An open pit mine is an excavation made at the surface of the ground to extract ore throughout the life of the mine. Large quantities of waste rock must be excavated and relocated to access and mine the ore below. Planning an open pit mine involves complex engineering decisions that are constrained by geological and engineering factors but aimed at exploiting the mineral deposit at the lowest cost to maximize profits. Ore and waste are removed from the pit in successive layers on benches, or ledges, with several benches potentially operating at different elevations within the pit at one time.
