MAHLE has developed three advanced systems for measuring engine oil consumption: the Radiometric system, Sulfur Trace system, and Mass Spectrometer system. These systems utilize tracer elements in the oil or directly detect oil molecules to accurately measure oil consumption. The Radiometric system uses tritium as a tracer and has excellent repeatability. The Sulfur Trace system detects sulfur dioxide in real time. The Mass Spectrometer system does not require a tracer and can make cylinder-selective measurements with high dynamic response. Accurate oil consumption measurement is important for optimizing engines to meet emissions and fuel efficiency goals.
