Maria is a 25 year old African American female, with four children under the age of six
years old. To ensure her protection of her identity, I will refer to her as Maria. Maria states that
she is a christian and does not attend church often. Maria reports that she would like to become
more active in church again. Maria says that she is currently in an abusive relationship with her
spouse of seven years. While she is not physically disabled, she mentioned that she is facing var-
ious psychological challenges that have made her live in an inpatient psychological hospital.
Maria says that she identifies as a female who is attracted to the opposite sex. She is currently
working two jobs to sustain her life and the lives of her four children aged six, three, one, and
two months (1boy and 3 girls). Therefore, she is financially and economically challenged; but
she has been doing the best she could to make ends meet despite her circumstances.
Maria has managed to secure a 2-bedroom apartment that she shares with her four chil-
dren. Besides her two jobs, she also seeks welfare support to help her with daycare, medical and
food assistance. Maria also mentioned that her older brother sends her checks from time to time
to help her with the children. Additionally, she makes use of food stamps that have been availed
to her to cut the cost of food. Some non-governmental organization has also volunteered to take
care of educational needs of her two older children. While her emotional and psychological state
seems a bit unstable, Maria is physically healthy, and reports that she takes care of her physical
wellbeing, by walking 3 miles per day, to catch a bus to work.
Maria presenting issues is PTSD, she has been sexually assaulted numerous of times
throughout her childhood. She seems to be trying to forget some issues of her past that bring
back bad memories regarding her sexual abuse. She seems traumatized by her sexual past, which

is apparent in how she disregards any questions about her sexual abusive past. The relevant his-
tory behind her traumatic response to sexual-related questions stems from her experiences as a

ers, and aunts. From the ages of four to nine, she was sexually abused by her family members.
The trauma from those incidents has seemingly remained with her in her adult life. It is affecting
her relationship with males.

The following background information was obtained from an interview with Smith and a review of the demographic information sheet that she completed before the evaluation.
Smith is a forty-one-year-old Caucasian female who was referred for a psychological evaluation by the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation to assist with determining eligibility and to assess whether her emotional problems are interfering with her ability to work. She initially requested assistance from the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation in October 2008 to assist her with maintaining employment. At this time, she is interested in learning new skills to enable her to find full-time work in an office setting.
Smith was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, and raised in a small nearby town, Williamsport,
Pennsylvania. She is the oldest of three children born to her mother and father following an uncomplicated pregnancy and deliver. Her younger sisters relied upon her for their after-school child care once their mother returned to work and when she was twelve years old. She spoke of her mother as having been physically and emotionally abusive in the past, often yelling, hitting her, and pushing her around. While her mother took her frustration out on Smith, her father would drink alcohol in excess. Danielle, who has just turned 26 years old, presented
herself to a university-based psychology
clinic with complaints of problems with her
work and marriage, as well as just being
generally unhappy. A structured interview and
several psychological tests were administered.
What emerged was a picture of a young woman
who had suffered from a variety of phobias
as well as varying degrees of depression and
anxiety throughout most of her life. Yet, from
most perspectives, she had usually functioned
within the normal range on most dimensions.
She had a normal childhood, and both Danielle
and her parents would have characterized her as
reasonably well adjusted and happy. Her grades
were above average throughout grade school and
high school, and although Danielle struggled
academically in college, she did manage to
graduate with a business degree, with a major
in marketing. She started to work on her MBA
but felt “just burnt out” with school. So she quit
to take a lower-echelon job in the marketing
department of a large firm in a major city about
300 miles from the area where she grew up and
went to college.
Danielle was introduced to her future husband
shortly after moving to that city, and they were
married after a brief but intense courtship of four
months. This intensity waned almost immediately
after the marriage ceremony, and they settled
into a routine marked neither by contentment
nor by obvious problems. They seldom fought
openly, but they developed increasingly “parallel
lives,” wherein interactions (including sexual
ones) were pleasant but minimal.
Embedded in this overall life structure
were the difficulties that had moved Danielle
to come to the clinic. Ever since she had been
little, Danielle had been afraid of snakes and
insects, especially spiders, and from her high

school years onward, she became anxious if
closed in for any length of time in a small room
(claustrophobia). She also reported that she
occasionally experienced periods during which
she would feel anxious for no reason that she
could put her finger on (“free-floating anxiety”)
and then, more rarely, would become depressed.
Once, when she was in college, the depression
became severe enough that she considered
suicide. Fortunately, her roommate was sensitive
to the crisis. She made sure Danielle went over
to the campus counseling center, and Danielle’s
upset diminished quickly enough for her to quit
therapy after three sessions.
More recently, Danielle had experienced
the episodes of anxiety and depression more
consistently, and it was clear that her husband
didn’t have much interest in hearing about all
this. Also, she still had the phobias. She could
live with the fears of the snakes and spiders,
although they substantially reduced her ability to
enjoy outdoor activities. But the claustrophobia
had worsened, making some of the meetings
required by her job very difficult for her.

Co-Occurring Disorder (COD) is actually the concern here with 3 areas operating related to alcohol, opioids, and depression. Benzodiazepenes could be added as a 4th, but can be determined after detox. Further investigation is needed after suicidality and overdosing more than once regarding self reported, but unconfirmed, BiPolar mental illness, as well. It would not be appropriate to ignore any one of the areas above especially in one with suicidal ideations and her past history of comas. Future opioids should come through her psychiatrist only unless communication is established between you, psychiatrist and pain doctor. You will need third party waivers signed by client from start of therapy to communicate with any previous psychiatrist and pain doctors, who can be determined. These plans always offer ongoing evaluation and continual review open to additions and changes as the case moves forward to prioritize necessities and meet previously undisclosed or unknown concerns. For most new mothers, giving birth results in an instant bondand feelings of immediate and unconditional love for theirnew baby. Many describe motherhood as the happiest time
in their lives and cannot imagine a life without their children.
However, for some, another reaction occurs—one of sadness
and apathy, and withdrawal from the world around them.
Brooke Shields, the well-known actress and model, was one of
these women.
In Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum
Depression, Shields (2006) writes that she had always dreamed
of being a mother. Although she and her husband, Chris Henchy,
initially had trouble conceiving, Shields eventually became
pregnant through in vitro fertilization and gave birth to a daugh-
ter in 2003. Just as her attempt at conceiving wasn’t without
effort, easing into life as a mother wasn’t effortless, either.
Almost immediately after returning home from the hospital,
Shields began to experience symptoms of postpartum depres-
sion. Once referred to as the “baby blues,” postpartum depres-
sion has recently come to be considered a very legitimate type
of depression. Symptoms range from anxiety and tearfulness to
feelings of extreme detachment and even being suicidal.
Shields notes that her “baby blues” rapidly gave way to full-
blown depression, including thoughts of self-harm and frighten-
ing visions of harm coming to her baby. In addition to the birth of
her child, Shields was also coping with the recent death of her
father, as well as the ongoing struggle of coping with the suicide
of a close friend 2 years prior. Doctors note that postpartum
depression can be exacerbated by events such as these.

1. What is your personal interest or issue? My personal interest is serial killers and/or mass murderers. I have been attracted in this specific topic for just about 10 years. I come from a law enforcement family where my mother, father, and brother were all police officers. I picked up my first Charles Manson book and read it from cover to cover and as of that point on I was infatuated not only on Charlie Manson, but serial killers over-all. I have also read other books pertaining to serial killers by Jeff Lindsay I would rather read about persons who have a mental illness and how it can be part of the cause to their overall being, as per their psych E. My issue with this topic is not a lot of people reveal the same desire I do about serial killers. In fact, most find it alarming that the only books that I get into depth are those with mystery, suspense, serial killers or mass murderers. I highlight in my books and make logs. I have always had bit of interest with this certain subject matter, but again the issue with it is the only category I read. Individuals have a tendency to get a bit startled and think that I may become a sociopath. In addition, my other concern is I do not know how schizophrenia has portrayed a part with serial killers.
2. What are the component parts of the interest? A few of the components of interest in regards to schizophrenia and serial killers (topic) consist of what factors inspire or have an effect on one to mass kill even though they have a mental illness either diagnosed or undiagnosed. An additional component part to the topic of interest is also illegal substances. Why do a lot of serial killers who know they have a mental illness do psychedelic drugs? Could this lead to psychosis in the individual? What are the influences of mental illness, drugs, and serial killers?
3. Why did you become curious about this question? I became curious about these questions as I was looking into the topic. I became more interested after doing more research about schizophrenics. Both sides of my family unit haves mental illness, but not a single person that I know of that has schizophrenic. Through efficient research, persons that are at this time diagnosed with schizophrenia can be kept at bay with medication, but does not halt the serial killer possibly from being infuriated inside. Having not taken a test like this in quite some time, I was anxious to see how the 10 years in a management role may have affected my results.
The assessment showed I have a blend of both Dominant and Inspiring traits. My Dominant traits are probably a little stronger than my Inspiring traits. Some words that describe me are: Directive, Decisive, Driven and Interactive. I am task-oriented, and probably get a great deal done. I probably like problem solving and getting results. I am comfortable interacting with others to make things happen.
These results describe me to a T. In my former role, I managed a group of 12 people who supported the efforts of a National Accounts sales team for a large packaging company. We supported a sales portfolio of almost $2billion and dealt with multiple priorities and deadlines almost daily.
I come from a very small town mid-westerner background (high school graduating class of 98 -- that's people, not the year), so I can communicate with people from all walks of life. I was the only person in the office who knew the cleaning crew by name, yet the CEO knew mine. My dad was an iron worker and my mom a homemaker, but they owned several small businesses when I was growing up, so I guess I get my business sense from being raised in that type of environment.
I'm intrigued by what makes people "tick" and I think that helps me interact with people with other leadership styles. My style is very direct (obviously), but I have had the most success leading and managing people because I treat people how I want to be treated and I don't expect anyone to do anything I wouldn't do.
My leadership style served me well for 10 years after which time the company I worked for was bought by another company. The new company had different business philosophies, which included all employees being in Atlanta, with less experience, working for less money, so my department and I were laid off.
I am employed again, but not in a management role, and I struggle with the management and leaders as their style is quite different from mine and my prior boss. I have never encountered so many people who are miserable at their job, so I'm anxious to see what I can learn from this course.............jane

On the test, I received a 1.54, which apparently seemed to be the average for the MBA students. I feel that I am actually quite tolerant to change in my current position as a manager. I have to be open to changes on a daily basis because it is a way of life in the corporate environment. As Yukl states, "Relevant competencies identified in more recent research include emotional intelligence, social intelligence, systems thinking, and the ability to learn and adapt to change" (2006, pg. 209). It's important to be able to handle change with acceptance and grace, and try to stay positive. That is how I stay comfortable with change in as a leader and follower, look at it in a way that is positive and feel that I will only grow and learn from the situation. If there were no changes, life would be boring. :) Each day is a new adventure so try to see everything as a good thing even if it seems a bit scary.

The television news industry is a business with a profit motive before it is a public service; consequently, producers and reporters attempt to make the news more entertaining by airing stories that involve conflict, human impact, or morality. Television news did not find material that was dramatic enough until the number of American troops was raised to 175, 000 in July 1965 (Hallin, 1986, p.115). Combat, interviews with American soldiers, and helicopter scenes all provided the television news industry with the drama that it required. The networks set up permanent bureaus in Saigon and sent hundreds of correspondents there throughout the war. From 1965 through the Tet Offensive in 1968, 86 percent of the CBS and NBC nightly news programs covered the war, focusing mostly on ground and air combat (Bonior, Champlin, Kolly, 1984, p.4). This coverage was generally very supportive of U.S involvement in the war and of the soldier himself until 1967. The media labeled the conflict as a "good guys shooting Reds" story so that it could fit into the ongoing saga of the Cold War (Wyatt, 1995, p.81).

Danielle, who has just turned 26 years old, presented
herself to a university-based psychology
clinic with complaints of problems with her
work and marriage, as well as just being
generally unhappy. A structured interview and
several psychological tests were administered.
What emerged was a picture of a young woman
who had suffered from a variety of phobias
as well as varying degrees of depression and
anxiety throughout most of her life. Yet, from
most perspectives, she had usually functioned
within the normal range on most dimensions.
She had a normal childhood, and both Danielle
and her parents would have characterized her as
reasonably well adjusted and happy. Her grades
were above average throughout grade school and
high school, and although Danielle struggled
academically in college, she did manage to
graduate with a business degree, with a major
in marketing. She started to work on her MBA
but felt “just burnt out” with school. So she quit
to take a lower-echelon job in the marketing
department of a large firm in a major city about
300 miles from the area where she grew up and
went to college.
Danielle was introduced to her future husband
shortly after moving to that city, and they were
married after a brief but intense courtship of four
months. This intensity waned almost immediately
after the marriage ceremony, and they settled
into a routine marked neither by contentment
nor by obvious problems. They seldom fought
openly, but they developed increasingly “parallel
lives,” wherein interactions (including sexual
ones) were pleasant but minimal.
Embedded in this overall life structure
were the difficulties that had moved Danielle
to come to the clinic. Ever since she had been
little, Danielle had been afraid of snakes and
insects, especially spiders, and from her high

school years onward, she became anxious if
closed in for any length of time in a small room
(claustrophobia). She also reported that she
occasionally experienced periods during which
she would feel anxious for no reason that she
could put her finger on (“free-floating anxiety”)
and then, more rarely, would become depressed.
Once, when she was in college, the depression
became severe enough that she considered
suicide. Fortunately, her roommate was sensitive
to the crisis. She made sure Danielle went over
to the campus counseling center, and Danielle’s
upset diminished quickly enough for her to quit
therapy after three sessions.
More recently, Danielle had experienced
the episodes of anxiety and depression more
consistently, and it was clear that her husband
didn’t have much interest in hearing about all
this. Also, she still had the phobias. She could
live with the fears of the snakes and spiders,
although they substantially reduced her ability to
enjoy outdoor activities. But the claustrophobia
had worsened, making some of the meetings
required by her job very difficult for her.

Co-Occurring Disorder (COD) is actually the concern here with 3 areas operating related to alcohol, opioids, and depression. Benzodiazepenes could be added as a 4th, but can be determined after detox. Further investigation is needed after suicidality and overdosing more than once regarding self reported, but unconfirmed, BiPolar mental illness, as well. It would not be appropriate to ignore any one of the areas above especially in one with suicidal ideations and her past history of comas. Future opioids should come through her psychiatrist only unless communication is established between you, psychiatrist and pain doctor. You will need third party waivers signed by client from start of therapy to communicate with any previous psychiatrist and pain doctors, who can be determined. These plans always offer ongoing evaluation and continual review open to additions and changes as the case moves forward to prioritize necessities and meet previously undisclosed or unknown concerns. These can be updated in the treatment plan and are also noted in the progress notes. Your codes needed to be more specific on both of the substances and depression.

For most new mothers, giving birth results in an instant bondand feelings of immediate and unconditional love for theirnew baby. Many describe motherhood as the happiest time
in their lives and cannot imagine a life without their children.
However, for some, another reaction occurs—one of sadness
and apathy, and withdrawal from the world around them.
Brooke Shields, the well-known actress and model, was one of
these women.
In Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum
Depression, Shields (2006) writes that she had always dreamed
of being a mother. Although she and her husband, Chris Henchy,
initially had trouble conceiving, Shields eventually became
pregnant through in vitro fertilization and gave birth to a daugh-
ter in 2003. Just as her attempt at conceiving wasn’t without
effort, easing into life as a mother wasn’t effortless, either.
Almost immediately after returning home from the hospital,
Shields began to experience symptoms of postpartum depres-
sion. Once referred to as the “baby blues,” postpartum depres-
sion has recently come to be considered a very legitimate type
of depression. Symptoms range from anxiety and tearfulness to
feelings of extreme detachment and even being suicidal.
Shields notes that her “baby blues” rapidly gave way to full-
blown depression, including thoughts of self-harm and frighten-
ing visions of harm coming to her baby. In addition to the birth of
her child, Shields was also coping with the recent death of her
father, as well as the ongoing struggle of coping with the suicide
of a close friend 2 years prior. Doctors note that postpartum
depression can be exacerbated by events such as these.

anxious and panicky. She felt sadness greater than she’d ever
experienced, and began thinking that it would never go away.

1. What is your personal interest or issue? My personal interest is serial killers and/or mass murderers. I have been attracted in this specific topic for just about 10 years. I come from a law enforcement family where my mother, father, and brother were all police officers. I picked up my first Charles Manson book and read it from cover to cover and as of that point on I was infatuated not only on Charlie Manson, but serial killers over-all. I have also read other books pertaining to serial killers by Jeff Lindsay I would rather read about persons who have a mental illness and how it can be part of the cause to their overall being, as per their psych E. My issue with this topic is not a lot of people reveal the same desire I do about serial killers. In fact, most find it alarming that the only books that I get into depth are those with mystery, suspense, serial killers or mass murderers. I highlight in my books and make logs. I have always had bit of interest with this certain subject matter, but again the issue with it is the only category I read. Individuals have a tendency to get a bit startled and think that I may become a sociopath. In addition, my other concern is I do not know how schizophrenia has portrayed a part with serial killers.
2. What are the component parts of the interest? A few of the components of interest in regards to schizophrenia and serial killers (topic) consist of what factors inspire or have an effect on one to mass kill even though they have a mental illness either diagnosed or undiagnosed. An additional component part to the topic of interest is also illegal substances. Why do a lot of serial killers who know they have a mental illness do psychedelic drugs? Could this lead to psychosis in the individual? What are the influences of mental illness, drugs, and serial killers?
3. Why did you become curious about this question? I became curious about these questions as I was looking into the topic. I became more interested after doing more research about schizophrenics. Both sides of my family unit haves mental illness, but not a single person that I know of that has schizophrenic. Through efficient research, persons that are at this time diagnosed with schizophrenia can be kept at bay with medication, but does not halt the serial killer possibly from being infuriated inside. Having not taken a test like this in quite some time, I was anxious to see how the 10 years in a management role may have affected my results.
The assessment showed I have a blend of both Dominant and Inspiring traits. My Dominant traits are probably a little stronger than my Inspiring traits. Some words that describe me are: Directive, Decisive, Driven and Interactive. I am task-oriented, and probably get a great deal done. I probably like problem solving and getting results. I am comfortable interacting with others to make things happen.
These results describe me to a T. In my former role, I managed a group of 12 people who supported the efforts of a National Accounts sales team for a large packaging company. We supported a sales portfolio of almost $2billion and dealt with multiple priorities and deadlines almost daily.
I come from a very small town mid-westerner background (high school graduating class of 98 -- that's people, not the year), so I can communicate with people from all walks of life. I was the only person in the office who knew the cleaning crew by name, yet the CEO knew mine. My dad was an iron worker and my mom a homemaker, but they owned several small businesses when I was growing up, so I guess I get my business sense from being raised in that type of environment.
I'm intrigued by what makes people "tick" and I think that helps me interact with people with other leadership styles. My style is very direct (obviously), but I have had the most success leading and managing people because I treat people how I want to be treated and I don't expect anyone to do anything I wouldn't do.
My leadership style served me well for 10 years after which time the company I worked for was bought by another company. The new company had different business philosophies, which included all employees being in Atlanta, with less experience, working for less money, so my department and I were laid off.

On the test, I received a 1.54, which apparently seemed to be the average for the MBA students. I feel that I am actually quite tolerant to change in my current position as a manager. I have to be open to changes on a daily basis because it is a way of life in the corporate environment. As Yukl states, "Relevant competencies identified in more recent research include emotional intelligence, social intelligence, systems thinking, and the ability to learn and adapt to change" (2006, pg. 209). It's important to be able to handle change with acceptance and grace, and try to stay positive. That is how I stay comfortable with change in as a leader and follower, look at it in a way that is positive and feel that I will only grow and learn from the situation. If there were no changes, life would be boring. :) Each day is a new adventure so try to see everything as a good thing even if it seems a bit scary.

Television news did not find material that was dramatic enough until the number of American troops was raised to 175, 000 in July 1965 (Hallin, 1986, p.115). Combat, interviews with American soldiers, and helicopter scenes all provided the television news industry with the drama that it required. The networks set up permanent bureaus in Saigon and sent hundreds of correspondents there throughout the war. From 1965 through the Tet Offensive in 1968, 86 percent of the CBS and NBC nightly news programs covered the war, focusing mostly on ground and air combat (Bonior, Champlin, Kolly, 1984, p.4). This coverage was generally very supportive of U.S involvement in the war and of the soldier himself until 1967. The media labeled the conflict as a "good guys shooting Reds" story so that it could fit into the ongoing saga of the Cold War (Wyatt, 1995, p.81).

I am not a born leader. I fall short to the take charge attitude of dominance. I do not have a dominating presence and I tend to shy away from being the center of attention. I would rather be someone's right hand man. I am the Robin to Batman or the Louis Lane to Superman. However, I strive on being a supportive follower that works hard, has a positive attitude, and is the support system for the leader. I have never sight out a leadership position, but I enjoy doing work that carries great importance and helps out the organization.
The readings this week and last week makes me think about the different aspects of my personality and some of the qualities that are considered leadership. According to our readings, "Leadership is realized in the process of influencing the activities of an organized group toward goal achievement" (Yukl, 2006, P.3). Even though a person is not in a direct leadership position or prefers to stay out of the lime light, they can still influence people by their attitudes, work ethic, and loyalty to the company. It does not take a person to be in a leadership position to show leadership qualities.
In conclusion, I am not a born leader, but I show certain qualities that reflect leadership. I would rather be someone's sidekick and help them guide and influence the organization to success. Dominance is not a strength of mine and because of that I find it hard to take charge and be the boss.

Participative leadership involves efforts by a leader to encourage and facilitate participation by others in making important decisions" (Yukl, 2006, p. 82). I think participative leadership is important because it involves an entire team, and it shows the value of others ideas and creates leadership opportunities. I think this type of leadership is most effective when there has been a steady track record of the leader following through with the thoughts of others. When a leader truly wants what is best for the company, and they can see beyond themselves. Participative leadership can effective as well as ineffective.
An effective example of participative leadership would be an employee owned company or volunteer projects. In 1990, Enron—which was just a natural gas transportation company at the time—started a new division to trade natural gas. The company went from being a “stodgy” gas pipeline company to being a “world-class” company overnight. Enron soon became a $55 billion empire, trading gas, electricity, minerals, water, paper and broadband capacity.
A critical part of Enron’s success was the company’s employee value proposition (EVP). The EVP focused on Enron as a dealmaker and was designed to attract the top talent the company needed to continue to move it forward. The EVP provided employees with the opportunity to do something “big” and to change how business was done in other industries. Jobs were restructured to give employees a lot of elbow room and headroom. Traditional gas pipeline employees were not the employees needed for this new, never-before-tried venture. Internal job movements at Enron were an important part of the EVP. Managers were strongly encouraged to allow employees to move within the company. The goal was to not hold anyone back. When the Global Broadband unit was launched, 100 top performers from around the company were brought together in Houston. By the end of the day, 50 had been recruited for the new project. Overall, the recruiting strategy focusing on internal recruitment paid off. The business continued to grow and attract entrepreneurial employees.
The company that thought it had nowhere to go but up came crashing down in 2001, when it was charged with illegal activities. By 2004, Enron’s corporate officers faced numerous charges of wrongdoing, and the company was a shell of its former self. Managers were charged with manufacturing profits, hiding debt, and bullying Wall Street to buy into its questionable accounting and investment practices. An extensive amount of downsizing had occurred, and many employees had lost all of their retirement savings after Enron’s stock collapsed. Faced with bankruptcy and a sullied reputation, the company struggled to continue but finally made the decision to cease to exist once all litigation concludes.

Clara was polite in greeting Dr. Mason, but did not smile and kept her gaze down as she took a seat. Mr. and Mrs. Lawson sat next to Clara and began explaining their concerns. They described Clara as a quiet child who has recently begun throwing temper tantrums, during which she is inconsolable. Her sleep and eating patterns have changed, and she no longer wants to go to preschool. Create a brief response to each of the following questions: What other information would you like to learn during the interview with the family? What questions would you ask? In addition to the clinical interview, what other clinical assessment tools should you consider? Why? Although you need more information to begin treatment, what factors might you take into consideration in designing an effective intervention for this family? If you were preparing to diagnose Clara, you would refer to the DSM-IV classification system to evaluate her condition on five separate axes. What type of information would go into each axis? You are not asked to enter a diagnosis, only describe the kind of information that would be entered in each axis. Do you think that diagnosing Clara would be beneficial or harmful? Explain why.
