2. Presentation Outline
• Epidemiology
• Definitions in Hypertension
• Types of Hypertension
• Evaluation of Secondary HTN
• Approach to Hypertension
• Ideal BP Measurement Technique
3. WHITE COAT
HYPERTENSION
a syndrome whereby a patient's
feeling of anxiety in a medical
environment results in an abnor-
mally high reading when their
blood pressure is measured.
9. Isolated Systolic Hypertension
• Not distinguished as a separate entity as far as
management is concerned.
• SBP should be primarily considered during
treatment and not just diastolic BP.
• Systolic BP is more important cardiovascular risk
factor after age 50.
• Diastolic BP is more important before age 50.
11. Hypertension great Killer of
Premature deaths
• The largest proportion of NCD deaths is
caused by cardiovascular diseases (50%).
• Hypertension is reported to be the fourth
contributor to premature death in developed
countries and the seventh in developing
countries.
13. Summary
• White coat HTN average prevalence is ~20% up to
35%.
• Major clinical relevance of white coat HTN: typically
associated with minimal to only slightly increased risk
of CVD & all-cause mortality risk.
• Do not forget :-
60% to 70% for detection as white coat HTN have true
hypertension & need monitoring & treatment
