The document discusses various load balancing architectures for online reporting databases, including simple online/offline paired databases on a single server, distributed refresh across multiple reporting servers organized into groups, logshipping from one or more primary databases to multiple reporting servers, and scalable shared databases that maximize server resource usage. It provides advantages and disadvantages of each approach, as well as suggestions for management considerations like monitoring, logging, and testing when implementing these architectures.

Introduction to Database Benchmarking with Benchmark FactoryMichael Micalizzi
When you are faced with making changes to your database environment such as upgrades, patches, hardware installation or virtual machine implementations, there are inherent risks that database performance or availability can suffer.
Oracle ACE and author Bert Scalzo will show how to reduce these risks and demonstrate how Benchmark Factory can help you scale your database for best possible results.
Critical Preflight Checks for Your EPM ApplicationsDatavail
The environment which houses your business critical EPM applications is complex.
Maybe as complex as the cockpit of an aircraft. Just as a pilot might not be able to build or fix everything on their plane, you might be using applications but not know how to build or fix everything that’s being used. This shouldn’t stop you from doing a pre-flight check to ensure that all your Hyperion systems are running properly and set for you and your end users.
Let’s talk about some different strategies to achieve this and give you the confidence in your systems so that you can know when things are running well—or more importantly, when they need attention before takeoff.

Building the Perfect SharePoint 2010 Farm - SPS Brisbane 2011Michael Noel
SharePoint 2010 has matured over the past year, with improvements in scalability, enterprise search, and administration. Best practices from SharePoint 2007 are no longer relevant, and new guidance has emerged from the last year worth of SharePoint deployments. In addition, new features such as SharePoint FAST Search capabilities can have a significant effect on how an environment is architected. In addition, the popularity of server virtualization technologies have created new design options for SharePoint administrators, allowing for new and unique high availability and provisioning options. This session goes right to the heart of the matter, providing for physical and virtual architecture guidelines and specific configuration settings that can immediately be used to construct SharePoint 2010 environments that can be used to replace existing SharePoint 2007 farms. Architectural specifics are based on best practices obtained from existing SharePoint 2010 environments of multiple sizes and performance metrics gathered from both physical and virtual SQL Server and SharePoint environments will help you to build the ‘perfect’ SharePoint 2010 farm for your organization.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

18. Logshipped One or more Logshipped Primary (HeadNodes) refreshes Ships logs to two or more (groups) of Reporting servers. Use db snapshots to present the data. Standalone server (for emergency situations) Advantages Disadvantages
21. Scalable Shared Disks Maximizes use of server resources Requires less total SAN space but it must be fast MSDN recommends a max of 8 servers per db Requires at least two sets of disk (R, and R/W) Maybe 4 if maintenance needs are big
23. A brief mention of Some Other Options Federation Lots of good resources online Complicated (split databases horizontally to allow processing queries on multiple servers) AlwaysOn Mirroring with up to 4 readable replicas Not really a scaling solution, more of a great way to use your BCP hardware.
