Ramanui School is committed to providing an education that empowers Māori students and strengthens their cultural identity. The school aims to develop curriculum that meets the needs of its diverse community and provides opportunities to learn te reo Māori and tikanga. It also focuses on building strong partnerships with parents and the local community to improve student outcomes.

- 7. 78% of ourchildren are Maori. All children at Ramanui School have Te Reo instruction daily. We are funded at Level 3 Immersion Tikanga Maori is taught at all levels weekly. All children have the opportunity to participate in Kapa Haka Te Ao Maori is incorporated into unit studies Staff are committed to raising their capabilities and knowledge of te reo me ona tikanga and are participating in Cert. of Maori Studies through Te Wananga o Aotearoa Resource Teacher:Maori on site to advise and guide us Strong whanau and iwi relationships already established Opportunities to provide whanau programmes

Schools that are committed to being inclusive enable all parents to be actively involved in decisions affecting their child and respond to parents concerns and questions promptly. Schools are an integral part of their communities. Schools are involved in community activities and events. Effective partnerships between parents, whanau, communities and schools lead to improved educational , social, and behavioural outcomes for our children. - 19. Te Pumaomao facilitatedby Takawai and Christine Murphy held at Pariroa Pa. For a significant number this was out of their comfort zone but the feedback was positive and the outcomes around understanding the Treaty in the context of how it impacted on the social and economic development of Maori today was especially empowering.

- #2 This presentation was initially part of a Community consultation we had around curriculum review. We had already as a staff, recognised that our curriculum delivery did not reflect our dual cultural heritage and that our Maori children were not achieving as well as we wanted or expected.
- #3 Our focus at Ramanui is to base all that we do on Te Whariki so that there is a continuum for our children’s learning. Ultimately we want our children to be caring and committed citizens and have values that are reflected in their daily life
- #4 Straight from our charter document. These goals all focus on continued student achievement that is enabled through a “whole school whanau. We are all in this together. We support parents to educate their child. These are our goals and in order to meet them we had to become culturally responsive. 2006 – 48% Maori 2007– 56% Maori 2009 – 78% Maori 2010 – 86% Maori 2011 – 93% Maori
- #5 What we believe in. An opportunity to review and reflect on what is important.
- #6 The “new” NZ Curriculum has give us an opportunity to focus on our children and our whanau.
- #7 Shared understanding of who we are and where we want to be, how we are going to get there and when will we know! How will we get whanau input?
- #8 We are committed to developing Te Reo across the school as part of our endeavour to raise student achievement, particularly Maori, and because as a school we believe that a knowledge of dual cultural heritage is part of our being a Nzer 2010 87% of our children are Maori
- #9 It is the maintenance of the partnerships that lead to sustainability.
- #10 These are very real questions. If we cannot articulate the reason for doing what we are doing then is there any point of “engaging whanau”. An opportunity to share information and work cooperatively for the good of our children. An opportunity to share their child and work together to enable a “future” that is positive and rewarding to all stakeholders. For our children – we can affirm them, teach them new skills and most importantly develop values and competencies that will enable them to be caring and committed citizens. Because it takes a village to raise a child!

- #12 Consultation is the key – how to encourage open and frank discussion in an environment that is sharing, caring and honestly inclusive. We have to care what all stakeholders say is important. We have to actively humble ouselves and believe that WE don’t have all the answers We have to believe in the value of our whole school whanau.
- #13 Any opportunity that enables our community to come together is an opportunity for reflective dialogue about any aspect of “bringing up children”. Any opportunity that enables us the share, care, develop a sense of belonging and working together for our children is worth it. The “extra” effort and time needed to organise is huge and with committed teachers and whanau the positive reward is the smile at the end.
- #15 So how did we do this. 2010 Commitment Collegial discussion to see how much we already knew and what we needed to be familiar with if we were to walk the same path. Professional development was focussed in one area so that we could develop together.
