This document discusses the link between obesity and cancer in women. It notes that obesity rates have doubled globally since 1970 and are a leading cause of preventable cancer. Several studies are cited showing higher cancer incidence and mortality rates among obese populations. Obesity can increase cancer risk through higher estrogen levels, insulin resistance, chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. The document recommends maintaining a healthy lifestyle through diet, exercise, sleep and stress management to reduce obesity and cancer risk. It emphasizes the need for awareness among women in India about this health issue.

developed ANAL CANCER at age 28 years
This prompted us to join women awareness

5. OBESITY Pandemic
“AN EMERGING MENACE”
1. > 1.46 Billion overweight
2. > 300 Million – Obese
3. 26% of non pregnant women
ages 20 – 39 are overweight /

6. PREVALENCE OF OBESITY
is on increase – many fold!! ( 1986 – 2000 )
1. BMI > 30 kg / m2
- doubled
2. Morbid Obesity > 40 kg /m2
quadrupled
3.Super Obesity > 50 kg /m2 –
five fold Increase

7. Indians constitute a huge chunk of
OBESITY
“one in three”
adults in India are obese
8. IMPACT OF OBESITY ON
LONGEVITY
• 2.5 million deaths attributed annually to
obesity
• Direct relationship between increasing BMI
and relative risk of dying prematurely
Nurses health studyNurses health study
• In morbidly obese life expectancy is
reduced by
9 yrs in women
12 yrs in men

10. Obesity is The Root Cause of Some
of the Serious Diseases
Metabolic Disorders
• In Indians , types 2 diabetes and
hypertension has a close link to
obesity
• 60 million people suffered from
diabetes in 2012 and will exceed
100 million by 2030
• People with BMI >35.0 kg/m have
a 6-fold higher risk of diabetes
11. Globally .obesity is responsible for
the CARDIOVASCULAR co-
morbidities taking heavy toll both
in men and women
12. NOW ROBUST DATA IS OCCUMULATING that
Obesity is also The Root Cause of Some of the
Serious Disease like cancer
CANCER
•Obese women showed more
than two times higher rate of
breast cancer as compared with
their normal weight
counterpart
13. Obesity is Taking Heavy Toll on
Women’s Cancer
7-40%of obese patients
have cancer like
breast ,
Endometrium,
Colon & Rectum,
Kidney,
Pancreas etc
14. There is a direct link
between Obesity and
cancer,
National cancer Institute, USA
16. Cancer & Insulin Resistance
• “Both obesity and cancer result from body
losing its ability to burn fat as fuel.
• Obesity is linked to excess levels of insulin
circulating in blood and this can stimulate
harmful cell proliferation.
• It also increases oxidative stress levels in
overweight people, increasing risk of
cancer.
17. Cancer & Estrogen in
Obese Women
In women, obesity exposes them to higher
estrogen levels because estrogen is
produced in fat tissue. Obese women
therefore have more estrogen, which can
lead o insulin resistance and the
development of more fat tissue, which
produces even more estrogen, making it a
vicious cycle that raises the risk of
estrogen-sensitive cancer.
18. How to obesity causes cancer ?
May be different explanation for each
type of cancer; however the overall
explanation is that obesity triggers
changes in bodily functions, which can
lead to harmful cell growth and cell
division… Leading to cancer.
20. STUDY 1
A 16-year-long study on more than 900,00
Americans found that obese participants were
more likely to be diagnosed and die from cancer,
compared to those of normal weight, accounting
for 14% of cancer deaths in men and 220 % in
women
The New England Journal of Medicine
21. STUDY 2
A report published in The Journal Cancer
Research projects:
cancer incidence and deaths due to cancer
will continue to rise over the next decade
and a half, largely due to rising obesity in
population
22. STUDY 3
A study involving 800,000 Breast Cancer
patients found that premenopausal
women with BMI over 30 had a 21.5%
chance of dying of cancer whereas
women with average BMI had 16.6%
chance of dying
23. STUDY 4
A JAMA study: found that those who
consumed 21% or more of their daily
calories in the form of sugar were twice as
likely to die from heart disease compared
to those who got 7 % or less of their daily
calories from added sugar
24. There are no Indian studies on the
subject, research done abroad is
relevant to us as well as we are
increasingly following West in
terms of diet.
The number of obese women in India
has increased exponentially and
awareness must be created among
them.
25. Unless obese individuals make appropriate
dietary changes,
OBESITY COULD SOON OVERTAKE
TOBACCO AS THE TOP CAUSE OF
CANCER.
26. • BMI (Body Mass Index)
= Weight in kg / Height in M2
• Waist : Hip Ratio

32. Take Home Messages
• The prevalence has obesity ha doubled since 1970 &
so is the cancer in obese women
• In obese women metabolic , cardiovascular co –
morbidities like diabetes hypertension are well
known taking increasing death toll in women too:
• Now robust data suggest obesity could
increase cancers specially in women,
like breast, uterus, rectum & colon.
33. Take Home Messages
• Obese people are at risk of cancer
specially women, Doctor’s advice
dietary & life style changer to reduce
threat
• If obese people do not loose weight
-OBESITY COULD SOON
OVERTAKE TOBACCO AS
THE TOP CAUSE OF CANCER.
