Slavery and Abolition Essay
The term slave is defined as a person held in servitude as the chattel of another, or one that is
completely passive to a dominating influence. The most well known cases of slavery occurred
during the settling of the United States of America. From 1619 until July 1st 1928 slavery was
allowed within our country. Slaveryabolitionists attempted to end slavery, which at some point;
they were successful at doing so. This paper will take the reader a lot of different directions, it
will look at slavery in a legal aspect along the lines of the constitution and the thirteenth
amendment, and it will also discuss how abolitionists tried to end slavery. This paper will also
discuss how slaves were being taken away from their families and how their... Show more content

The stories always started out with them being with their families and then they got split up
because they were sold into slavery. By the late 1850s, many abolitionists attacked slavery because
it enforced dependence upon slaves, not for the poor conditions the slaves lived in. Security was the
most important consideration of slave ownership because slaves represented a highly valuable but
risky asset. Maintaining extended families with young children and elders suppressed the likelihood
of runaways. Breaking up families, in contrast, encouraged runaways (Thornton, Yanochik, and
Ewing, 2009). Thornton, Yanochik, and Ewing mentioned that the desire to minimize security costs
and the losses resulting from runaways gave owners an incentive to encourage strong family ties
and to avoid breaking up the family units under their ownership and control. A strong family unit
not facing the threat of family members are sold would be more content and less likely to run away
(Thornton, Yanochik, and Ewing, 2009).
According to the three writers above, slaves who were sold away from their families exhibited a
pronounced propensity to run away from their new owners. Finding themselves on a new plantation
with no friends and relatives, they naturally thought about running away to reunite themselves with
their friends and family (Thornton,

Charter School Vs. Public Schools
Students Success
Why choose to go to Charter School rather than public school? Charter schools are public school of
choice, meaning families choose for their children. Federal legislation provides grants to help
charters to manage start up costs. They create better educational opportunities for the students
therefore they have higher expectations in teaching. Charter Schools and zoned (public) schools are
tuition free but unfortunately not everyone can get in to Charter school, since it works by lottery.
Everyone has the opportunity to apply and has a choice to attend Charlet School if the students are
lucky enough to get in. Charter schools are more effective for three reasons: they have higher
graduation rates, teachers are more prepared and devoted to their students, and teachers take a
greater responsibility for their students as they compete against Zoned Schools.
How important is it for a student to graduate? Isn t it a waste of time going to school for twelve
years and wasting all the government money and still not receive a diploma? That is why students
need to work harder to earn it and Charter schools are the ones that offer students to become more
educated. Joffee states, Charter schools have higher API scores and graduation rates than traditional
schools: Academically, comparing LAUSD Alliance charter high schools to LAUSD traditional
high schools located in the same neighborhoods, we found the Alliance schools have decisively
higher API scores, 762 vs.

John Waters Use Of Taboos In Cult Film
Taboo as defined the dictionary is: banned on grounds of morality or taste. Taboo topics in cult
film are often dealt with in an excessive manner. These taboos can include ideas about sex, family,
and gender roles among others. They showcase these taboos in an excess manner. The following
films have not only discussions of taboosubjects but depict taboo acts. The films Eraserhead and
Pink Flamingos feature excess and the liberal discussion of taboos. Eraserhead represents a taboo
of traditional family life. The way in which everyone treats the baby is a taboo against the
traditional family views of the time. The filmappears to want you to be appalled by the actions of
Henry towards the baby . Traditionally there would be the husband... Show more content on

John Waters intends to break almost every possible taboo in this film. Waters s creatures were a
mГ©nage of corpulent transvestites, blue haired flashers, egg sucking hags, and chicken
fucking adolescents, they write in John Waters Presents The Filthiest People Alive from
Midnight Movies of the characters in the film (137). This statement alone, about the characters,
is enough to know this film has crossed some lines. There is excess in the amount of taboos
presented in this film including bestiality, incest, cannibalism, and rape among many others.
Some social taboos broken are worse than others. While Divine holds the title of filthiest person
alive it is her family that allows her to reach that title. It is more so her son, Cracker that does or
is involved in the worse taboo actions. His act of bestiality with his chickens is much worse than
Divine smuggling raw meat between her legs or running a jogger off the road. Her most taboo
act would be the incestuous act of fellating her son, second to that being her murder of the Marble
couple. The Marble couple on the other hand are predators. Between their kidnapping of girls in
order to impregnate them and sell their babies and his flashing of his genitals to unsuspecting girls
on the street, these two at first glance seem to be worse and more vile than Divine and her

Pros And Cons Of Medical Imaging
When it comes to medical imaging, there are several different options to choose from for different
testing. There are similarities and differences; pros and cons to each. This paper will discuss MRI,
CT, and ultrasound. They each have important things to know regarding radiation dose, cost, and
reasons to use one over another. MRI provides both anatomic and physiologic information. It is the
modality of choice when cartilage, nerves, or organs are of interest. Magnetic resonance imaging
does not give off any ionizing radiation. Instead, the magnetic force reacts with the hydrogen in
our bodies to show the images. Because of this fact, it is the least harmful to the patient. A major
con regarding MRI is the cost. It is one of the pricier... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The prices can vary greatly state to state. Unfortunately, it falls on the patient if it is a scheduled
exam to shop around to get the best price available to them. Just like the MRI machines, these
scanners can run anywhere from $65,000 to 2.5 million dollars. Where CT excels over MRI, is
the fact that anyone who has metal in their body that is not removable, can have this scan with no
issue. The scan itself is faster, for the patients who may be claustrophobic, this gives them some
peace of mind. It also does not produce the loud banging noises that the MRI gives off. The only
real contraindication would be any contrast allergies. CT can still be performed without contrast,
but the areas of interest won t be highlighted as well. A typical scan takes about fifteen to thirty
minutes, depending on what anatomy is being looked at.
The CT program here at Harper is an additional 16 credit hours beyond the basic radiologic

History Of Management Consulting Can Successfully Predict...
Rapidly accelerating at a rate 10 to 15 per cent per year, a figure significantly steeper than most
industries or the GDP growth rate, the last decade of the twentieth century witnessed spectacular
growth within the management consulting industry (Armbruster and Kipping 2003). While in
1980 fewer than five consultancy firms with more than a thousand consultants existed, in 1997
there were more than 30. This denotes that 80 per cent of all consulting experience was generated
in the years between 1980 and 1997 (Sahlin Andersson and Engwall 2002). The aim of the
following essay is to evaluate whether the history of management consultingcan successfully predict
its future. The analysis will be supported with relevant case studies, which will... Show more

Despite these explanations holding true, this generalization cannot accurately predict the relative
growth of management consulting over other administrative roles. These statements suggest that
the growth in management consulting must be sensitive to exogenous changes, however this
remarkable run cannot solely be explained through economic convolutions (McKenna 2006).
Supporting sociologist Andrew Abbotts statement of professions develop when jurisdictions
become vacant , the most probable stimulus behind the fuelled growth of management consultants,
draws back to the 1930s, where the Glass Steagall Banking Act 1933 and the Securities Act 1933,
was passed to correct the evident structural problems and industry errors, which contemporaries
considered caused the stock market crash in October 1929 and the bank failures of the early 1930s
(McKenna 1995). These legislations prohibited the competing professional groups, such as lawyers,
engineers and accountants, from continuing to act as consultants (Edersheim 2004), which had an
unintended effect of fostering the immediate need for management consultants as a distinct
profession (Stacey 2010). Responding to this remarkable opportunity, young consultants such as
James McKinsey, George Armstrong, and Edwin Booz successfully institutionalized the field of
management consulting within only a few years. In

Sanlu Milk Crises #1
Background
On 12 September 2008, Sanlu Group, the biggest producer of milk powder in China, rocked the
country when it admitted that its infant formula had been contaminated with the toxic chemical
melamine. China s national inspection agency extended its investigation to other dairy
manufacturers across the nation. Shockingly, products of 21 other dairies, including some famous
Chinese brands, also tested positive for melamine. Due to consumption of melamine laced milk
products, more than 56,000 infants and young children had become sick and four babies had died
from kidney failure by the end of September. The melamine scare also resulted in many countries
recalling and banning goods using milk products ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

from Sanlu
There were some shockingly basic steps ignored along the way. As of 3rd Aug 2008, for instance,
when the formula recall was in full swing, there was nothing on Sanlu s website to suggest anything
odd was going on. No announcement. No recall information. No advisory to customers. Not hotline.
No news since 14th Aug.
As well as the government officials in Shijiazhuang city had failed to report the contamination to
provincial and state authorities (until 9 September) in violation of rules on reporting major
incidents involving food safety. According to the People s Daily, Sanlu wrote a letter to
Shijiazhuang city government on 2 August 2008, asking for help to increase control and
coordination of the media, to create a good environment for the recall of the company s problem
products....to avoid whipping up the issue and creating a negative influence in society.

How Are Athenian Slaves Treated
First off, let take a look at the slavery in Athens. It would be indecent for me to say that these
slaves had an easy life because slavery is simply cruel and inhumane. However, Athenian slaves
were the least ill treated. There were two types of Athenian slaves; privately owned and state
owned. For privately owned slaves, depending on the master, the slave either had domestic
responsibilities or was a tutor and caretaker of the master s children. Slaves purchased by the
master of the household were received into the household community with a ceremony, attended
family ceremonies, adopted the family s religion and were buried in the family graveyard
(Bowman, 2007, p34). We can say that Athenian slaves were very well integrated into their master
s family, it even seems like they were treated pretty similarly to their owner s children.... Show more

State owned slaves had the ability to work in certain higher positioned jobs such as secretaries,
bankers, and law enforcement (Bowman, 2007, p34). They were also paid with small allowances
or with clothing. State slaves had the right to marry and own property while private slaves could
not properly marry, but if the master permitted, they were allowed to live with their partners.
However, any children they made belonged to the

Differences Between The North And The South In The 1800s
During the early 19th century, especially before the American Revolution and after the War of
1812, American society has changed greatly. The North and the South followed different paths,
gradually developing into two distinct and very different regions. And in the 1800s, the
disparities between the two regions because of the difference in economic, social and political
structure, continued to widen leading up to the Civil War that raged across the nation from
1861 to 1865 which concluded the decades of diverse ideas and culture between the two regions.
The South s economic were known vastly for its agriculture and farming. Its fertile soil and
warm climate were ideal for large scale farms and crops like tobacco and cotton. In addition, slavery

A Brief Note On Gore And Associates, An American...
W.L. Gore Associates is an American manufacturing company that specializes in making
products derived from polytetrafluoroethylene, or simply PTFE. The company is best known for
its Gore Tex fabric coating, which makes fabric waterproof and windproof, but yet breathable.
The company evolved from the late Wilbert L. Gore s experiences personally, organizationally,
and technically. Mr. Gore moved to E. I. du Pont de Nemours in 1945 where he was part of a
team that worked on the development of applications for PTFE. Wilber Gore, or Bill to his
coworkers, became knowledgeable in the development of computers and transistors. He
believed that PTFE had the ideal insulating characteristics that would make PTFE useful in such
equipment. A breakthrough happened in the basement in his house when Mr. Gore and his son
Bob successfully created PTFE coated ribbon by using PTFE sealant tape made by 3M. Because
Du Pont wanted to remain a supplier of raw materials and not a fabricator, Bill was unsuccessful
in convincing Du Pont to make his PTFE coated ribbon cable. On January 1, 1958, Bill and his
wife Vieve founded W.L. Gore Associates in the basement of their house. The company took off
when the Gores secured an order for $100,000. W.L. Gore continued to grow and manufacture
products made from PTFE. Bill Goredied in 1986 while backpacking in the Wind River Mountains
of Wyoming. Before he died, he had become chairman and his son, Bob, president. Vieve was

When a patient is laying in a hospital bed in pain and the medication no longer helps, the doctors
and nurses can no longer help except to try and make the patient as comfortable as possible; why
not let them choose to end their life. When the patient is forced to endure agonizing pain even
though they want to die, some decided to end their lives on their own ending in a more traumatic
and messy outcome then a humane injection or pill that will take away their pain and let them slip
away easily. In my opinion there is no reason to suffer endlessly waiting on their imminent death,
why not let a physician who knows what he/she is doing help the patient to end their lives on their
own terms. The government cannot stop suicide from happening, there are people all over the
U.S. that end their lives for a reason. Telling a patient who knows he/she will die sooner than
later due to their illness that they cannot end their lives gives that patient in some cases a feeling
of loss of power. When an adult is told by younger doctors and nurses that they are not to end
their lives, it pushes some over the edge and they end up wanting to end their lives in their own
way. When taking their lives into their own hands it can become messy and traumatic. Giving the
terminally ill adults the power back to choose when they want to go and how they want to go
makes their ending of life much more peaceful. The patient that is able to choose death

Essay on Utopia
The Constitution of the United States as a Utopian Proposal
Few people would take issue with the statement that America faces monumental challenges both to
its own well being as well as to its self imposed duty to become a more perfect union . Over the
years, many speakers, authors, and dreamers have used the dirty facts of this nation s (and its
predecessors ) seemingly unrepentant capitalism, paternalism, belligerence, and tendency toward
cultural assimilation to declare the entire enterprise bankrupt and to focus, not on where, exactly,
the USA went wrong, but instead on what the truly ideal civilization would look like. They have

(Brunner pp. 823 833) There exists no easy solution to any one of these or countless other problems
with which this nation must cope.
Additionally, all of the above comes coupled with the moral criticisms that have been leveled at the
American way of running its business, or, more precisely, the way business has been allowed a
nearly free reign in running America. The hands off policies of capitalism, many argue, are solely
responsible for the fact that that a small minority of the population currently enjoys a greater share
of the national wealth than that of some three quarters of the nation combined. The reaction of
many writers and speakers to the barrage of hurdles faced by the American way of life has been to,
in effect, flush the entire experiment.
Instead of devising real world solutions to our real world problems, a large number of thinkers
and learned individuals have chosen to react to the failings of America and other nations which
share its basic ideals by creating, either as intentions or as realities, alternate versions of society
which are almost always rooted in the belief that these are, in some way, perfect places, or utopias.

Essay on Huck Finn
Huckleberry Finn
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is one of the greatest, most daring novels in the world. Mark
Twain s style helps to realistically portray early America. Mark Twain tells the story through the
voice of Huck, the very kindhearted main character. Everything that Huck says reflects the racism
and black stereotypes typical of the era. This has lead to many conflicts from readers since the
novel was first printed. However, the story has inspired some. James W. Tuttleton says in an article
he wrote that Huck Finn is regularly denounced as racist trash (The San Francisco Chronicle [1885]

If the author wished for the story to be racist, he would not write about the way Huck felt
towards Jim. He [Twain] tried to evince the beauty of Huck and Jim s friendship by sealing it in
flawed and humble English. ( Race Traitor [D Andrea 1992]). It is seen some throughout the
book that Huck sees Jim as a white man. Huck tells the reader this when he realizes that Jim
misses his own family and children, I do believe he cared just as much for his people as white
folks does for their n (150). Any words that seem to humiliate African Americans is simply a casual
use of Southern slang and not purposeful. Huck talks the way he was taught according to the
culture then to stylize a specific behavior toward black slaves. However, his feelings toward Jim
throughout the novel has taught Huck to conquer certain stereotypes, such as black stupidity and
apathy. Huckleberry still
3 believes Jim to be inappropriate and stubborn at times, as in their exchange over the Biblical
story of King Solomon and the French language. Huck doesn t tell Jim but says to the reader, If
he got a notion in his head once, there warn t no getting it out again...I see it warn t no use wasting
words you can t learn a nigger to argue (76 79).

Similarities Between Hunting And Hunting
Hunting and fishing have been around since the beginning of the world. Soon humans would come
along and carry on the practice of surviving and thriving this ancient way. Both hunting and fishing
are skills that are still used today, but are not used so much as to survive but as a sport. What are
the similarities and differences between hunting? Well for those of the readers that have not
participated in either events or do engage but have never wondered about this question, hopefully
this essay will answer all of your questions about the similarity and differences between hunting and
fishing. To be prosperous in both hunting and fishing one must be able to determine the location of
the animal you are stalking. While hunting may be easier to track the animal, fishcan only move so
much because they are stuck in a body of water. Both deerand bass prefer to stick in cover of
bushes and fallen trees. Both bass and deer ВЁbed during the day; however bass like deer will
occasionally move in daylight. Deer can arguably be easier to find because of new technologies
like scopes and rifles that can shoot at long ranges, but while bass fishing you are most of the
time on a craft which is sitting on top of the water giving you an advantage of being able to see
through the it to see the fish swimming. There is also new technology that uses sonar to map the

The Grand Impact Of Public Bullying By Cyberbullying
The grand impact of public humiliation brought on by cyberbullying, and those using this for a
financial gain. With just one click someone s personal reputation can be shattered instantaneously.
For some people the public humiliation had been unbearable, and tragically take the lives.
Lewinsky believes we need a shift to a long held value of compassion and empathy that we now
lack. I agree with this argument. For the first time cyberbullying is leading to suicidal ideations.
The invasion of others privacy has emerged a marketplace for public humiliation. The
responsibilities that come with our freedom of expression. I will now discuss my evidence.
For the first time cyberbullying has led to suicidal ideations as a meta analysis done out of the
Netherlands shows sadly more than offline bullying. Lewinsky stated Cruelty to others is nothing
new, but online, technologically enhanced shaming is amplified, uncontained, and permanently
accessible. What Lewinsky is stating with this that we have always had public humiliation
however not to the degree that we do now with social media. Things would happen and it would
be shameful, however once people forgot about it that was the end of it. Now with social media
scandals take on a whole new prospective, and unfortunately it is not always in a positive way. A
complete stranger can have access to this information, and can escalate a simple misunderstanding.

Anomie Strain Theory
In this essay I will be outlining and discussing the ways in which anomie and strain have
contributed to the understanding of crime and criminal behaviour. I will be using the anomie
and strain theories to discuss crime and the development of criminology. Within criminology
there are many theories which try to explain the changes in society caused by crime and criminal
behaviour. Deviant behaviour is described by theories as, any behaviour that goes against the
norms of society. There are many theories which try to explain how behaviour is classed and
why people take part in it. These are biological, psychological and sociological. There are
biological and psychological contributions to crime which try to explain the reasons for criminal
and deviant behaviour in our society. Biological explanations for crime and deviancy are that all
criminals and deviants have a certain look and they look different from non criminal people in
society. This explanation claims that how someone looks can explain their chances of becoming a
criminal. Inheritance of certain genes in their makeup can make them more likely to be involved
in crime and be a negative impact on society. There are also psychological explanations for crime,
these say that criminals have different minds to regular people, different personalities can be more
likely to be involved in the deviant behaviour which causes problems in society. It also says that
certain childhood experiences and the influences they have had

Texting And Its Effects On Society
Texting is causing Illiteracy in society Did you know the human race became illiterate the moment
they started communicating by causing bad spellers, poor word structure and critical thinking and
comprehension level? Illiteracy is the lack of ability to read and write. In 3200 BC the Egyptian
Hieroglyphics was the longest communication towards one another. As time went on writing
became shorter than earlier years, causing the hieroglyphics to be less effective. The human race is
constantly evolving around new ways to communicate faster and shorter. Although texting is
causing illiteracy in society it is conveniently to society. Social Media such as texting is the next
evolutionary step to making the human race more illiterate. Some teachers and instructors believe
its better for students to abbreviate text then not. The reason behind this is they believe students
have to be smart to know how to abbreviate their words. The students develop an understanding of
word basics and word structure. Teachers and instructors claim students who don t abbreviate text
have a harder time putting words together. Other people thinks texting isn t causing illiteracy in
society because they feel if you abbreviate your words you should still be able to remember how
to spell out the words. Some just feels that texting with abbreviated words is better than spelling
out the whole word because it takes less time. Society just feel texting isn t what s causing illiteracy.

How Does Agatha Christie Create Suspense
Agatha Christie wrote the murder mystery And Then There Were None. In this novel, a deranged
person plans and executes the deaths of ten people. These victims were invited as guests for a
weekend vacation to Indian Island in Britain. There, one by one, they are killed by the mysterious
U. N. Owen, who is posing as a guest and killing the others using methods derived from the nursery
rhyme Ten Little Indians. It is discovered that each guest had committed an indirect act of murder
that they could not be legally prosecuted for, and that the sadistic yet justice obsessed murderer was
trying to avenge the deaths of the guests victims. Christie builds suspense in the novel And Then
There Were None through punctuation, dialogue, and text features.... Show more content on

An example of this occurs just before it is discovered that Mrs. Rogers, the second victim, is
dead. At this time, Mr. Rogers, her husband, comes to Dr. Armstrong s room, frightened. Mr.
Rogers exclaims, Doctor doctor! . . . It s the wife, doctor. I can t get her to wake. My God! I can
t get her to wake. And and she don t look right to me (Christie 83). This dialogue builds suspense
because one person has already died in the story, so the reader is meant to feel worried that
another has died. Such worry easily translates to suspense in a mystery novel. In this case, it is
because of the previously occurring death and the fear of another that is rooted in the reader s
mind, which helps to bring about uncertainty and anxiety. Naturally, this creates a mood change in
the reader. Prior to Rogers s frightened exclamation, a murderous dream of the doctor s is being
recounted. There, the mood is scared and confused, as the doctor seems to not be mentally sound
during the dream. The sudden appearance of Rogers shifts the mood to a more tense and anxious
fear, one that is characteristic of a possible abrupt death. Hence, dialogue is an important tool used
to build suspense in the

Question: Which minor character had the most significant role in the play Antigone? Jean Anouilh
s play Antigone is a tragedy inspired by Greek mythology and the play of the same
name(Antigone, by Sophocles) from the fifth century B.C. The play Antigone tells the story of a
brave girl (one of Oedipus s daughters) who stands up against the law in order to honor her brother.
The play had many important characters without which the meaning would be incomplete.
However ,there were many minor characters that completed the play and aided the reader s

Theme Of Companionship In Frankenstein
It is an innate characteristic of the human psyche to search for belonging, whether with another
individual or perhaps a community of people. Once this sense of companionship has been
achieved, one tends to conform one s self in order to adhere to the goals and standards that said
person or persons follow. This will eventually create a lasting impact on the individual for better or
for worse. In Mary Shelley s Gothic novel Frankenstein, the creature comes into the world with a
pure heart and mind, almost exactly like that of a newborn infant. As he experiences his

The History of Rolls-Royce
Rolls Royce Limited is a renowned British car manufacturing company and later, aero engine
manufacturing company founded by Charles Stewart Rolls and Sir Frederick Henry Royce on
15 March 1906 as the result of a partnership formed in 1904. In 1906 they launched the six
cylinder Silver Ghost that, within a year, was hailed as the best car in the world. Once again like
the other companies I have covered Rolls Royce also created an outstanding product, which
launched them on to the engineering scene, this was again a vital stage of the companies
success. It would have brought them income that could then be reinvested in future
developments, which allowed the company to grow and develop. At the start of the First World
War the demand from the nation for military planes was increasing, this encouraged Royce to
design his first aero engine, it was called the Eagle and it provided for almost half of the total
engines in the skies at this point in time. The eagle also was the power behind the first direct
transatlantic flight as well as the first flight from England to Australia. The late 1920s saw Rolls
Royce develop the R engine to power Britain s entry in the International Schneider Trophy
seaplane contest. It established a new world air speed record of over 400mph in 1931. More
importantly, these records gave Royce the funds and technological base to develop the Merlin,
which he had begun to work on before his death in 1933. The Merlin powered two of the most

Capitalism And Urbanization In America
Urbanization already took hold on the east coast and slowly transitioned to the west coast.
Capitalism and industrialization found a new home with the mass immigration waves.
Manufacturing and mass production of clothing led to the popularization of these jeans. The
influence of clothes often plays a central role in the manifestation and preservation of social
standards. An emerging consumer culture emerged from the mines and from the need for
clothes that would sustain extreme elements and long laborious work schedules. Identity
becomes an important issue with the advent of mass consumption. Consumption in many ways
changed social norms during this time. Elements like dynamics of personal identity and mass
consumption reveal how cultural values are in constant cycles of being made and remade through
every day transactions.
Mass manufacturing of textiles and clothing arguably directly or indirectly affected the
economic growth of California and even the west coast. Additionally, mining booms in the west
demonstrated the growing co dependency of economies across the globe. Social and Economic
growth of the gold rush affected the United States. Additionally, while social upheaval reshaped
the population of the eastern U.S., the Pacific coast, instantaneously grew from an outpost to an
economic region rivaling affluence of the eastern establishment.

Compare And Contrast Inca And Aztec Empires
In Mesoamerica and the Andes, two distinct Empires, the Aztecs and Incas, emerged from previous
cultures. Their developments in politics, religion, and in society had some similarities, but differed
as well based on their different geographical locations. To politically gain control of areas in the
Central and South America, the Aztecand Inca Empires had a period of fighting between local
chiefdoms and small states. The developments of sacrificial religions helped develop tribute and
labor empires. Socially, kinship based institutions emerged into a social hierarchy, creating an

Gaining partial control of Lake Texcoco and settling at Tenochtitlan, The
Aztecs began to develop regional politics. Aztec politics were based on military strength with a
slightly decentralized government because of constant expansion, causing less unity within the
Empire. Similarly, the Incas gained their political strength from imperial conquests. The kingdom
of Chimor was locate in the Andean region of South America. A series of military campaigns by
Inca leader, Pachacuti, led to the downfall of the Chimor, allowing the Incas to settle at Lake
Titicaca. Over the next few years, the Inca army was constantly expanding the empire in the region.
Unlike the Aztecs, however, Incan government was more complex and centralized, ultimately
creating a more stable empire. The Incas adopted split inheritance from the Chimor kingdom,
which all political power went to the ruler s successor, except for his
possessions, which went to the male decedent. The military nature of the Aztecs and Incas
developed similar political systems that was motivated to conquer more lands.

Catcher In The Rye Holden s Flaws Essay
The Catcher in the Rye is a novel of teenage angst. The main character and narrator of the novel
Holden Caulfield describes his last few days before his parents receive a letter informing them
that Holden has been kicked out of Pencey Prep for flunking every class but English. Holden
discusses the real world around him as he sees it and talks about how phony the people around
him are due to his own insecurities and phoniness. Holden s biggest flaw is that he is afraid to
change and grow up. The main character talks about the lives of the guys he goes to school with
and the typical teenage behavior that they all partake in. For example, Holden has been expelled
from multiple schools, been in fights, smokes, swears, and talks about the stereotypical
conversations between teenage males. Holden s roommate, who he calls Stradlater, is the
quintessential example of a player in the novel. Holden says that Stradlater has been with many
girls and never truly cared about it until Stradlater mentions the name Jane Gallagher. Jane
Gallagher was a close friend of Holden who he used to play checkers with and would spend plenty
of time with. Holden talks about her alcoholic father figure and recalls a moment on the porch
where he almost kissed her because she had begun to cry. Throughout Holden s adventure in New
York, he mentions calling up Jane... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

She meets a new quot;bosom quot; friend Diana, not to mention all the other friends she meets

breath of many apple orchards and the meadows sloped away in the distance to horizon mists of

author describes the setting seems to be an important period in history. Also, the way she
describes her school, what the teachers teach, the dresses the girls wear, the things they use at
school, and there were many other hints. The problems and conflicts in the book were also a hint
that helped me decide it was a historical fiction book. All the problems seemed realistic to that

teaching many classes. I really liked the book. It was very enjoyable to read. I would recommend it

The Pros And Cons Of Praising God
The word praise, from Old French and Latin, means to praise someone, to glorify and extol
through song or compliments and dedication. Praising the Lord is an ocean of feelings at once.
Praising the Lord is expecting a song and acquiring a torrential downpour of adoration and
acceptance; everything pales in comparison. Praising the Lord is expecting disdain and attaining
complete acceptance of every element of you. It is finally realizing how flawless He made you.
Falling from the path He created for you does not suggest that you cannot be forgiven of your
sins and be accepted totally. A thousand times I ve failed/ Still Your Mercy remains/ Should I

Praising the Lord is expecting a dry oatmeal raisin cookie and receiving the entire package of mint
Oreos your motherused to refuse to pay four dollars for. It is sweet and your favorite and truly does
not cost half as much as she accuses it of. It does not require too much time or cause you to be
tired when the day comes to a close. In fact, worshipping is what revitalizes you for the week and
helps you experience life with composure and a focused mind. Praising the Lord is dedicating your
life to a Godwho is real and who created the heavens and the universe. Understanding that is one

An Epic Hero in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a Poem...
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a poem by the Pearl Poet, sends an epic hero on a journey to
discover his flaw. In his journey of figuring out his flaw, Sir Gawain encounters a Green Knight
that holds a holly and axe in his hands. On a Christmas dinner, the Green knight rides into King
Arthur s hall proposing a game. Any knight willing to cut off the his head is able to keep the
axe, but only if he agrees to let the Green Knight return the blow at a later time. The Green knight
was described as one who was plantlike and had a giant body structure, leading to the assumption
that he was a certain type of vegetation god. The knight also held a holly in one hand and an axe
in another, possibly representing the necessity of plants to die in the cooler climates in order for
them to grow again when it summer returns. The Green Knight, playing an important role for
plant life and crops, is still a mysterious character. His odd characteristics with his supernatural
powers make it evident that the Green Knight has some connection with crops and vegetation.
The Green Knight s physical features are clearly described in the story. He was described to

Covert Drone Program And Targeting Killings
Years preceding the terrorist attack on the 11th of September 2001, the CIA and the United
States Air Force had already developed the facility to use aerial vehicles, piloted remotely, as
weapons. Yet, it was the occurrence of 9/11 that sparked the use of armed remote piloted aerial
vehicles (better known as drones) in the global War of Terror led by the United States. The purpose
of this position paper is to examine the legality of the covert armed drone program, specifically
in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) in Pakistan. It will consider the extent of
accuracy of the legal frameworks relative to the drone program and targeted killings. To do so,
exploring the context in which the United States justifies its actions and military strategies
regarding the Global War on Terror is important. This paper will be providing a review of,
amongst other references, two pieces of academic literature that discuss the presence of drone

the legal frameworks relative to the armed drone conflict.

this paper is to answer three main questions. What are the origins of AfricanAmerican religious
music? How did this musical expression develop into a secular form of music? What is the future of
African American religious music? These questions will be answered through factual research of
African American traditions, artists, and various other sources.... Show more content on

A spiritual journey dominates these songs, but the concern for physical freedom is there as well.
The most pervasive image in the spirituals is that of the chosen people for the slaves believed that
they had been chosen by God just as the Israelites had. They also believed that they understood
better than anyone what freedom truly meant in both a spiritual and physical sense. The Old
Testament characters that the slaves referred to in their songs experienced deliverance by God.
The slaves believed that the same God that had granted them spiritual freedom would someday
loose the chains of slavery. The wonderful flexibility of the spirituals allowed for that double
meaning of freedom. For example, Frederick Douglass claimed that the line I am bound for
Canaan in one of the songs he frequently sang meant that he was going North, not just that he
would experience the freedom of the promised land in a spiritual sense. The flexibility and
multiplicity of meanings also allowed for slaves to use these sacred songs as secret
communication. Some songs, such as Steal Away to Jesus, were used to call a secret meeting
where the people could worship without the supervision of the whites. Other songs, such as Wade
in the Water served as coded directions for runaway slaves. With the eventual emancipation of the
slaves, religious music of African Americans became prominently

Abstract
The study tried to show the role of listening comprehension in cognitivist, meta cognitivist and
behavioristic based language learning methods. Reviewing the literature it was found that listening
has different roles in the methods. It was found that behaviorism limits listening to grammar and
pronunciation drills and does not pay much attention to listening as an active skill. It was ... Show

Listeners must discriminate between sounds, understand vocabulary and grammatical structures,
interpret stress and intention, retain and interpret this within the immediate as well as the larger
socio cultural context of the utterance (Wipf, 1984). Listeners use both bottom up processers and
top down processes to comprehend (Guo and Wills ,1999). Listening comprehension has different
roles in different language learning theories. Behaviorism emphasizes changes in behaviors due to
the influence and control of the external environment, rather than the internal thought process of the
subject (Merriam and Caffarella, 1999). Anderson
(2002) mentioned that metacognition can be defined simply as thinking about thinking. He also
mentioned that Cognitivism focuses more on more complex cognitive processes such as thinking,
problem solving, language, concept formation and information processing. Listening plays a crucial
role in students language development. Krashen (1985) argues that people acquire language by
understanding the linguistic information they hear. Thus language acquisition is achieved mainly
through receiving understandable input and listening ability is the critical component in achieving
understandable language input. Given the importance of listening in language learning and
teaching, this research tries to investigate the role of listening

Figurative Language In The Jilting Of Granny Weatherall
Everyone has heard of seeing your life flash before your eyes in the moments before you die,
however for old Granny Weatherall, her life trickles by like an unsteady stream that meanders
back and forth from the past to the present. In The Jilting of Granny Weatherall , the author uses
imagery, the character s inner dialogue, and figurative language to show stream of consciousness
and how the character feels emotions such as bitterness, wistfulness, and a little bit of desperation.
The imagery presented helps show that Granny believes herself to be an independent, hard
working woman. She proudly describes everything she has done to make herself succeed in life,
from the hard labor of maintaining land, to nursing and losing very few of patients, to raising her
children, all of which she did without the help of a man. She also seems bitter over the
impermanence of her actions, saying that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While mostly inner dialogue of Granny s thoughts, she mentions that her child Lydia is strongly
independent, yet still values her opinion on raising children as well as her business sense,
something Granny is proud to provide. Some of Granny s inner dialogue is directed at a man
named John, who died when he was young. She accomplished a lot without him, and seems
slightly bitter that she cannot show him how well she did by herself. At some points in her
inner dialogue, she becomes confused as to what she is currently doing or who she is talking to,
which also shows in the rambling, stream of consciousness way of narration. In the last
paragraph, she speaks to her children in her mind, telling them to make sure none of the fruit they
grow is wasted. She tells them it is bitter to lose things, and to not let things go to waste from
disuse. This is a comparison to how she feels about her life, all she has lost, and the feelings of
regret she has regarding good things she let

Examples Of Jocasta In Oedipus
Jocasta is not a true archetype for Linda. An archetype is the original character or piece that others
may base different characters and pieces around. Jocasta and Oedipus ruled jointly and had respect
for eachother, but Linda and Willy did not. Oedipus said, She gets from me whatever she wants.
Through this quote it is proven Oedipuswants to make Jocastahappy and has a lot of respect for her.
Oedipus also goes on to explain how he rules jointly with his wife. Willy and Linda have a
completely different relationship. Biff even said, I don t like you yelling at her all the time, and
I m tellin you, that s all. This quote clearly shows Willy s lack of respect for Linda with all of his
yelling. He always tells his wife to shut up and clearly thinks of himself as the complete head of...

An archetype is the original character or piece that others may base different characters and

saving Thebes in the process. Willy was having trouble keeping up with his job, and it was
revealed he wasn t selling a lot of merchandise. A lot of his former clients had no clue who he was
and never welcomed him, when he traveled. Another reason Oedipus the King isn t an archetype is
because Oedipus s story was driven by fate and prophecy; Willy s story was driven by his own
decisions. Oedipus always acted in fear of the prophecy he was told and wasn t aware he was
making a lot of mistakes. Willy just seemed to create his own reality instead of facing his own
life problems. Willy also knew the decisions he made and the consequences they would bring.

Photo Based And Installation Art
Isabel, tell us about your beginning in photography. I earned a BFA from the Pontificia Universidad
CatГіlica in my hometown of Santiago de Chile; it was quite the comprehensive program. I went
in thinking I would do sculpture and came out working in photo based and installation art.
Though I was instructed in many disciplines from painting to computer based and everything in
between, the nature of my practice determined that photo based was the most appropriate medium
to develop the concepts and ideas I was interested in exploring back then. A year later, I attended
grad school in Canada and obtained an MFA from the University of Guelph. Currently, my
practice encompasses the creation of photo based images, video works, and three dimensional
objects concepts manifests simultaneously through a variety of mediums. How were The Weekend
and Quantum Blink created? The method employed in the creation of Quantum Blink is a
variation from that of The Weekend. The slicing is analog and is the result of direct in camera
interversions. There was a lot of experimentation with countless materials, and plenty of trial an
error before I could successfully achieve the results I was after. The negative itself has the stripes,
hence the irregularity on the edges and slight overlap which becomes more apparent once the image
is printed larger. While the temporal distance between exposures in The Weekend reached up to
seven months, in Quantum Blink the lapse ranged from a few minutes to an

Essay on Evolution of the Geeks
Evolution of the Geeks
In the past 20th century, the word geek has evolved into many different meanings. The term
branched off to create a person with low social skills, often with high intelligence, a person highly
interested in computer technology, and a person with a devotion to something that places him or
her outside of the mainstream. Geek usually has negative connotations within popular culture,
where being a geek tends to be an insult. The term can also be a badge of honor among
subcultures, such as the know it all of Star Trek.
Media dictates popular culture. The television sitcoms I ve watched growing up all displayed who
is the stereotype for a geek. Steve Urkel from Family Matters, Screech from Saved By The Bell,

students. He also provided the comic relief to the show by being the ever so annoying neighbor.
The character was also showed a love interest to Laura Winslow, a popular and smart classmate
and neighbor played by Kellie Shanygne Williams. In order to pursue her heart, Urkel invented a
machine to transform his physical geeky image to a hunky and charming man, which became his
alter ego Stephan.
The need to become accepted into what is considered cool implies that being a geek is
undesirable to the opposite sex. There is shame placed on the geek about his outer appearance.
Urkel created this alter ego to match his crush s status as the popular and beautiful student. People
would consider them a good match since their outer appearances depict cool. If a geek were to go
out with the hottest cheerleader, people would perceive that as abnormal. With the geek s
appearance changed, his confidence is higher and can allow him to walk with his head held up high.
Sex plays a major role when it comes to the gender of geeks. Males are usually favored to portray
geeks. A stereotypical image of a geek would be a pencil neck geek with pocket protectors and
suspenders. It embodies everything that is opposite of the Marlboro man: the rugged All American
man. Levels of masculinity are weighed to determine how much of a man one is. During football

Snakes are Infected with Ophidian Paramyxovirus Virus
Ophidian paramyxovirus is a virus that affects snakes, particularly in the family Viperidae; it
compromises the immune system, which can lead to mortality through secondary bacterial
infections. This negative sense, single stranded RNA virus infects the respiratory system and
can be transmitted through feces, respiratory tract secretions, fomites, or vectors such as mites;
as such, in captivity, good husbandry practices are critical to prevent transmission of this
disease. Paramyxovirus is a viral pathogen. The natural host and origin for this virus is unknown,
but it is possible that it is not a viperid (5). The first reported outbreak of paramyxovirus in snakes
was in a group of Brazilian lancehead vipers in a serpentarium in Switzerland (1). These vipers
were originally from Brazil, so it is likely that the origin of the virus is found in Brazil (5). The
virus itself is an RNAvirus consisting of a filamentous particle enveloped in a spiked membrane,
and can be between 140 and 321 nanometers in diameter. The virus replicates at an optimal
temperature of 30В°C, so the disease is a particular concern in colder seasons (3). This virus is
easily transmitted between individuals, particularly when they are housed close to each other. It is
most often transmitted through respiratory secretions (2). It can also be transmitted through
aerosols, such as sputum, and oral and cloacal secretions. The virus may persist in water and may
be spread through feces. It can also be

The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 Essay
The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 was one of the largest disasters in American history. Practically
overnight the great city of Chicago was destroyed. Before the fire there was a large drought
causing everything to be dry and flammable, then a fire broke out in the O Leary s barn and spread
throughout the city. Many attempts were made to put out the fire but there were too many errors
and problems in the beginning. After the fire many people were left homeless and had to help build
their city again (Murphy, 39)

O Learys were the scapegoats and got a lot of bad treatment after the fire (126). The fire spread
from the O Learys barn to the yards nearby. Soon it was spreading throughout the neighborhood.
William Lee, a neighbor a block away, saw the fire and ran to Bruno Goll s drugstore to turn in
the fire alarm. Bruno Goll refused to turn in the alarm because he said the fire truck had already
gone past. So instead of arguing, Lee went home to his family. At the courthouse the lookout on
duty saw smoke, but thought nothing of it, thinking it was just Saturday s fire and there was no
reason to be alarmed. Then he looked up and noticed it was a different fire and had his assistant
strike the Box 342 for the fire department. Soon fire trucks were at the scene and attempted to put

Socrates Was An Athens A Greek Philosopher
Michael Kline
Professor Copley
Philosophy
October 6,2015
Socrates was an Athens, Greece born man, who is credited as one of the main founders of Western
Philosophy. Socrates never wrote any of his thoughts and experiences down, so we just know and
analyze Socrates through the dialogues of his greatest apostle, Plato. Although, the dialogues
written by Plato are not totally focused on summarizing Socrates life, but more about his
teachings and examining of others, you never really learn how Socrates lived in an everyday life.
He appeared to be a very simple man, with not many possessions or riches to his name. Socrates
never did participate in political reform in Greece, but rather choose to converse with every day
Athenians to analyze and instruct them about virtue and examination. He based his life off the
simplicity of understanding virtues and the search for wisdom. His quest for wisdom and the
instruction of others through dialogue seem to be Socrates most important aim in life. His
questioning and examining ended up getting him in trouble, as explained through The Apology,
Socrates was brought in front of a jury with charges of not recognizing the gods recognized by the
state, of inventing new deities, and of corrupting the youth of Athens. The case ended with him
being charged as guilty, and instead of accepting exile for this rest of his life; he chose death by
drinking hemlock poison. In The Apology, Socrates claims the unexamined life is not worth living

Athenian Jury Structure
1. State the major differences between the Athenian system of juries and the jury structure and its
proceedings of present day the American judicial system. One of the major differences between
the Athenian system of juries and the modern American judicial system is in the size of the actual
jury. The Athenian jury structure is made up of a very large number of jurors. For example, during
Socrates trial there were about 500 jurors present. On the other hand, in the modern American
judicial system, the jury is only composed of twelve jurors. Another difference in the structure of
the two systems is in how the jurors reach a final verdict. In the Athenian system, only a simple
majority is needed for a final acquittal or guilty verdict. However,... Show more content on

Phases Of Interrogation At The Most Comfortable
Phases of interrogation The first phase of the interrogation is to establish the norm. This is done
to determine the general behavior of the subject, as the goal is to establish the characteristics of
the subject at the most comfortable. As a result, the interviewer can then interpret the subject s
behavior and communication as the interrogation goes on. The second phase is to build
credibility. The interviewer describes his or her job and experiences, giving examples of situations
that are commonly encountered, and judges the subject s reactions along the way. The interviewer
s goal in building credibility is to convince the subject that he or she is caught of committing a
crime without stating any accusations or revealing evidence. The third phase is to create an
opportunity for the subject to save face and transfer blame. The interviewer guides the subject into
telling the truth. The goal is to make the subject feel better about admitting the truth by finding a
socially acceptable reason for being honest. The subject will feel better about telling the truth if he
or she feels that admitting what happened is better than being caught lying, and if the reason for
the crime was for non malicious reasons. The fourth phase is to establish a sense of urgency. In
this phase, the interviewer explains to the subject that he or she has a limited amount of time to tell
the company his or her side of the story. The interviewer explains that the company may make a

However, in every situation the team must have seven people on the line of scrimmage at all
times. Yes, the team may have more than seven, but never fewer than seven. Therefore, having
five linemen positioned for blocking on the line of scrimmage, at least two other people must be
on the line, most times there s two wide receivers, but can be of any position, there just needs to

Football is a game of will, and desire to pound your opponent into the earth s crust. It s a physical
sport and their are many times where it can be dangerous. The linemen need to block and protect
their teammates, the running backs need to run fast and score, the receivers need to catch the ball

The Four African Americans Artist
Enslaved as well as free African Americans pursued opportunities to create poetry, paintings,
sculpture, and other forms of artistic self expression. Many, of course, had to create their
opportunities to create. In my paper I will compare and contrast a few artist lives and works of
art. The four African Americans artist I will talk about are Robert S. Duncanson, Edward M.
Bannister, Mary Edmonia Lewis, and Henry Ossawa Tanner three free born and one a freed slave.
The tensions between an art that referred to people s social conditions and an art that transcended
race and class politics are represented by the works of two artists active during the 1860s and
1870s: sculptor Mary Edmonia Lewis and landscape painter Robert S. Duncanson.
Mary Edmonia Lewis s father was a free African American and her mother a Chippewa Indian. She
was an exhibitor at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876 and was the first African
American and Native American woman in the United Sates to gain widespread recognition as an
artist and also the first African American and Native American in the United States to gain an
international reputation as a sculptor. Lewis studied art at Oberlin College, independently in
Boston, Massachusetts, and among American and British expatriates in Italy. She used the artistic
conventions of neoclassicism to create powerful marble statuary on the subjects of black American
emancipation, female oppression, and Native Americans. Lewis s work is

  • 2. Slavery and Abolition Essay The term slave is defined as a person held in servitude as the chattel of another, or one that is completely passive to a dominating influence. The most well known cases of slavery occurred during the settling of the United States of America. From 1619 until July 1st 1928 slavery was allowed within our country. Slaveryabolitionists attempted to end slavery, which at some point; they were successful at doing so. This paper will take the reader a lot of different directions, it will look at slavery in a legal aspect along the lines of the constitution and the thirteenth amendment, and it will also discuss how abolitionists tried to end slavery. This paper will also discuss how slaves were being taken away from their families and how their... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The stories always started out with them being with their families and then they got split up because they were sold into slavery. By the late 1850s, many abolitionists attacked slavery because it enforced dependence upon slaves, not for the poor conditions the slaves lived in. Security was the most important consideration of slave ownership because slaves represented a highly valuable but risky asset. Maintaining extended families with young children and elders suppressed the likelihood of runaways. Breaking up families, in contrast, encouraged runaways (Thornton, Yanochik, and Ewing, 2009). Thornton, Yanochik, and Ewing mentioned that the desire to minimize security costs and the losses resulting from runaways gave owners an incentive to encourage strong family ties and to avoid breaking up the family units under their ownership and control. A strong family unit not facing the threat of family members are sold would be more content and less likely to run away (Thornton, Yanochik, and Ewing, 2009). According to the three writers above, slaves who were sold away from their families exhibited a pronounced propensity to run away from their new owners. Finding themselves on a new plantation with no friends and relatives, they naturally thought about running away to reunite themselves with their friends and family (Thornton, ... • 3. Charter School Vs. Public Schools Students Success Why choose to go to Charter School rather than public school? Charter schools are public school of choice, meaning families choose for their children. Federal legislation provides grants to help charters to manage start up costs. They create better educational opportunities for the students therefore they have higher expectations in teaching. Charter Schools and zoned (public) schools are tuition free but unfortunately not everyone can get in to Charter school, since it works by lottery. Everyone has the opportunity to apply and has a choice to attend Charlet School if the students are lucky enough to get in. Charter schools are more effective for three reasons: they have higher graduation rates, teachers are more prepared and devoted to their students, and teachers take a greater responsibility for their students as they compete against Zoned Schools. How important is it for a student to graduate? Isn t it a waste of time going to school for twelve years and wasting all the government money and still not receive a diploma? That is why students need to work harder to earn it and Charter schools are the ones that offer students to become more educated. Joffee states, Charter schools have higher API scores and graduation rates than traditional schools: Academically, comparing LAUSD Alliance charter high schools to LAUSD traditional high schools located in the same neighborhoods, we found the Alliance schools have decisively higher API scores, 762 vs. ... • 4. John Waters Use Of Taboos In Cult Film Taboo as defined the dictionary is: banned on grounds of morality or taste. Taboo topics in cult film are often dealt with in an excessive manner. These taboos can include ideas about sex, family, and gender roles among others. They showcase these taboos in an excess manner. The following films have not only discussions of taboosubjects but depict taboo acts. The films Eraserhead and Pink Flamingos feature excess and the liberal discussion of taboos. Eraserhead represents a taboo of traditional family life. The way in which everyone treats the baby is a taboo against the traditional family views of the time. The filmappears to want you to be appalled by the actions of Henry towards the baby . Traditionally there would be the husband... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... John Waters intends to break almost every possible taboo in this film. Waters s creatures were a mГ©nage of corpulent transvestites, blue haired flashers, egg sucking hags, and chicken fucking adolescents, they write in John Waters Presents The Filthiest People Alive from Midnight Movies of the characters in the film (137). This statement alone, about the characters, is enough to know this film has crossed some lines. There is excess in the amount of taboos presented in this film including bestiality, incest, cannibalism, and rape among many others. Some social taboos broken are worse than others. While Divine holds the title of filthiest person alive it is her family that allows her to reach that title. It is more so her son, Cracker that does or is involved in the worse taboo actions. His act of bestiality with his chickens is much worse than Divine smuggling raw meat between her legs or running a jogger off the road. Her most taboo act would be the incestuous act of fellating her son, second to that being her murder of the Marble couple. The Marble couple on the other hand are predators. Between their kidnapping of girls in order to impregnate them and sell their babies and his flashing of his genitals to unsuspecting girls on the street, these two at first glance seem to be worse and more vile than Divine and her ... • 5. Pros And Cons Of Medical Imaging When it comes to medical imaging, there are several different options to choose from for different testing. There are similarities and differences; pros and cons to each. This paper will discuss MRI, CT, and ultrasound. They each have important things to know regarding radiation dose, cost, and reasons to use one over another. MRI provides both anatomic and physiologic information. It is the modality of choice when cartilage, nerves, or organs are of interest. Magnetic resonance imaging does not give off any ionizing radiation. Instead, the magnetic force reacts with the hydrogen in our bodies to show the images. Because of this fact, it is the least harmful to the patient. A major con regarding MRI is the cost. It is one of the pricier... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The prices can vary greatly state to state. Unfortunately, it falls on the patient if it is a scheduled exam to shop around to get the best price available to them. Just like the MRI machines, these scanners can run anywhere from $65,000 to 2.5 million dollars. Where CT excels over MRI, is the fact that anyone who has metal in their body that is not removable, can have this scan with no issue. The scan itself is faster, for the patients who may be claustrophobic, this gives them some peace of mind. It also does not produce the loud banging noises that the MRI gives off. The only real contraindication would be any contrast allergies. CT can still be performed without contrast, but the areas of interest won t be highlighted as well. A typical scan takes about fifteen to thirty minutes, depending on what anatomy is being looked at. The CT program here at Harper is an additional 16 credit hours beyond the basic radiologic technology ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. History Of Management Consulting Can Successfully Predict... Rapidly accelerating at a rate 10 to 15 per cent per year, a figure significantly steeper than most industries or the GDP growth rate, the last decade of the twentieth century witnessed spectacular growth within the management consulting industry (Armbruster and Kipping 2003). While in 1980 fewer than five consultancy firms with more than a thousand consultants existed, in 1997 there were more than 30. This denotes that 80 per cent of all consulting experience was generated in the years between 1980 and 1997 (Sahlin Andersson and Engwall 2002). The aim of the following essay is to evaluate whether the history of management consultingcan successfully predict its future. The analysis will be supported with relevant case studies, which will... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite these explanations holding true, this generalization cannot accurately predict the relative growth of management consulting over other administrative roles. These statements suggest that the growth in management consulting must be sensitive to exogenous changes, however this remarkable run cannot solely be explained through economic convolutions (McKenna 2006). Supporting sociologist Andrew Abbotts statement of professions develop when jurisdictions become vacant , the most probable stimulus behind the fuelled growth of management consultants, draws back to the 1930s, where the Glass Steagall Banking Act 1933 and the Securities Act 1933, was passed to correct the evident structural problems and industry errors, which contemporaries considered caused the stock market crash in October 1929 and the bank failures of the early 1930s (McKenna 1995). These legislations prohibited the competing professional groups, such as lawyers, engineers and accountants, from continuing to act as consultants (Edersheim 2004), which had an unintended effect of fostering the immediate need for management consultants as a distinct profession (Stacey 2010). Responding to this remarkable opportunity, young consultants such as James McKinsey, George Armstrong, and Edwin Booz successfully institutionalized the field of management consulting within only a few years. Sanlu Milk Crises OSCM6120 Sanlu Milk Crises #1 Background On 12 September 2008, Sanlu Group, the biggest producer of milk powder in China, rocked the country when it admitted that its infant formula had been contaminated with the toxic chemical melamine. China s national inspection agency extended its investigation to other dairy manufacturers across the nation. Shockingly, products of 21 other dairies, including some famous Chinese brands, also tested positive for melamine. Due to consumption of melamine laced milk products, more than 56,000 infants and young children had become sick and four babies had died from kidney failure by the end of September. As of 3rd Aug 2008, for instance, when the formula recall was in full swing, there was nothing on Sanlu s website to suggest anything odd was going on. No announcement. No recall information. No advisory to customers. Not hotline. No news since 14th Aug. As well as the government officials in Shijiazhuang city had failed to report the contamination to provincial and state authorities (until 9 September) in violation of rules on reporting major incidents involving food safety. According to the People s Daily, Sanlu wrote a letter to Shijiazhuang city government on 2 August 2008, asking for help to increase control and coordination of the media, to create a good environment for the recall of the company s problem products....to avoid whipping up the issue and creating a negative influence in society. ... Weeks before everything happened I receive a call from my boss telling me that I had a huge event in London in two weeks. • 10. How Are Athenian Slaves Treated First off, let take a look at the slavery in Athens. It would be indecent for me to say that these slaves had an easy life because slavery is simply cruel and inhumane. However, Athenian slaves were the least ill treated. There were two types of Athenian slaves; privately owned and state owned. For privately owned slaves, depending on the master, the slave either had domestic responsibilities or was a tutor and caretaker of the master s children. Slaves purchased by the master of the household were received into the household community with a ceremony, attended family ceremonies, adopted the family s religion and were buried in the family graveyard (Bowman, 2007, p34). We can say that Athenian slaves were very well integrated into their master s family, it even seems like they were treated pretty similarly to their owner s children.... Differences Between The North And The South In The 1800s During the early 19th century, especially before the American Revolution and after the War of 1812, American society has changed greatly. And in the 1800s, the disparities between the two regions because of the difference in economic, social and political structure, continued to widen leading up to the Civil War that raged across the nation from 1861 to 1865 which concluded the decades of diverse ideas and culture between the two regions. • 12. A Brief Note On Gore And Associates, An American... W.L. Gore Associates is an American manufacturing company that specializes in making products derived from polytetrafluoroethylene, or simply PTFE. The company is best known for its Gore Tex fabric coating, which makes fabric waterproof and windproof, but yet breathable. The company evolved from the late Wilbert L. Gore s experiences personally, organizationally, and technically. Mr. Gore moved to E. I. du Pont de Nemours in 1945 where he was part of a team that worked on the development of applications for PTFE. Wilber Gore, or Bill to his coworkers, became knowledgeable in the development of computers and transistors. He believed that PTFE had the ideal insulating characteristics that would make PTFE useful in such equipment. A breakthrough happened in the basement in his house when Mr. Gore and his son Bob successfully created PTFE coated ribbon by using PTFE sealant tape made by 3M. Because Du Pont wanted to remain a supplier of raw materials and not a fabricator, Bill was unsuccessful in convincing Du Pont to make his PTFE coated ribbon cable. On January 1, 1958, Bill and his wife Vieve founded W.L. Gore Associates in the basement of their house. The company took off when the Gores secured an order for $100,000. W.L. When a patient is laying in a hospital bed in pain and the medication no longer helps, the doctors and nurses can no longer help except to try and make the patient as comfortable as possible; why not let them choose to end their life. When the patient is forced to endure agonizing pain even though they want to die, some decided to end their lives on their own ending in a more traumatic and messy outcome then a humane injection or pill that will take away their pain and let them slip away easily. In my opinion there is no reason to suffer endlessly waiting on their imminent death, why not let a physician who knows what he/she is doing help the patient to end their lives on their own terms. The government cannot stop suicide from happening, there are people all over the U.S. that end their lives for a reason. Telling a patient who knows he/she will die sooner than later due to their illness that they cannot end their lives gives that patient in some cases a feeling of loss of power. When an adult is told by younger doctors and nurses that they are not to end their lives, it pushes some over the edge and they end up wanting to end their lives in their own way. When taking their lives into their own hands it can become messy and traumatic. Additionally, all of the above comes coupled with the moral criticisms that have been leveled at the American way of running its business, or, more precisely, the way business has been allowed a nearly free reign in running America. The hands off policies of capitalism, many argue, are solely responsible for the fact that that a small minority of the population currently enjoys a greater share of the national wealth than that of some three quarters of the nation combined. The reaction of many writers and speakers to the barrage of hurdles faced by the American way of life has been to, in effect, flush the entire experiment. Instead of devising real world solutions to our real world problems, a large number of thinkers and learned individuals have chosen to react to the failings of America and other nations which share its basic ideals by creating, either as intentions or as realities, alternate versions of society which are almost always rooted in the belief that these are, in some way, perfect places, or utopias. If the author wished for the story to be racist, he would not write about the way Huck felt towards Jim. He [Twain] tried to evince the beauty of Huck and Jim s friendship by sealing it in flawed and humble English. ( Race Traitor [D Andrea 1992]). It is seen some throughout the book that Huck sees Jim as a white man. Huck tells the reader this when he realizes that Jim misses his own family and children, I do believe he cared just as much for his people as white folks does for their n (150). Any words that seem to humiliate African Americans is simply a casual use of Southern slang and not purposeful. Well for those of the readers that have not participated in either events or do engage but have never wondered about this question, hopefully this essay will answer all of your questions about the similarity and differences between hunting and fishing. I will be using the anomie and strain theories to discuss crime and the development of criminology. Within criminology there are many theories which try to explain the changes in society caused by crime and criminal behaviour. Deviant behaviour is described by theories as, any behaviour that goes against the norms of society. There are many theories which try to explain how behaviour is classed and why people take part in it. These are biological, psychological and sociological. There are biological and psychological contributions to crime which try to explain the reasons for criminal and deviant behaviour in our society. Biological explanations for crime and deviancy are that all criminals and deviants have a certain look and they look different from non criminal people in society. This explanation claims that how someone looks can explain their chances of becoming a criminal. Inheritance of certain genes in their makeup can make them more likely to be involved in crime and be a negative impact on society. Mr. Rogers exclaims, Doctor doctor! . . . It s the wife, doctor. I can t get her to wake. My God! I can t get her to wake. And and she don t look right to me (Christie 83). This dialogue builds suspense because one person has already died in the story, so the reader is meant to feel worried that another has died. Such worry easily translates to suspense in a mystery novel. In this case, it is because of the previously occurring death and the fear of another that is rooted in the reader s mind, which helps to bring about uncertainty and anxiety. Naturally, this creates a mood change in the reader. Prior to Rogers s frightened exclamation, a murderous dream of the doctor s is being recounted. There, the mood is scared and confused, as the doctor seems to not be mentally sound during the dream. Once again like the other companies I have covered Rolls Royce also created an outstanding product, which launched them on to the engineering scene, this was again a vital stage of the companies success. It would have brought them income that could then be reinvested in future developments, which allowed the company to grow and develop. • 32. Catcher In The Rye Holden s Flaws Essay The Catcher in the Rye is a novel of teenage angst. The main character and narrator of the novel Holden Caulfield describes his last few days before his parents receive a letter informing them that Holden has been kicked out of Pencey Prep for flunking every class but English. Holden discusses the real world around him as he sees it and talks about how phony the people around him are due to his own insecurities and phoniness. Holden s biggest flaw is that he is afraid to change and grow up. The main character talks about the lives of the guys he goes to school with and the typical teenage behavior that they all partake in. For example, Holden has been expelled from multiple schools, been in fights, smokes, swears, and talks about the stereotypical conversations between teenage males. Holden s roommate, who he calls Stradlater, is the quintessential example of a player in the novel. Holden says that Stradlater has been with many girls and never truly cared about it until Stradlater mentions the name Jane Gallagher. Jane Gallagher was a close friend of Holden who he used to play checkers with and would spend plenty of time with. An example would be when Anne goes through a quot;haunted quot; forest with her friend Diana. This causes them to come together as really good friends and they have to keep each other company to get off the matter that the forest is haunted. They become really close through out the book. The way the author describes the setting seems to be an important period in history. Also, the way she describes her school, what the teachers teach, the dresses the girls wear, the things they use at school, and there were many other hints. The problems and conflicts in the book were also a hint that helped me decide it was a historical fiction book. All the problems seemed realistic to that time period. • 36. An Epic Hero in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a Poem... Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a poem by the Pearl Poet, sends an epic hero on a journey to discover his flaw. In his journey of figuring out his flaw, Sir Gawain encounters a Green Knight that holds a holly and axe in his hands. On a Christmas dinner, the Green knight rides into King Arthur s hall proposing a game. Any knight willing to cut off the his head is able to keep the axe, but only if he agrees to let the Green Knight return the blow at a later time. The Green knight was described as one who was plantlike and had a giant body structure, leading to the assumption that he was a certain type of vegetation god. The knight also held a holly in one hand and an axe in another, possibly representing the necessity of plants to die in the cooler climates in order for them to grow again when it summer returns. The Green Knight, playing an important role for plant life and crops, is still a mysterious character. His odd characteristics with his supernatural powers make it evident that the Green Knight has some connection with crops and vegetation. The Green Knight s physical features are clearly described in the story. He was described to have green skin and a huge build: greater than any on earth; from neck to loin so strong and thickly made, and with limbs so long and so great that he seemed even as a giant... The most pervasive image in the spirituals is that of the chosen people for the slaves believed that they had been chosen by God just as the Israelites had. They also believed that they understood better than anyone what freedom truly meant in both a spiritual and physical sense. The Old Testament characters that the slaves referred to in their songs experienced deliverance by God. The slaves believed that the same God that had granted them spiritual freedom would someday loose the chains of slavery. The wonderful flexibility of the spirituals allowed for that double meaning of freedom. For example, Frederick Douglass claimed that the line I am bound for Canaan in one of the songs he frequently sang meant that he was going North, not just that he would experience the freedom of the promised land in a spiritual sense. The flexibility and multiplicity of meanings also allowed for slaves to use these sacred songs as secret communication. Some songs, such as Steal Away to Jesus, were used to call a secret meeting where the people could worship without the supervision of the whites. Other songs, such as Wade in the Water served as coded directions for runaway slaves. With the eventual emancipation of the slaves, religious music of African Americans became prominently ... Behaviorism emphasizes changes in behaviors due to the influence and control of the external environment, rather than the internal thought process of the subject (Merriam and Caffarella, 1999). This negative sense, single stranded RNA virus infects the respiratory system and can be transmitted through feces, respiratory tract secretions, fomites, or vectors such as mites; as such, in captivity, good husbandry practices are critical to prevent transmission of this disease. Paramyxovirus is a viral pathogen. The natural host and origin for this virus is unknown, but it is possible that it is not a viperid (5). The first reported outbreak of paramyxovirus in snakes was in a group of Brazilian lancehead vipers in a serpentarium in Switzerland (1). These vipers were originally from Brazil, so it is likely that the origin of the virus is found in Brazil (5). The virus itself is an RNAvirus consisting of a filamentous particle enveloped in a spiked membrane, and can be between 140 and 321 nanometers in diameter. The virus replicates at an optimal temperature of 30В°C, so the disease is a particular concern in colder seasons (3). This virus is easily transmitted between individuals, particularly when they are housed close to each other. It is most often transmitted through respiratory secretions (2). Socrates Was An Athens A Greek Philosopher Michael Kline Professor Copley Philosophy October 6,2015 Socrates was an Athens, Greece born man, who is credited as one of the main founders of Western Philosophy. Socrates never wrote any of his thoughts and experiences down, so we just know and analyze Socrates through the dialogues of his greatest apostle, Plato. Although, the dialogues written by Plato are not totally focused on summarizing Socrates life, but more about his teachings and examining of others, you never really learn how Socrates lived in an everyday life. He appeared to be a very simple man, with not many possessions or riches to his name. Socrates never did participate in political reform in Greece, but rather choose to converse with every day Athenians to analyze and instruct them about virtue and examination. He based his life off the simplicity of understanding virtues and the search for wisdom. His quest for wisdom and the instruction of others through dialogue seem to be Socrates most important aim in life. His questioning and examining ended up getting him in trouble, as explained through The Apology, Socrates was brought in front of a jury with charges of not recognizing the gods recognized by the state, of inventing new deities, and of corrupting the youth of Athens. The case ended with him being charged as guilty, and instead of accepting exile for this rest of his life; he chose death by drinking hemlock poison. One of the major differences between the Athenian system of juries and the modern American judicial system is in the size of the actual jury. The Athenian jury structure is made up of a very large number of jurors. For example, during Socrates trial there were about 500 jurors present. On the other hand, in the modern American judicial system, the jury is only composed of twelve jurors. Another difference in the structure of the two systems is in how the jurors reach a final verdict. In the Athenian system, only a simple majority is needed for a final acquittal or guilty verdict. However,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Upon hearing the oracles answer, Socrates was confused and did not know the meaning of the Oracle s answer. At that time, before Socrates understood the meaning of the oracle, he was aware that others were wiser that him, he just didn t know that admitting it himself would prove that he was actually the wisest. In order to try to understand the meaning, Socrates needed to search for proof of someone wiser than him, until he finally figured out that admitting his own ignorance was the true meaning of being the wisest (Navia ... • 52. Phases Of Interrogation At The Most Comfortable Phases of interrogation The first phase of the interrogation is to establish the norm. This is done to determine the general behavior of the subject, as the goal is to establish the characteristics of the subject at the most comfortable. As a result, the interviewer can then interpret the subject s behavior and communication as the interrogation goes on. The second phase is to build credibility. The interviewer describes his or her job and experiences, giving examples of situations that are commonly encountered, and judges the subject s reactions along the way. The interviewer s goal in building credibility is to convince the subject that he or she is caught of committing a crime without stating any accusations or revealing evidence. The third phase is to create an opportunity for the subject to save face and transfer blame. The interviewer guides the subject into telling the truth. The goal is to make the subject feel better about admitting the truth by finding a socially acceptable reason for being honest. The subject will feel better about telling the truth if he or she feels that admitting what happened is better than being caught lying, and if the reason for the crime was for non malicious reasons. The fourth phase is to establish a sense of urgency. In this phase, the interviewer explains to the subject that he or she has a limited amount of time to tell the company his or her side of the story. • 53. Offensive Side Of Things Essay The Offensive Side of Things The game of football originated in the United states in the late 19th century. The very first official game of football was played on November 6, 1869 and was held in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The players from each team, Princeton and Rutgers, battled it out as they played the first ever intercollegiate football game. There is a man in particular we need to give credit to for finding this spectacular American sport we call football, his name is Walter Camp, other people may know him as the Father of American Football(Who Invented Football?). There are three different units in football, and within those units there is a unit called offense. Offense is the unit that tries to score the whole game, and who also has possession ... Yes, the team may have more than seven, but never fewer than seven. Therefore, having five linemen positioned for blocking on the line of scrimmage, at least two other people must be on the line, most times there s two wide receivers, but can be of any position, there just needs to be two other bodies on the line of scrimmage. The running backs, tight ends, and wide receivers are positioned where they are for a reason, so they can easily be in position to score or gain as many yards as possible. Football is a game of will, and desire to pound your opponent into the earth s crust. It s a physical sport and their are many times where it can be dangerous. The linemen need to block and protect their teammates, the running backs need to run fast and score, the receivers need to catch the ball and score, and the quarterback needs to hit his target and not let the ball fall tothe ground. • 54. The Four African Americans Artist Enslaved as well as free African Americans pursued opportunities to create poetry, paintings, sculpture, and other forms of artistic self expression. Many, of course, had to create their opportunities to create. In my paper I will compare and contrast a few artist lives and works of art. The four African Americans artist I will talk about are Robert S. Duncanson, Edward M. Bannister, Mary Edmonia Lewis, and Henry Ossawa Tanner three free born and one a freed slave. The tensions between an art that referred to people s social conditions and an art that transcended race and class politics are represented by the works of two artists active during the 1860s and 1870s: sculptor Mary Edmonia Lewis and landscape painter Robert S. Duncanson. Mary Edmonia Lewis s father was a free African American and her mother a Chippewa Indian. She was an exhibitor at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876 and was the first African American and Native American woman in the United Sates to gain widespread recognition as an artist and also the first African American and Native American in the United States to gain an international reputation as a sculptor. Lewis studied art at Oberlin College, independently in Boston, Massachusetts, and among American and British expatriates in Italy. She used the artistic conventions of neoclassicism to create powerful marble statuary on the subjects of black American emancipation, female oppression, and Native Americans. Lewis s work is ...
