* Medical costs and lost wages because of otitis media equals $5 billion a year in US
* Middle ear infections - up to 30% of pediatric office visits in American children.
* Otitis media is second in prevalence only to the common cold.

* About 2/3 of children have at least 1 acute ear infection by the time- three years old.
* ~17% all children > 2 recurrent ear infections; 3 or more episodes w/in 6 month
* Prevalence increased 44% between 1981 and 1988, with infants particularly affected.
* 38% of children with ear infections also had sinusitis.
* > 70% children receive antibiotics before 7 months old, reason was otitis media.
* 80% children cured w/in 2 weeks w/out any treatment; antibiotics cure about 95%.

CAUSES OF EAR INFECTIONS

Bacteriology of Middle Ear Infections…
* Very little change since assayed mid-1970's, with exception of emergence of
some strains of bacteria which seem to be resistant to antibiotics.
* Vaccinations may be creating additional resistant strains.

BACKGROUND: Penicillin-nonsusceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates are
confined mainly to few serogroups. Capsular transformation may serve as a mechanism for
spreading antibiotic resistance to new serotypes.
CONCLUSIONS: Penicillin-nonsusceptible pneumococcal clones of serotypes not related
to those included in the 11-valent conjugate vaccines may derive from capsular
transformation of vaccine-related serotypes. Of particular concern- detection of serotype
11A variants of the successful international Spain 9V-3 clone. This phenomenon, although
rare at present, can have implications for long-term effectiveness of the conjugate vaccines.

CONCLUSIONS: The inflammation of the middle ear increases the level of FORs
(free oxygen radicals) in erythrocytes. FOR level is normally maintained at a
steady state by antioxidant enzymes. When the antioxidant defense system is
weakened, the increased FORs may contribute to OME formation. We supposed

* The need to use antimicrobials reduced markedly when using Xylitol.
* Xylitol appears to be an attractive alternative to prevent acute otitis media.

Bartolommeo Eustachi (Eustachius), a sixteenth century Italian anatomist,
described the tube that connects the middle ear cavity with the throat. It
helps equalize pressure on either side of the ear drum. When your ear feels
blocked as often happens when rapidly ascending or descending in a
plane, you yawn to "pop" your ears. What you are doing is widening the
Eustachian (auditory) tube to allow passage of more air.

For Dry and Painful Earaches:
* Cold Socks: take pair of cotton socks, wet w/cold tap H2O, wring out, put on feet.
Put another dry pair socks on top of first pair. Do before bed time, sleep w/socks on.
HOME REMEDIES

* Hot Compress: place over ear to reduce pain-wash cloth folded in four, wet w/ hot
tap water & wrung out, place on ear as hot as you (or the patient) can take, w/woolen
cap over all. Use on ear only on dry earaches; for wet & draining earaches, use hot
compress on kidneys. Keep the ears warm and covered
* Warm Olive Oil Drops: warm bit of olive oil until a test drop on wrist feels pleasant,
add a few drops of MULLEIN FLOWER OIL. Place 2 or 3 drops in each ear, put in a cotton
ball to keep oil from running out too soon.

RECIPE
Helpful For Any Infection:
Garlic Miso Soup
1 whole head garlic, all cloves peeled

1 quart chicken or vegetable stock
2 tablespoons light Miso paste
Simmer the cloves in 2 cups of the stock for
10 minutes. Puree in a blender with the Miso.
Pour back into the pan, add the rest of the
stock, and heat. Serve hot, or if to children,
warm.

All inflammations - keep away from sweets, milk, cheese, yogurt, and ice
cream.
