2. Directions to Play
These instructions are adapted for digital
and online learning.
These are designed by UBC ETS for the Faculty of
Education during the online pivot resulting from
COVID-19. The original game directions are
included at the end of these directions.
3. Phase One
• You will meet in Zoom to play the game.
• Your instructor will provide access to the card deck designed in a Powerpoint slide presentation.
Eight cards are randomly provided on each slide.
• Your instructor will assign you to one page in the collaborative slide deck.
4. Phase One – Part One [Getting ready to trade]
When you get to your assigned slide
1.Add your name to the title e.g. Player 1 add your name instead.
2.Read each card carefully and critically. Evaluate each card
according to what you can most or least affirm. You will be
given several minutes to do this. Your goal is to improve
your 'hand' by trading cards with others in the class – one card
for one card. Negotiate to take one card that you like more than
the one you are trading away.
5. Phase One – Part Two [Trading cards 2 X 2]
• You will be randomly assigned to a break-out room in Zoom. When
you get there, begin by first examining your partner's cards on their
slide. Make a decision about which card(s) you may like to acquire.
Negotiate to agreement.
• Click on the card you will take/trade – COPY this card (right click and
copy). Return to your slide. Right click to paste. Then click on the card
you have traded away and drag it to the discard pile.
• This should take approximately 3-5 minutes. Exit the breakout room
and return to the main Zoom room when you are finished this part of
the game.
6. Phase One – Part Two [Trading cards 2 X 2]
This random assignment to Zoom breakout rooms will be repeated
another 4-5 times. Each time, you should negotiate to trade away one
card for another card that you would like to acquire.
Each round may take approximately 3-5 minutes. Each time you
complete a trade, exit the breakout room and return to the main Zoom
room.
7. Phase TWO – Part One [Selecting Cards 3 X 3]
You will be randomly assigned to a Zoom breakout room.
Begin by moving to one slide and then examining the cards on ONE of
your slides.
Then examine the cards on your partner's slide.
Negotiate to select cards. You can move these prefered cards to the top
of the slide and move the unwanted cards onto the discard pile.
Remember that each member of the duo must contribute 3 to 5 cards
from their set of cards. A total of 8 cards should be selected to 'keep'.
8. Phase TWO – Part One [Selecting Cards 3 X 3]
Decide which slide you will collect these cards. Add both of your names
to this slide.
Copy/paste from the second person's slide to this collaborative slide to
collect the cards in one place. Make sure all unwanted cards are on the
discard pile.
Exit the breakout room and return to the main Zoom room when you
have an agreed set of slides.
9. Phase THREE – Part One
You and your partner will be randomly grouped with another duo.
Your 'quad' will meet each other in a breakout room.
First, decide on where you will collect your 'keep' cards – select one
slide for the quad. Add each of your names to that slide.
Now read and review the cards from each duo's collection of cards.
Each duo should contribute at least 3 cards to the final set of selected
cards. Negotiate to keep or discard cards from each duo's slide. Once
you've selected the cards, copy/paste them onto the slide that has all 4
of your names on it.
10. Phase THREE – Part Two
Your quad should now have a collection of up to 8 cards, with each
duo/pair contributing at least 3 cards.
Next you will collaboratively write a paragraph reflecting the elements on
the cards that explains the NATURE OF SCIENCE. Do this on the slide
– you can collect the cards into one corner (not the discard corner) to
make space for your paragraph.
Be prepared to share this paragraph – select or volunteer to be the
spokesperson for the quad.
Return to the main Zoom room when this is completed or at the
designated time alotted for this task.
11. What is the NATURE OF SCIENCE?
Add one phrase or key idea from each 'quad'.
