This document provides instructions for implementing a nutrition experience making garden veggie tortilla wraps with preschool children. The experience will be held indoors and include developmentally appropriate ingredients like avocado, olives, and cheeses from different cultures to expose children to new foods. Children will be able to choose their own fillings to encourage decision making. Making the wraps provides learning opportunities about nutrition and cultural foods while not requiring the use of appliances.

Introduction- We will set our Experience indoor in the classroom. Our experience will be
developmentally appropriate and aesthetically pleasing. It will promote independence in young
children. Our recipe is planned keeping in mind the age group of preschool Children. It will help
children learn to make healthy choices. Our recipe is planned in such a manner that it includes
Grains, Fruits and Vegetables, and Milk products. Before implementing, Children allergies will
be taken into considerations. Our recipe will be not include nuts or processed food. Our
ingredients will include Organic fresh fruit and fresh Vegetables. We will also include prominent
cultural food products like Avocado from Mexican Culture, Olives from Italian culture and
Greek Cheese from Greece. We will arrange all our ingredients on the table. Our ingredients will
be labelled with pictures as well as words. We will also provide a step by step recipe cards. The
recipe cards will also include words and pictures. This will help children who cannot read to just
look at pictures and understand the steps.
2. Garden Veggie Tortilla Wrap
Preparation time -20 min
Ingredients
1 packet of small 6 inch Whole
Wheat Tortillas
1 cup Sprouts
1 Avocado for guacamole 1 cup Cherry tomato for garnishing
1 cup Shredded Carrot 1 cup Basil leaves for garnishing
1 cup Shredded Lettuce 10-12 lettuce leaves for garnishing
1 cup thinly sliced Olives Salt & Pepper to taste
1 cup baby Spinach 1 packet disposable gloves
1 cup sliced Tomatoes 1 packet Paper plates
1 cup shredded Halal cheese ½ TBSP, 1TSP
1 cup shredded Greek cheese
Implementation
1) Check Children for any allergies for any of the
ingredients being used in the recipe
2) Wash hands with antibacterial soap before beginning
preparation
3) Put on disposable gloves

Conclusion-This is a very healthy snack for children. It’s also developmentally appropriate as
they don’t have to use Oven, Gas or Microwave. The different colors of vegetables make it look
appealing. Children can learn names of fruit and vegetables, where they grow and also their
nutritional values. They can learn about various food groups as stated by Health Canada Food
Guide. They can also learn about prominent foods used in different cultures. The most important
part is they get to choose their options which teaches them ‘decision making’ skill.
