The document provides information from multiple sources on the ongoing conflict in Sudan. It discusses the impact on cultures like the Dinka people and the mistreatment of women. It also examines efforts by organizations like the UN, UNAMID, and countries like the US to resolve the issues through diplomacy, peacekeeping missions, and aid efforts. However, some sources note that the UN peacekeeping forces have faced setbacks in fully ending the tragedy in Darfur. Overall, the document presents a overview of the human impact of the conflict and different approaches to addressing it.
Networked Individualism and ADR/ODR Process: Reflections Through the Lens of ...Bill Warters
This document discusses how networked individualism and social media are impacting alternative dispute resolution processes like peer mediation. It notes that people now function more as networked individuals with diverse, loosely connected networks rather than relying on tight-knit groups. Peer mediation tweets reveal critiques of the fairness of the process as well as struggles over the appropriate forum to resolve disputes. The implications discussed include the need for ADR programs to incorporate social media as an important backchannel and to consider expanded coaching and monitoring roles to address issues raised in the virtual space.
This is a submission for Film260's FlipBook Assignment. The content aims to depict that fact that as technology in the communication industry continues to advance, the ease of communicating becomes increasingly complicated. Users become frustrated with the various methods of communications and the compatibility of multiple preferences are constantly tested. People ultimately need to converse with the counterpart, explain their relative hardships and find a mutual solution. As Sydney Eve Matrix puts it, "we need to look for The Ideal Goldilocks Effect"- or the happy medium (just right). The inspiration for this topic came from an article in the Wall Street Journal Online entitled, "He Tweets, She Texts- Are They E-Compatible?" by Elizabeth Bernstein.
Going Social: What You Need to Know to Launch a Social Media StrategyJim Rattray
1) To launch a successful social media strategy, you need to understand your audience, choose appropriate channels, and establish your voice and message.
2) It is also important to consider privacy, confidentiality, engaging your audience, and measuring your results.
3) The future of social media includes greater patient engagement through tools like electronic medical records and patient portals, as well as changes driven by mobile access.
This document discusses the issue of censorship and provides several examples. It argues that censorship threatens freedom of expression and prevents important ideas from being shared. While censorship has existed throughout history, the Comstock Act of 1873 set the precedent for banning literature deemed sexually inappropriate in the US. The document also discusses several court cases around banning books in schools, including a landmark 1982 Supreme Court case that found students' civil rights were violated by a school board banning books. It notes that while censorship continues to be an issue, groups are working to prevent book banning and the internet has made it harder to censor ideas.

This document discusses how user experience design can help improve elections. It summarizes efforts to test ballot usability with 200 voters across 4 boroughs. It also outlines how communities have supported election officials through plain language, usability testing, and information design. Finally, it encourages remembering to design ballots and election processes for all voters and becoming "democracy super heroes" through user experience work.

In this introductory webinar, representatives from the Center for Social Inclusion discussed the current context of race leading to a deeper analysis of structural racism. They argued that the intent to discriminate is mostly irrelevant because institutions are inherently inequitable, and even well-intentioned policies may discriminate on race (even though that was not their original intention). When we don’t pay attention to race in our policymaking and in our grant funding, we continue to see disparities. The speakers gave examples of how racial and equitable US policies are important for all Americans and then gave some tools funders could use to identify structural problems. Representatives of The Hyams Foundation then shared key points in their journey in applying a structural race analysis to a key programmatic area, as an initial step to infusing racial justice throughout the Foundation's work. The webinar concluded with a Q&A with the participants.
Antiracism Inc. Why The Way We Talk About Racial Justice MattersKayla Jones
This document introduces the concept of "Antiracism Incorporated" - how antiracist discourses and rhetoric can be appropriated and used to perpetuate racial injustices, rather than achieve racial justice. It examines how those committed to racial justice continue organizing in the face of such appropriations. The introduction provides context on how while rhetoric now embraces principles of equality, discrimination and old forms of racial violence persist. It notes how language from racial justice movements has been weaponized by various social actors against liberation struggles. The collection seeks to reveal how antiracist claims can propagate injustice and what can be done in response.

The document analyzes comments on YouTube videos about controversial comments made by Paul Henry regarding Sheila Dikshit and Sir Anand Satyanand. The analysis found that comments supporting Paul Henry generally fell into several categories: arguing that people need to "harden up" and not be so offended; that Henry was just joking or saying what others were thinking; that it was just funny; or that he has freedom of speech. There was also some argument that it was equal discrimination or that viewers didn't have to watch if offended. Comments critical of Henry tended to argue that his comments promoted racism. The medium of YouTube and anonymity online also contributed to uncivil discourse.

Social Media 2010: Harnessing the Power of Social NetworksMat Morrison
This document discusses the concepts of social media marketing and viral marketing. It explores how information spreads through social networks and the difference between true viral spread where the R0 is greater than 1 and simple amplification. It also discusses how to enrich customer data by inferring attributes through social network analysis and how social networks influence attributes like obesity, sexual orientation, and social norms. It provides recommendations on tools and resources for learning social network analysis and measuring influence on social networks.
In 2013, the World Economic Forum (WEF) called the spread of “massive digital misinformation” a major global risk. WEF’s warning mainly highlighted the effects of media-induced “digital wildfires” — misinformation that spreads quickly through digital means, usually unintentionally and through social media, or intentionally within an echo chamber of like-minded people. But, misinformation isn’t new, and the digital context has brought awareness to it while exacerbating it. The long-term implications are starting to become very clear.
In this talk, I’ll cover what contributes to misinformation, why it’s important to tackle it, examples of long-term implications of misinformation in the context of global access to digital reproductive health care information and services, and strategic design solutions that can be applied to reveal the truth.
"Designing for Humorous Experiences" is a presentation by Chelsey Delaney from the FunnyBizz Conference in NYC, Oct. 30, 2014. The presentation gives guidelines for designing digital contexts for humorous content.
"Creating a proto-persona allows us to capture
our assumptions about an end-user prior to
discovering and validating her true nature
with research; however, all projects are not
created equal, and the amount and quality of
information provided up-front about users can
vary.
In this workshop, participants will learn fun,
inspirational character-building techniques
and exercises used by humorists to create
more meaningful proto-personas.
Participants will also learn how using these
techniques and exercises help to build and
internalize understanding of the end-user(s)
throughout the LeanUX process."

This document outlines a workshop on incorporating humor into the design process. It discusses how humor can make design more collaborative, creative and fun. The workshop uses improv exercises to demonstrate how humor techniques can be applied during exploration, ideation, and evaluating designs with users. Examples are provided of designs that effectively use humor and incongruity. The goal is to learn how humor can shape the experience of a product by understanding the structure of humor and recognizing opportunities for its application.
This document summarizes Chelsey Delaney's workshop on humor-centered design. The workshop discusses how humor can benefit the design process through techniques like word association, improv, and sketch comedy. It also covers how humor can be applied to the final product through principles of framing, symmetry, and expectation effect. The workshop includes exercises where participants ideate app concepts and flows using humor techniques. Overall, the workshop teaches how humor can spur creativity, enhance collaboration, and make products more meaningful and engaging for users.
This document summarizes panels and workshops, apps, and other aspects of SXSW Interactive 2012. Some of the highlighted panels discuss topics like data visualization for social change, responsible design ethics, and the history of Google's redesign. Improvisation and its benefits for collaboration are also discussed. Concerns about single sign-on systems like lack of transparency and disjointed user experiences across sites are outlined. The document also lists websites and apps showcased at the event.
The document discusses the intersection of humor and design. It notes that humor can be a rhetorical approach to design by enabling people to observe themselves critically while acting and promoting maximum consciousness. The key to using humor in design is taking a user-centered approach: determine the desired outcome, consider if humor is appropriate for the audience and situation, focus on the audience not being funny yourself, understand the audience's relationship with humor, and define how success will be measured. User-centered humor design can help shape situations according to people's minds.

Obama vows ‘relentless’
response to oil spill
Venice, Louisiana (CNN) — President
Obama said Sunday his administration has
mounted a "relentless response" to the oil
spill unleashed by the sinking of an offshore
drill rig in the Gulf of Mexico.
Obama met with local, state and federal
officials involved in the cleanup in
southeastern Louisiana, the closest stretch
of coastline threatened by the massive spill.
Afterward, he said that despite "the most
advanced technology available," the spill
may not be stopped for many days.
