INTRODUCTION
Nvidia Corporation is an American technology
company incorporated in Delaware and based in
Santa Clara, California. It designs graphics
processing units for the gaming and professional
markets, as well as system on a chip units for the
mobile computing and automotive market.
In the early 1990s, the three co-founders hypothesized that the proper
direction for the next wave of computing would be accelerated or graphics
based. They believed that this model of computing could solve problems that
general-purpose computing fundamentally couldn't. They also observed that
video games were some of the most computationally challenging problems, but
would have incredibly high sales volume. With a capital of $40,000, the
company was born. The company initially had no name and the co-founders
named all their files NV, as in "next version". The need to incorporate the
company prompted the co-founders to review all words with those two letters,
leading them to "invidia", the Latin word for "envy"
COMPANY HISTORY
Founders and initial investment
Three people co-founded Nvidia in April 1993:
Jensen Huang (CEO as of 2018), a Taiwanese American, previously director of
CoreWare at LSI Logic and a microprocessor designer at Advanced Micro
Devices(AMD)
Chris Malachowsky, an electrical engineer who worked at Sun Microsystems
Curtis Priem, previously a senior staff engineer and graphics chip designer at
Sun Microsystems
The company received $20 million of venture capital funding from Sequoia
Capital and others.
PRESENT CEO -Jensen Huang
Chris Malachowsky2nd Co-Founder
Chris Malachowsky is an American electrical
engineer, one of the founders of computer graphics
company Nvidia. Raised in Oakhurst, Ocean
Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey,
Malachowsky graduated from Ocean Township High
School in 1976.
3rd Co-Founder - Curtis Priem
Curtis R. Priem is an American computer scientist. He
received a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1982. He designed the
first graphics processor for the PC, the IBM Professional
Graphics Adapter.
NVIDIA has grown from a three-person start-up into a
global company. We recently set out to build a new
campus that will suit our expanding company and vision.
Standing at the intersection of science and art — just
like our work in visual computing — the new NVIDIA
headquarters will capture the ambition and imagination
of our people.
PRODUCT AND SERVICES
NVIDIA has developed four product brands to meet the needs of specific market
segments :
Tegra: The Mobile Super Chip
With deep experience in visual and parallel computing, NVIDIA is well positioned
to drive the mobile computing revolution. Today, the most personal computers
are mobile computers. Tegra, a mobile super chip, is powering the next
generation of mobile devices, as well as in-car safety and infotainment systems.
The Tegra 2 chip firmly established NVIDIA as a major player in mobile
computing. With Tegra 3, NVIDIA is building on its technology leadership. Tegra
3's 4-PLUS-1™ quad-core architecture provides both exceptional processing power
and great battery life. It does this by using four powerful CPU cores to handle
demanding tasks, such as gaming, and a fifth low-power, battery-saver core to
manage less strenuous tasks
GeForce: Helping Gamers
Enjoy Games
Our heritage is in PC graphics, and our GeForce
processors deliver amazing visual experiences to the
thriving gaming community around the world. The PC
gaming market is expected to reach $25B in 2016.
Millions of gamers attend events like Gamescom,
Dreamhack, Blizzcon and China Joy every year. And
gaming is one of the most popular activities in China's
160,000+ icafes. Gamers can enjoy fully immersive
worlds with innovations that complement GeForce, such
as NVIDIA® PhysX® for thrilling, realistic effects, and the
NVIDIA® 3D Vision™ suite of technologies, including
active-shutter glasses, for stereo 3D.
Quadro: The Standard for Professional
Graphics
NVIDIA Quadro GPUs help most of the world’s industrial
designers bring their visions to life. They rely on
photorealistic renderings — like this one of the McLaren
P1— to create their designs without physical models.
Quadro performs ray-tracing algorithms that generate
such images. Everything from shampoo bottles to jumbo
jets are created with software that runs on Quadro.
We surprised the world with the announcement of
Project SHIELD at CES 2013. Project SHIELD is a
portable that lets gamers play both Android and PC
games with the benefits of a console-grade
controller, a five-inch retinal screen, and
exceptional sound from tuned port, bass reflex
speakers.
Tesla: Accelerating Science
NVIDIA's expertise in programmable GPUs led to
breakthroughs in parallel processing. Scientists and
researchers around the world are using Tesla GPUs to
tackle the most complex challenges, from climate
modeling to quantum physics to finding a cure for
cancer. NVIDIA® CUDA® architecture enables GPUs to
work not just with the pixels of an image, but with
numerical data. NVIDIA Tesla processors harness CUDA to
make supercomputing more efficient and more
accessible. Three of the top five supercom¬puters are
powered by Tesla GPUs. And on the November 2011 list
of Top500 supercomputers, the number of NVIDIA GPU-
powered systems more than tripled in just a year, to 35.
Visual computing is making movies more immersive
and imaginative. NVIDIA is playing a major role. 2013
marked the fourth year in a row when all films
nominated for the Best Visual Effects Academy Award
were created on Quadro GPUs, including Oscar-
winner, Life of Pi.
The fastest growing R&D budget, the research firm said, is over at Intel’s Silicon Valley
neighbor, Nvidia, whose nearly $1.8 billion R&D investment in 2017 topped its 2016
numbers by 23 percent.
Everyone is dwarfed by Intel, but Nvidia is also near the front of the pack in
percentages, dumping over 20% of revenue back into R&D. Nice to see that crypto
price inflating trend contributing to more R&D
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
Researchers at Plymouth University are driving the
emergence of humanoid robots by modeling biological
neural networks. These networks consist of thousands of
neurons connected to each other through millions of
synapses. The systems integrate visual processing,
linguistics and other inputs such as touch, temperature
and position. GPUs perform the millions of calculations
needed to activate the neural network every 50-100
milliseconds.
As of right now, nvidia has the high-end high-margin market while amd has
the lower end budget/mid range market. If you want a budget rig go for the
rx470, if you want a mid range go for the rx480, and after that there are the
nvidia cards siting on top ( 1060 170 180) both in terms of performance and
price.
Doesn't matter how good drivers are right now, since there is no market
overlap the brand choise you make will only depend on the budget you have(
previous gen cards make no sense right now, stay away).
As of why most people go nvidia right now, PCMR probably has the highest
percentage of hardware enthusiastists, so finding more nvidia cards here is to
be expected
Why most people prefer Nvidia over
AMD?
