character
• Identifies anything physical about the
Character in the novel
• this could Includes his or her height, skin, hair and eye
colour, short/tall, skinny/fat, wear
glasses?, how he/she walks/talks and everything about him or her
anything physical characteristic that surrender the character
3. 2. Name Analysis
• Analysing a character’s name
is looking more closely to its
meaning (if there is one) and
describing it
• Not all characters have a
name with significance to the
story
• A lot of times though, authors
carefully choose a character’s
name to represent something
about the character and/or his or her behaviour
5. SETTING
When we look at the setting ,we look for certain description that tells the readers
about the setting
We look for when and where the story was told
The place and the time frame and the period
Was it the past, present or is it still coming
6. Setting
When Did the story happened ? This include the year or period
Present, past or future
How do we know ?
Where is the story taking place ?
The place

Are the setting relevant to the theme
7. Characters
Protagonist – the main character whose telling the story and who undergoes
complex challenges and overcome them
Antagonist – an important character that opposes the main character and
maybe the character is a manner character or a dynamic
Appearance and personalities and characteristics of the characters, how the
character appears
Can you connect it to the theme?
8. Plot
Be able to read the story and get an understanding What the story is about.
The main events that are happening in the story .
The rising events
The climax ,where the conflict might be in high and solutions are needed to calm
down the situation
Can you see a connection to the theme?
9. Narrator
The “person” whom is telling the story.
Could be a character in the novel or someone from
the outside.
First, could be identified by ( “I", We, me)
second could be identified by (“YOU”)
or third person narrator could be seen by “him or her or they”
Omniscient narrator – all-knowing
10. SYMBOLS IN A NOVEL
A symbol is a simple thing or sign
that can be recognised by everybody.
However, not only in literature, a
symbol always bares a deeper
meaning or a big idea.
It could prove a literal meaning into a figurative meaning in the story
11. An image is supposed to appeal to the
reader‘s imagination. It is intended to
bring a new feeling or perception to
an object
12. A metaphor links seemingly unlike
things with one another in the form of an
implicit comparison.
Comparison between two things and compare it with another that maybe is not
the same
A simile links two distinctly different
things with one another in the form of an
explicit comparison through the words
like or as.
13. Personification
Here you characters the human nature to non human nature and give it to human
characteristic
E.g. the cow can give birth to a human being
This is personification because the cow could not give birth to a babe .
