In a recent release, the AICR publicized a new study which found
that nearly half a million cancer cases around the world are due to
the increasing rates of obesity. The study, published inThe Lancet
Oncology, reported that 481,000 of the new adult cancer cases
worldwide in 2012 were promoted by high BMI, which means that

Partially funded by theWorld Cancer Research Fund (WCRF)
International, the study also found that obesity-related cancers--
including post-menopausal breast, colorectal, and ovarian cancer-
-more commonly impact women. The researchers additionally
compared 12 geographical regions and noted that almost 25
percent of obesity-related cancer cases occurred in North
America. The link between obesity and cancer could mean that
there will be an increased cancer burden in regions like Latin
America and NorthAfrica, where obesity rates have increased the
most in the last 30 years.
