THE SACRIFICE HOW PRO-PALESTINE PROTESTS STUDENTS ARE SACRIFICING TO CHANGE T...indexPub
The recent surge in pro-Palestine student activism has prompted significant responses from universities, ranging from negotiations and divestment commitments to increased transparency about investments in companies supporting the war on Gaza. This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.

(This presentation provides a brief overview of ODYSSEYWARE to students. It may be edited as needed.)(Presenter notes and scripted speaking points are included in the notes section at the bottom of each slide.)Presenter notes are in (parentheses)Scripted speaking points are in bold(You may want to print this presentation in handout or note format.)
Welcome to ODYSSEYWARE Orientation. Today, we will go over the basics of how you use ODYSSEYWARE so you can get started using it in class and on your own. Before we get into how you use it, let’s talk about what it is in the first place.(Next slide)
What is ODYSSEYWARE?Simply, it is school on the web.(You may choose to ask students questions that invite discussion such as:How many of you use the Internet? What do you like to do on the Internet? Why do you like the Internet? What kinds of things would you like to do on the Internet if you could?(Field questions, encourage discussion and have fun with students.)(Next slide)
We’ve talked about some of the things you like to do on the Internet. Here’s what I think you’ll like about ODYSSEYWARE. The lessons you will be doing have a lot of the things you like about the Internet such as games, cool videos, and interesting things to read and listen to.So it’s schoolwork and it’s a fun way to do it!(Next slide)
Now here’s the really cool thing. A couple of minutes ago I told you that ODYSSEYWARE is school on the web right? What that means is that you can do your work pretty much anywhere you have the Internet. Like home, the library, stores, and restaurants.(If appropriate, make sure everyone knows what WIFI hotspots are and that anytime they see this logo, there is an Internet connection available.)ODYSSEYWARE also works on many cell phones and tablets, again, if you have the Internet on it. It won’t work on all devices but if you have one, you should check to see if it works. One other thing I want you to know is that since ODYSSEYWARE is on the Internet, it’s available to you 24 hours 7 days a week, all year round so feel free to work on your assignments anytime you want. I like this because it makes it flexible. You work on your own schedule. Just make sure you get your work done on time ok?(Next slide)
Ok, we’ve talked about what ODYSSEYWARE is, and where and when you can use it.There are 3 things you need to know about HOW to use ODYSSEYWARE.(Next slide)
Take out a piece of paper or make a new note in your phone or other device, number it 1-3 and give yourself some space to write or type beneath each number.(Allow students time to get their “notepad” ready)Under Number 1 write down “How to log in”Under Number 2 write down “How to do assignments”Under Number 3 write down “How to track my progress”(Give students a few moments to accomplish this task)(Next slide)
First, let’s talk about how to login to the program.Write down the website URL I have placed here on the screen. You’re going to need it to do your assignments. You might want to bookmark this website on your computer so it’s easy to find when you need it.(According to need, you may want to discuss how to bookmark a URL)Each of you will be assigned a username and password that you will use to access the site. When you come to the login screen you will need to enter your login ID here and your Password here. Then, click the Login button here.Once you’re logged in, the first thing you’ll see is your home page where you can see your upcoming assignments. And that brings us to number 2.(Next slide)
Starting assignments is super easy. In the Assignments Due box, you’ll get a list of the assignments that are due next. To start an assignment, all you have to do is click on the assignment you want to work on and it will open immediately.(Next slide)
Here’s an example of a typical lesson in ODYSSEYWARE. There will be an introduction with the objectives for the lesson, followed by vocabulary. The rest of the lesson will have stuff to read, games to play, activities to do, and questions to answer.Make sure you answer ALL the questions for ALL sections within the assignment.(Highlight the Section 1 tab at the top and let students know they will sometimes have more than one section they have to complete.)To submit an answer, click the Submit Answer button. When you have answered all the questions and you’re ready to turn in your assignment, click the Submit Lesson button at the top of the screen. To pass a lesson, you need to get (PERCENTAGE)% or better. If you don’t pass the assignment, you will need to do it again. That’s no fun so make sure you pay attention the first time around!(Field any questions students have about how to do lessons.)(Next slide)
Ok, now that you know how to log in and how do lessons in ODYSSEYWARE, let me show you how to keep track of what you’ve done.Start by clicking the My Courses tab. If your school is using the Planner, that’s probably what will show up first. The Planner gives you a big picture view of all of your ODYSSEYWARE work all on one page. You will see:Overdue work – Shows schoolwork that is past dueSchoolwork – Shows the next assignments you need to completeUpcoming – Shows the assignments which will be due in the next 5 daysOverall Progress – Shows the progress you’ve made in each of your ODYSSEYWARE courses, along with your total score in each course.(Next slide)
To see all of your current progress in each of your courses, click on the Courses tab.You will see listed each of the ODYSSEYWARE courses you are enrolled in.If you click on a course, the units open below it. If you click on a unit, you’ll see each of the assignments along with your total score. You can click on any assignment to review it after you’ve completed it.(Field any questions about how to access courses and track progress in the program)
