Fiber optics and how optical communication takes place.Details regarding how signalling, routing and switching occurs in optical network .A little detail about various equipments used in optical communication.
An optical fiber (or optical fibre) is a flexible, transparent fiber made of high quality extruded glass (silica) or plastic, slightly thicker than a human hair. It can function as a waveguide, or “light pipe”, to transmit light between the two ends of the fiber.

In data communication,
Transmission media is a pathway that carries the information from sender to receiver.
We use different types of cables or waves to transmit data.
Data is transmitted normally through electrical or electromagnetic signals.
Synchronous optical networking (SONET) is a standardized digital communication protocol that is used to transmit a large volume of data over relatively long distances using a fiber optic medium. With SONET, multiple digital data streams are transferred at the same time over optical fiber using LEDs and laser beams.

3. Definition of terms: Mb: Network transfer rates and download speeds are often referred to in megabits KB: A kilobyte is 1,024 bytes of digital information GB: A unit of computer storage equalling approximately 1 billion bytes Mbps: Megabits per second IP Address: Internet Protocol Address. A unique number identifying all devices connected to the Internet. This number is usually shown in groups of numbers from 0 to 255, separated by periods, for example 207.46.230.218 Modem: is the piece of equipment that links your computer to the Internet via telephone lines. This is an acronym derived from the words modulator and demodulator by taking the “mo” and “dem” from the words. A modem is a piece of hardware that is used to connect computers to the Internet.
4. Definition of terms: Contention Ratio: is the ratio of the potential maximum demand to the actual bandwidth. The higher the contention ratio, the greater the number of users that may be trying to use the actual bandwidth at any one time and, therefore, the lower the effective bandwidth offered, especially at peak times PSTN: The public switched telephone network is the network of the world's public circuit switched telephone networks. Originally a network of fixed-line analogue telephone systems, the PSTN is now almost entirely digital in its core ISDN: integrated services digital network – regular twisted-pair copper telephone lines that can carry two 64 kbps channels and one 16 kbps signalling channel
