Experience and skills
I have spent the last 11 years at Deyes High School, Maghull as the singular performing arts technician,
supporting all performing arts subjects and larger ‘whole school’ events throughout the year. I will be taking
voluntary redundancy in June 2015. My knowledge of preparing, running and evaluating live productions both
internally with students, and externally for professional companies is both extensive and varied. We hosted
around 15-20 evening events a year with performance-based presentations from external companies on at
least monthly basis.
I was responsible for the safe storage, maintenance, set up and operation of all technical equipment, keeping
records of all repairs, ongoing and first level / scheduled maintenance and as a budget holder it was my
responsibility to find best value purchases both for myself and other members of my team either for purchase,
hire or loan.
I transformed the school theatre space from a 18 channel analogue lighting system installed in the 1970’s to a
fully featured DMX compliant system incorporating 12 moving heads, 8 DMX controlled scrollers, 2 foggers
and 32 LED parcans. I also commissioned a 2Kw PA system with hanging choir mics covering the whole of the
stage and facilities for up to 12 radio mics. We hired in extra staging and effects such as pyrotechnics as and
when required.
I endevour to attend trade shows twice a year to keep myself up to date with current technological
advancements and read the trade press regularly to ensure I am aware of any pertinent changes in practice or
legislation.
Liason with heads of department and faculty, outside organisations and visiting companies was an important
and necessary part of my work and I have extensive experience in translating either detailed plans or even
vague telephone conversations into workable sound, lighting and AV solutions depending on the facilities
available.
I have a Diploma level qualification in Entertainment and Performance Technology from Edge Hill University
and as such I am expertly proficient in the following:
3. • The design, rigging and realisation of theatrical and AV lighting plus effects such as foggers, hazers,
and pyrotechnics. I am fully knowledgeable and proficient in DMX protocols.
• Theatre, stage and location sound, both recorded and live including special audio effects to order.
• Customised audio/video editing ‘to specification’ for exam work or to a given brief.
• Live, studio and ‘in classroom’ multi track recording of speech and music specifically using Apple Logic
Pro.
• Digital and analogue video/photography techniques including linear and non-linear editing, custom
DVD creation and multiple format conversion for purpose using software packages. Adobe Premiere
Pro is my edit suite of choice.
• First and second level maintenance of theatrical and AV technical equipment.
I hold a certificate of competence for temporary scaffolding structures issued by PASMA and an enhanced
CRB check enabling me to work unsupervised with young people. I have an advanced level of ICT skills and
am familiar with both Windows and Macintosh operating systems (preferring the latter) and extensive
knowledge of many professional level software packages, which enable me to perform my duties quickly and
efficiently. I work well as both part of a team and on my own initiative and I am able to prioritise tasks and work
to very tight deadlines, under pressure with scrupulous attention to detail. I am an excellent communicator on
many levels both orally and written, recognising the need for confidentiality where appropriate. I am reliable
and flexible with regards to working hours and have excellent customer care skills, irrespective of whether the
customer is a student, a visiting VIP or casual visitor. I am also fully aware of equal opportunities issues and
legislation.
I also edit and remix performance tracks for our school cheerleading squad who last year, in their first year of
competition also came second nationally. I was a pioneer of podcasting in the UK, being one of the first
professional podcast producers and music promoters in this medium. In 2005 I was invited to Cambridge
University to speak on my experiences as part of a panel of experts. I am a proficient piano and brass player
(both grade 4) and as such can also read and write music, and follow a score. I have played in wind bands,
concert bands, brass bands and school symphony orchestras and as such have an excellent working
knowledge of a variety of ensembles. This also allows me a greater level of communication with music
practitioners, visiting performers and students within these disciplines which has allowed me to take a more
active role with students assessed compositions, working with them to achieve the best results. I also have a
classroom role in Music Technology A level.
I also manage the sales and online marketing for a small independent publishing house, Beaten Track
Publishing. This includes creating short form video and audio plus promotion via their youtube, Facebook,
twitter and Pinterest channels.
In my free time I run my own PA hire company for local bands and voluntary organisations and also freelance
for three companies:
A video production company based in London, providing post-production sound editing for their short films. All
this work I undertake remotely using the internet to communicate and transfer files.
Gambolling Arena Theatre Company. Mostly theatrical performance is non theatrical spaces such as parks
and restaurants for example.
Farmaggedon. An annual Lancashire based ‘scare park’ voted the no.1 tourist attraction in Lancashire 2012,
designing, fitting and programming interior and exterior lighting effects and video for their attractions mostly
using Showmagic SLX (We are upgrading to AV Plus for 2015). For the 2015 season I have also been
promoted to the management / leadership team.
