Vishvananda Ishaya presented the state of the OpenStack Compute (Nova) project. Nova is now stable and operational in real deployments. For the upcoming Folsom release, plans include breaking out block storage and network into separate projects/repositories while maintaining compatibility. Other goals are improving AWS compatibility, command line interfaces, operational support, security, stability, scaling and careful migration between releases.

Dodai is a CaaS (Cluster as a Service) solution consisting of dodai-deploy and dodai-compute. Dodai-deploy is a software management tool that provides templates for deploying software like OpenStack and Hadoop in a distributed environment quickly and scalably using its web UI and CLI. Dodai-compute is a bare metal version of Nova that can operate on physical machines and provide resources to users. The latest versions support multiple operating systems, OpenStack Folsom, and an "Install as a Service" feature to deploy clusters on demand.
Building a derived data store using Kafka

Dodai is a CaaS (Cluster as a Service) solution consisting of dodai-deploy and dodai-compute. Dodai-deploy is a software management tool that provides templates for deploying software like OpenStack and Hadoop in a distributed environment quickly and scalably using its web UI and CLI. Dodai-compute is a bare metal version of Nova that can operate on physical machines and provide resources to users. The latest versions support multiple operating systems, OpenStack Folsom, and an "Install as a Service" feature to deploy clusters on demand.
Building a derived data store using Kafka
LinkedIn built a new derived data store called Venice to address limitations of their previous system Voldemort. Venice uses Kafka to enable scalable, fault-tolerant processing and replication of both batch-processed and incrementally updated derived data. It processes data through Hadoop jobs to Kafka topics, from which both batch-stored and real-time copies are maintained through Venice and Samza respectively. Kafka Mirror Maker replicates data across data centers for high availability.

Turning OpenStack Swift into a VM storage platform
Open vStorage is an open source software that transforms object storage like OpenStack Swift into block storage for virtual machines (VMs). It acts as a middleware layer between the hypervisor and object store, presenting block storage to the hypervisor while storing data in the object store as time-based containers. This allows VMs to leverage the scalability and low cost of object storage. Open vStorage provides caching to improve performance and integrates with OpenStack through the Cinder volume plugin to enable common functions like snapshots. It provides a single, scalable storage platform for both VM block storage and image/backup object storage.

OpenStack is modular and scalable, with components that can be customized or replaced as needed. Key components include compute (Nova), storage (Cinder, Swift, Glance), networking (Neutron), identity (Keystone), dashboard (Horizon), telemetry (Ceilometer), and orchestration (Heat). Red Hat provides commercial support for OpenStack through its Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform.
Turning OpenStack Swift into a VM storage platform
OpenStack Swift is the Object Storage project within OpenStack. Alas, due to technical hurdles (eventual consistency, blocks <> objects, …) it is impossible to run Virtual Machines directly on Swift. You need a layer in between Swift and the hypervisor which can overcome these hurdles. This is where Open vStorage comes in.
Open vStorage is an open-source VM storage router. It is a software layer (called the VM Storage Router) in between Virtual Machines and storage backends. It allows to abstract the backend from the Virtual Machine and creates a uniform, single namespace across multiple hosts. These VM Storage Routers (VSRs) operate like a grid leveraging local flash memory or SSDs and any storage back-end (S3 compatible object store, (distributed) filesystem, NAS) to provide an extremely high performance and reliable storage system.
One of the supported Object Stores is OpenStack Swift. Open vStorage is the only solution to turn OpenStack Swift into block storage for Virtual Machines. Through a Cinder Plugin it allows to create and manage volumes directly on top of OpenStack Swift. Combining Open vStorage with OpenStack Swift allows to create a scale-out, performing, VM-centric storage platform which neatly integrates with OpenStack.

The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
