This document provides an overview of Westward expansion in the United States between 1840-1900 through a series of images and captions. It describes how expansion was driven by the idea that Americans had a divine right to settle the West with Protestant values. Hundreds of thousands travelled west along trails like the Oregon Trail, facing many hardships along the way. The completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 made travel much easier. Settlement of the West involved conflicts with Native Americans, the development of industries like mining and cattle ranching, and the influence of diverse populations including Chinese and Mexican workers.
