What is a Nutrition Label…?
• A nutrition label , also called food label, is a graphic square
placed on a box of prepared foods that shows the nutritional
value of a consumable products.
• It also gives that value expressed as a percentage of the daily
nutrition values that the FOOD AND DRUG
ADMINISTRATION (FDA)recommends for a healthy diet.
• A nutrition labels is required on prepared foods such as
breads,cereals,canned and frozen foods,snacks,desserts and
drinks.
• It is optional on fresh raw meats and produce.
• If a nutrition labels are included on these products, it is a
voluntary addition by the manufacturer.

The Ministry Of Health and Family
Welfare had on September
19,2008,notified the prevention of
Food Adulteration Rules
,208,mandating packaged food
manufacturers to declare their
product labels nutritional
information and a mark from the
F.P.O or Agmark (companies that are
responsible for checking food
products) to enable consumers to
make informed choices while
purchasing .

 Product name and category of food
 Ingredients list in descending order of weight
 Logo of vegetarian/non-vegetarian food
 Nutrition facts panel
 Shelf-life(use by or best before date)
 Storage conditions
 Name and address of the manufacturer seller or
packer
 Country of origin

Mandatory Informations
When providing nutrition information, follows
are required to declare;
Energy Value,Amounts of
fat,saturates,sugars,protein etc
The content of the mandatory declaration can
be supplemented with an indication of the
amounts of one or more of the following :-
Monosaturates
Poly unsaturates
Polyols
Starch
Fibre
Cretain vitamins or Minerals present in
significant amounts
Presentation of Nutrition Information
• In tabular format with the numbers aligned
• Energy value must be expressed in kilo joules (KJ) and Kilo
Calories(Kcal) and the amount of the nutrients must by
expressed in in grams (g)
• All elements must be included next to each other.
• Vitamins and Minerals must be expressed per 100g/ml and
as a percentaqge of the Reference Intake(RI).
