ONGC has started exploratory drilling off the coast of Kochi, India to depths of 6,500 meters, which would be the deepest exploration in the region. The exploration requires Rs. 400 crore and will take 6-7 years to determine if there are commercially viable oil or gas reserves. Past exploratory wells in the region found indications of hydrocarbons but no large commercial fields. The current deep drilling aims to better understand the oil and gas potential under the seabed rocks. If resources are found, it would represent a major boost to India's energy security.
