAIR principles. ICOS has an open data policy with free use, requesting the user to give appropriate credit (Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 ). The Carbon Portal is developing a data catalogue using an ontology based on a semantic metadata description. This will make it possible to integrate ICOS observations with data from other RI’s as well with data of global networks. For integration, the Carbon Portal is actively following the developments of international standards for eg. metadata and data citation.

Science Clusters and EOSC
The EOSC Future project coordinates five European Science Clusters that connect major research infrastructures to the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). The Science Clusters provide FAIR data and services to research communities in environmental sciences, life sciences, physical sciences and astronomy, materials science, and social sciences and humanities. They make cluster services available across disciplines and help researchers practice open science in EOSC through open data archives, computing and networking resources. The Science Clusters aim to sustainably support interdisciplinary research on issues like climate change and pandemics. They request basic and user-friendly services from EOSC to ensure it is a reliable and usable platform for the long term.

ePoster presented at the Berlin10 Open Access Conference (Stellenbosch, South Africa, Nov 7-8, 2012). Abstract: The UK RepositoryNet+ Project (RepNet) has been funded by the JISC (UK Joint Information Systems Committee) to design, develop and implement a whole range of new services for the UK Institutional Repository (IR) Network, including support for new Open Access publishing models for research papers. Following its launch at the Open Repositories 2012 Conference (OR12) last July, the RepNet is now rolling out initial Wave 1 services and specifying Wave 2 services which together will represent a comprehensive suite of tools to support Open Access publishing through the Institutional Repository network developed by JISC. The RepNet Project, being run through the EDINA National Data Centre in Edinburgh, has integrated existing components and services and will be providing new ones to fill in the needs identified through a gap analysis process. Some preliminary needs analysis has already been held with different stakeholders involved in Open Access publishing – such as funders, repository managers and STM publishers. This design phase is will be followed by a first RepNet dissemination programme for repository managers and other members of the Open Access community, with a series of events to be held in order to promote discussion and collect feedback. Webinar: Designing a schema for a Data Warehouse

A data warehouse is a central relational database that contains all measurements about a business or an organisation. This data comes from a variety of heterogeneous data sources, which includes databases of any type that back the applications used by the company, data files exported by some applications, or APIs provided by internal or external services.
But designing a data warehouse correctly is a hard task, which requires gathering information about the business processes that need to be analysed in the first place. These processes must be translated into so-called star schemas, which means, denormalised databases where each table represents a dimension or facts.

The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community.
