Nuri Demirağ began his career as a public servant, holding positions in the Ziraat Bank and as a taxman. After World War I, he became a successful businessman, growing his personal wealth from 252 liras to 84,000 liras in just three years. Demirağ went on to establish many important businesses and infrastructure projects in early 20th century Turkey, including constructing over 1,000 km of railways, founding steel and cement factories, and establishing Turkey's first aircraft factory and flying school. Though he had even more ambitious plans for developing Turkey's industry and military, including producing tens of thousands of aircraft, tanks, and vehicles, as well as training hundreds of thousands of technicians and pilots, many
