POLLUTION REDUCING PAVEMENT
SURFACING
Over one million tons of nitrogen oxides (NOx) are generated in France every year; vehicle exhaust
accounts for nearly 50% of that volume. These emissions constitute a health hazard and are
involved in many respiratory disorders, especially in vulnerable people.
To address this problem and public health issue, Eurovia has developed a unique innovative
process, NOxer, which eliminates certain air pollutants (NOx).
When NOxer is applied to pavements, it traps and eliminates pollution at source.

its FORMS

NOxer optimises pollution reduction since exhaust
gases come into direct contact with the active
surface as soon as they are emitted.

The surface characteristics of the NOxer pavement
are identical to those of a conventional asphalt
surfacing in terms of texture and skid resistance.

In addition, the NOxer pavement is a sustainable
process: the active agent, photocatalytic TiO2,
acts as a catalyst and is not consumed in the
pollution reduction process. Its reactivity is
therefore not limited in time.

The colour of the slurry is selected by the client
from a wide range of available colours. Lightcoloured pavements can be applied in tunnels and
access ramps to save lighting and improve safety.
Shoulders, sidewalks and central reservations can
also be surfaced with NOxer.

The first NOxer pavement projects were carried
out in the summer of 2006. Eurovia offers the
NOxer pavement as one of its solutions for
controlling the environmental impact of road
infrastructure; it is a further instance of Eurovia’s
commitment to sustainable development.

The use of NOxer in road pavements is an Eurovia
innovation. The NOxer pavement addresses the
environmental concerns of contracting authorities
in urban areas and zones of heavy traffic.

PERFORMANCE

NOxer is an air pollution reduction process based on
a titanium dioxide (catalytic TiO2 ) reaction.
When TiO2 comes into contact with the ultra-violet
radiation contained in sunlight, it is activated and
catalyses a chemical reaction in which nitrogen
oxides (NOx) present in air are transformed into
stable nitrogen compounds.
These stable nitrogen compounds are washed away
by rainwater. The amounts precipitated are minute
compared to the limits defined for drinking water.

OPTIMum
application
The NOxer pavement is made up of an opengraded asphalt mix into which a slurry containing
photocatalytic titanium dioxide is percolated. The
asphalt mix – which can be, for example, a very thin
asphaltic overlay (VTAO) - has a high voids content.
It is laid conventionally by paver in a thickness of
25 to 35mm.

The slurry is made up, among other things, of mineral
filler, cement, fibres and titanium dioxide. It is spread
manually. The pavement can be reopened to traffic
a few hours after the work is completed, depending
on weather conditions which influence the time
needed for the slurry to dry. Coloured pigments can
be added to the mix to blend the pavement into the
local landscape or architecture.

SPECTACULARS
ReSULTS
The NOxer process achieves
spectacular results. An in situ
inspection method to measure the
effectiveness of the material was
specially developed for the laboratory
and the worksite. The effectiveness
of NOxer is confirmed by pollution
reduction values of over 4m/m2/hr
using this protocol.
Other studies measuring the
environmental impact in an open
environment have shown that the
number and intensity of pollution peaks
is reduced in areas treated with Noxer.
