My presentation from the Northern Grid Conference 2012. I put the case for the teaching of social media skills in schools from the earliest age as essential literacy skills. The consequences of not doing so are that students may enter the world ill-equipped to communicate effectively or worse, in danger of damaging their reputations or inadvertantly committing criminal acts.

However, learning environments struggle to embed authentic real world learning and build capacity for global connection and collaboration. Julie shares new perspectives on developing a Global Collaborator Mindset and implementing Online Global Collaborative Learning (OGCL) as a pedagogical approach.

The Social Impact Award honors individuals who promote the application of human-computer interaction research for pressing social needs. This year the award was given to Ben Bederson and Allison Druin of the University of Maryland for their joint work in developing the International Children’s Digital Library and their individual work in developing new methods that give children a voice in the development of new technologies, and for their work on electronic voting systems.

Cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT) has been used in writing studies for the last twenty years. In the mid-1990s, it offered a solution to a methodological problem that the field faced. But 20 years later, the field faces new methodological challenges. Can CHAT keep up?
