The present study was conducted to assess the performance of test cross hybrids and estimate the combining ability of highland maize inbred lines for grain yield and yield-related traits. 40 crosses generated by crossing twenty lines with two testers and two genetic checks were evaluated using alpha lattice design with two replications at Ambo and Kulumsa agricultural research centers in 2019 main cropping season. Analyses of variances showed significant mean squares due to crosses for all studied traits that indicated genetic variation among the materials. GCA mean square due to lines showed significant differences for all traits. Similarly, GCA mean square due to testers was significant for all traits except anthesis-silking interval, while SCA mean squares were significant only for grain yield and number of ears per plant. Inbred lines viz., L7, L13, L5, L2 and L18 were good general combiners for yield and yield attributing characters. Tester CML159 was high combiner for grain yield than CML144. Among the hybrids, L5 x T1, L18 x T1 and L12 x T1 exhibited high mean values over checks and highest SCA effects for yield and yield attributing traits, thus could be used for further use in the breeding and cultivar development process.

The16 Soybean genotypes were evaluated for Association of characters and path coefficient analysis on eleven important yield and grain yield contributing characters at Bako Tibe during the main cropping season of 2015/16. The experiment was designed as RCBD with three- replication. Generally, the magnitudes of genotypic correlation coefficients for most of the characters were higher than their corresponding phenotypic correlation coefficients that indicate the presence of inherent association among various characters. In this study yield was positively correlated with hundred seed weight, number of seed/pod and number of pod per plant so, increasing these traits ultimately increases in grain yield and days to maturity can be exploited through improvement and selection program. Based on findings it can be concluded that pod length, number of pod /plant, biological yield, grain yield and days to maturity can be exploited through selection and improvement program to develop high yielding soybean genotypes.

The aim of this study is to examine the ability of three Bifidobacterium (bifidum, breve, and infantis) and Lactobacillus paracasei 441 strains to survive at different pH values, and different bile salts concentrations for 3h, also to determine the stimulatory effect of L. paracasei 441 strain in combination with inulin on the viability of Bifidobacterium strains in fermented milk during 15 days at 4°C. Each tested strain was cultured with and without L. paracasei 441 in fermented milk, then each treatment was split into three groups [0,1.0, and 3.0 inulin (w/v %)] and incubated at 37°C for 3h. Our results showed that the bacterial populations of Bifidobacterium strains co-culturing with L. paracasei 441, and 1% Inulin) were significantly (P > 0.05) higher than in the control samples [without (L. paracasei 441 and inulin). Our results reveal that the presents of (L. paracasei 441, and inulin) was stimulated the viability of Bifidobacterium strains during storage condition.

The study was carried out to estimate correlation coefficients among grain yield and yield related traits and work out direct and indirect effects of yield-related traits on grain yield using path- coefficient analysis. Sixty-six F1 crosses and two standard checks were evaluated at Mechara, Ethiopia. The analysis of variance revealed that mean squares due to entries and crosses were highly significant (p<0.01)><0.05) for most traits studied, indicating the existence of variability among the materials evaluated, which could be exploited for the improvement of respective traits. Grain yield showed positive and highly significant correlations with most traits at phenotypic and genotypic levels. Ear diameter and number of kernels per row exerted positive direct effect and also had positive association with grain yield. These traits could be used as a reliable indicator in indirect selection for higher grain yield since their direct effect and association with grain yield were positive at phenotypic and genotypic levels. Traits having strong relationship with grain yield can be used for indirect selection to improve grain yield because grain yield can be simultaneously improved along with the traits for which it showed strong relationship.

Seventy five genotypes of cultivated cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) were studied for morphological characteristics i-e plant height, monopodial branches, sympodial branches, boll weight, seed volume, seed density, seed index and fiber characters. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and estimates were made for genetic advance, broad sense heritability and coefficient of variance for the traits. ANOVA revealed highly significant variability among genotypes for all the characteristics studied. The estimates for heritability were higher for seed index (0.93) and plant height (0.93). The highest value (6.4) for genetic advance was observed for sympodial branches whereas lowest value was (0.17) for boll weight. Correlation analysis revealed positive and significant for most of the parameters. In path coefficient, the number of sympodial branches, boll weight, lint index and lint weight had maximum direct and positive effect on fiber fineness of seed cotton. Whereas, the number of monopodial branches, plant height, seed index, seed volume, seed density, staple length, fiber strength and ginning out turn (G.O.T%) had direct and negative effects on fiber of seed cotton. The principle component analysis (PCA) revealed significant differences between genotypes and the first four components with Eigen values greater than 1 contributed 66.68% of the variability among the genotypes. The grouping of genotypes possessing excelled traits signifies genetic potential of the germplasm for the improvement of seed and fiber characteristics in cotton crop. A 4-week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the performance and blood profiles of finisher broilers fed cashew pulp meal (CPM) based diets. 135 finisher broilers, “Arbor acre” strain was randomly allocated to five dietary treatments consisting of three replicates of 9 finisher broilers each. Five on-farm diets containing 0 (control), 10, 20, 30, and 40% CPM replacing maize coded as T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5, respectively, were formulated. All performance parameters measured were significantly different (P < 0.05). Final weight, daily weight gain (DWG), daily feed intake, feed conversion ratio, mortality, feed cost/kg gain (feed cost/kg gain), and cost of 1 kg feed ranged from 1042.54 to 1305.55g, 16.31 to 28.51g, 91.86 to 110.54g, 3.26 to 5.56, 0 to 22.22%, 115.43 to 135.46, and 414.23 to 611.43, respectively. Hematological profile show that packed cell volume varied from 28.67 to 31.00%, hemoglobin (Hb) 9.07 to 10.60g/dl, red blood cell 1.80 to 2.31 × 106/μl, white blood cell 213.13 to 223.67 × 103/μl, mean corpuscular volume 132.27 to 134.87 fl, means corpuscular Hb (MCH) concentration 29.80 to 31.63 g/dl, and MCH 40.10 to 41.87 pg, respectively, and were significantly (P < 0.05) different. Treatments showed significant difference (P < 0.05) all serum parameters, the obtained values were total protein 4.25–4.92 g/dl, albumin 1.73–2.37 g/dl, aspartate aminotransferase 102.33–135.67 μ/l, alanine aminotransferase 4.00–7.33 μ/l, and total cholesterol 2.37–3.73 Mmol/l. The study showed that CPM depressed live weight but did not affect birds’ health even at 40% replacement of maize.

Abstract In the study three maize cultivars including KSC704, KSC703 and KSC260 were evaluated in terms of the nutritive value and metabolizable energy. The metabolizable energy was determined through In vivo method. For this purpose, 16 adult Rhode Island roosters (at the age of 28 to 30 months) with an average weight of 2943.33±200 g were fed by 35 g milled maize after 24 hours full starvation. The results showed that the highest amounts (on the basis of dry matter content) of crude protein (11.65%), crude fat (4.70%), gross energy (4413.15kcal/kg) and dry matter (93.21%) were found for KSC260.the highest Apparent Metabolizable Energy (2892.49 kcal/ kg dry matter) and Apparent Metabolizable Energy corrected to zero nitrogen balance (3081.98 Kcal/kg dry matter) were observed for KSC703, which revealed significant differences with those in KSC704 (P≤0.01). the highest True Metabolizable energy (4117.60 kcal/kg dry matter) and True Metabolizable Energy corrected to zero nitrogen balance (3929.69 kcal/kg dry matter) were observed in KSC260, which showed significant differences with those in KSC703 and KSC704 (P≤0.01). Overall, it could be concluded that the new maize cultivars KSC260 and KSC703 are in good status in terms of the recommended nutritive levels for poultry diet.

This experiment assessed substitution level of soybean meal by mung bean protein concentrate (MBPC) in layer’s diet. Unsatiating demand for animal protein, the need to prudently utilize feeding resources and minimize footprints in food chain/business, use of local raw-material is imperative. 180 ISA Brown2000 hens, assigned to 9 treatments (2 replications, 10 hens each) were fed experimental diets for 4 periods (49-52wks) and were evaluated for their performance. Their diet contained 2 grades of MBPC (70% CP and 75% CP). T1 was control diet. T2-T5 contained MBPC (70% CP) at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% substitution levels, respectively. T6-T9 contained MBPC (75% CP) at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% substitution levels, respectively. The results revealed that egg production (%) and egg mass were not significantly different in 1st three periods but it was in the 4th period (P<0.05). T1 had the highest egg production (%) but not significantly different in overall periods. Progressively decreasing egg production and FCR was observed through the periods without a significant difference. Egg weight was significantly different in 4th period. Economic benefit returns (EBR) was not significantly different among treatments. It is concluded that MBPC (70% & 75% CP) can substitute 25% SBM in layer’s diet without adverse effect on performance and EBR.

The analysis of variance revealed that mean squares due to entries and crosses were highly significant (p<0.01)><0.05) for most traits studied, indicating the existence of variability among the materials evaluated, which could be exploited for the improvement of respective traits. Grain yield showed positive and highly significant correlations with most traits at phenotypic and genotypic levels. Ear diameter and number of kernels per row exerted positive direct effect and also had positive association with grain yield. These traits could be used as a reliable indicator in indirect selection for higher grain yield since their direct effect and association with grain yield were positive at phenotypic and genotypic levels. Traits having strong relationship with grain yield can be used for indirect selection to improve grain yield because grain yield can be simultaneously improved along with the traits for which it showed strong relationship.

Seventy five genotypes of cultivated cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) were studied for morphological characteristics i-e plant height, monopodial branches, sympodial branches, boll weight, seed volume, seed density, seed index and fiber characters. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and estimates were made for genetic advance, broad sense heritability and coefficient of variance for the traits. ANOVA revealed highly significant variability among genotypes for all the characteristics studied. The estimates for heritability were higher for seed index (0.93) and plant height (0.93). The highest value (6.4) for genetic advance was observed for sympodial branches whereas lowest value was (0.17) for boll weight. Correlation analysis revealed positive and significant for most of the parameters. In path coefficient, the number of sympodial branches, boll weight, lint index and lint weight had maximum direct and positive effect on fiber fineness of seed cotton. Whereas, the number of monopodial branches, plant height, seed index, seed volume, seed density, staple length, fiber strength and ginning out turn (G.O.T%) had direct and negative effects on fiber of seed cotton. The principle component analysis (PCA) revealed significant differences between genotypes and the first four components with Eigen values greater than 1 contributed 66.68% of the variability among the genotypes. The grouping of genotypes possessing excelled traits signifies genetic potential of the germplasm for the improvement of seed and fiber characteristics in cotton crop. A 4-week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the performance and blood profiles of finisher broilers fed cashew pulp meal (CPM) based diets. 135 finisher broilers, “Arbor acre” strain was randomly allocated to five dietary treatments consisting of three replicates of 9 finisher broilers each. Five on-farm diets containing 0 (control), 10, 20, 30, and 40% CPM replacing maize coded as T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5, respectively, were formulated. All performance parameters measured were significantly different (P < 0.05). Final weight, daily weight gain (DWG), daily feed intake, feed conversion ratio, mortality, feed cost/kg gain (feed cost/kg gain), and cost of 1 kg feed ranged from 1042.54 to 1305.55g, 16.31 to 28.51g, 91.86 to 110.54g, 3.26 to 5.56, 0 to 22.22%, 115.43 to 135.46, and 414.23 to 611.43, respectively. Hematological profile show that packed cell volume varied from 28.67 to 31.00%, hemoglobin (Hb) 9.07 to 10.60g/dl, red blood cell 1.80 to 2.31 × 106/μl, white blood cell 213.13 to 223.67 × 103/μl, mean corpuscular volume 132.27 to 134.87 fl, means corpuscular Hb (MCH) concentration 29.80 to 31.63 g/dl, and MCH 40.10 to 41.87 pg, respectively, and were significantly (P < 0.05) different. Treatments showed significant difference (P < 0.05) all serum parameters, the obtained values were total protein 4.25–4.92 g/dl, albumin 1.73–2.37 g/dl, aspartate aminotransferase 102.33–135.67 μ/l, alanine aminotransferase 4.00–7.33 μ/l, and total cholesterol 2.37–3.73 Mmol/l. The study showed that CPM depressed live weight but did not affect birds’ health even at 40% replacement of maize.

Abstract In the study three maize cultivars including KSC704, KSC703 and KSC260 were evaluated in terms of the nutritive value and metabolizable energy. The metabolizable energy was determined through In vivo method. For this purpose, 16 adult Rhode Island roosters (at the age of 28 to 30 months) with an average weight of 2943.33±200 g were fed by 35 g milled maize after 24 hours full starvation. The results showed that the highest amounts (on the basis of dry matter content) of crude protein (11.65%), crude fat (4.70%), gross energy (4413.15kcal/kg) and dry matter (93.21%) were found for KSC260.the highest Apparent Metabolizable Energy (2892.49 kcal/ kg dry matter) and Apparent Metabolizable Energy corrected to zero nitrogen balance (3081.98 Kcal/kg dry matter) were observed for KSC703, which revealed significant differences with those in KSC704 (P≤0.01). the highest True Metabolizable energy (4117.60 kcal/kg dry matter) and True Metabolizable Energy corrected to zero nitrogen balance (3929.69 kcal/kg dry matter) were observed in KSC260, which showed significant differences with those in KSC703 and KSC704 (P≤0.01). Overall, it could be concluded that the new maize cultivars KSC260 and KSC703 are in good status in terms of the recommended nutritive levels for poultry diet.

This experiment assessed substitution level of soybean meal by mung bean protein concentrate (MBPC) in layer’s diet. Unsatiating demand for animal protein, the need to prudently utilize feeding resources and minimize footprints in food chain/business, use of local raw-material is imperative. 180 ISA Brown2000 hens, assigned to 9 treatments (2 replications, 10 hens each) were fed experimental diets for 4 periods (49-52wks) and were evaluated for their performance. Their diet contained 2 grades of MBPC (70% CP and 75% CP). T1 was control diet. T2-T5 contained MBPC (70% CP) at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% substitution levels, respectively. T6-T9 contained MBPC (75% CP) at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% substitution levels, respectively. The results revealed that egg production (%) and egg mass were not significantly different in 1st three periods but it was in the 4th period (P<0.05). T1 had the highest egg production (%) but not significantly different in overall periods. Progressively decreasing egg production and FCR was observed through the periods without a significant difference. Egg weight was significantly different in 4th period. Economic benefit returns (EBR) was not significantly different among treatments. It is concluded that MBPC (70% & 75% CP) can substitute 25% SBM in layer’s diet without adverse effect on performance and EBR.

Sixteen groundnut genotypes (including local check) were evaluated for quantitative parameters. The crop was sown during 2015 wet season in Ethiopia across four locations. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Twelve quantitative parameters were studied. The analysis of variance revealed the prevalence of significant difference among the genotypes for all studied parameters. Based on mean performance of genotypes Beha gudo, Manipeter and Werer-962 were found to be best for grain yield in kg/ha. High to moderate estimates of genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) were exhibited by all characters except for SHP and NSP indicating that those characters could be used as selection indices for crop improvement. High heritability was observed for 100SW (91.2%), AGBP (90.3%), NBP (90.2%), PH (89.4%), NMP (86.8%), NSPOD (85.7%), HI (83.7%) and KY (79.7%) accompanied by high genetic advance indicating the predominant role of additive gene action and the possibilities of effective selection for the improvement of groundnut genotypes based on these characters. Low broad sense heritability and low genetic advance was observed only for SHP and NSP indicating low genetic potentials for these characters and non-additive gene effect prevails.

This study enumerates the bacterial and fungal isolates responsible for the fermentation of millet sourdoughs, evaluates the antimicrobial safety of the sourdough starters and the quality of bread produced thereafter. The individual flours were spontaneously fermented in the ratio 1:1 (w/v) for 48 h. At the end of the fermentation, the microbial consortium of the sourdough meals obtained were determined and also screened for antagonistic activity against selected pathogens. All the sourdough starters revealed strong clearance zones against the selected food borne pathogens with values ranging from 5.00 to 16.1 mm. The proximate compositions of the breads were improved by the sourdough fermentation process compared with the raw flour. The moisture content of flour determined ranged from 7.48 to 11.20% while the protein, fat, ash, crude fibre and carbohydrate were 9.53 to 12.4%; 2.13 to 2.78%; 0.82 to 2.87%; 2.10 to 4.67% and 71.83 to 76.33% respectively. The carbohydrate content of the breads reduced with fermentation and ranged from 63.10% to 73.33% while the protein, ash, crude fibre and fat content increased and ranged from 11.57 to 15.31%; 2.39 to 3.08%; 1.76 to 3.62% and 7.15 to 12.32% respectively. The highest value for calcium 48.86 mg/100 g was exhibited by pearl millet bread. Sensory evaluation showed significant difference (P < 0.05) in the appearance, taste, colour, aroma and texture of the bread samples. The findings have suggested that indigenous wholegrain cereals could be employed for bread production, which has the potential to improve the nutritional profile and safety of cereal fermented foods which forms the bulk of the diet of rural dwellers in sub-Saharan Africa.

The effect of different physical form feeds (pellet and mash) and stocking density on the growth performance characteristics of carcass and immunity of Ross-308 broiler chicks were studied. A total of 1800 one day-old ross-308 mixed-sex broilers were used in a completely randomized design with six treatments and four replicates of 75 birds each. They were arranged in a 2×3 factorial design: two feed forms (mash and pellet) and three stocking density (10, 14 and 18 bird/m2). Live body Weight (LW), Weight Gain (WG), Feed Intake (FI) and Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) were measured periodically (0-10, 11-24 and 25-42 days). Carcass components and litter quality were recorded at the end of the trial (day 45). Also antibody titer against SRBC, and heterophil to lymphocyte ratio were measured in 45 day of age. The highest body weight in grower period was observed in the pellet diet form (p<0.05). Also the highest Body Weight (BW) and Body Weight Gain (BWG) in the starter period was observed in the lowest stocking density treatment (10 bird/m2) (p<0.05). Physical form of diet had no significant effect on feed intake, BW and FCR throughout the periods. However the broiler feed intake was significantly influenced by stocking density and a decrease in the high stocking density group (18 bird/m2). Different types of feed and stocking density had no significant effect on carcass characteristics, antibody titer and H:L ratio. Use of pellet form diet and high stocking density treatment (18 bird/m2) significantly increased broiler litter moisture (P<0.05).

Also the highest Body Weight (BW) and Body Weight Gain (BWG) in the starter period was observed in the lowest stocking density treatment (10 bird/m2) (p<0.05). Physical form of diet had no significant effect on feed intake, BW and FCR throughout the periods. However the broiler feed intake was significantly influenced by stocking density and a decrease in the high stocking density group (18 bird/m2). Different types of feed and stocking density had no significant effect on carcass characteristics, antibody titer and H:L ratio. Use of pellet form diet and high stocking density treatment (18 bird/m2) significantly increased broiler litter moisture (P<0.05).

The present research study evaluate and identify the most suitable and high yielding genotypes of Lens culinaris for the salt marsh habitat of Swat in moist temperate sort of agro climatic environment of Pakistan. A total of fourteen genotypes were cultivated and analyzed through Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). These genotypes were AZRC-4, NL-2, NL4, NL-5, NL-6, NARC-11-1, NARC-11-2, NARC-11-3, NARC-11-4, 09503, 09505, 09506, P.Masoor-09 and Markaz-09. Different parameters i.e., germination rate, flowering, physiological maturity, plant height, biological grain yield, seed weight, pods formation and its height, pods per plants and protein content were focused specially throughout the study. Preliminary the Lentil genotypes have significant variability in all the major morpho-agronomic traits. The days to germination, 50% flowering and 100 seed weight ranged from 7 to 9, 110 to 116 days, and from 5.4 to 7.3 gm respectively. Biological yield and grain yield ranged from 5333 to 9777 kg ha−1 and 1933 to 3655 kg ha−1 respectively. Whereas, protein contents ranged from 23.21% to 28.45%. It was concluded that the genotype AZRC-4 is better varity in terms of grain yield plus in 100 seed weight and moreover, 09506 genotype was significant under salt marsh habitat in early maturing for the Swat Valley, Pakistan.

A comparative study on the response of six maize hybrids: two hybrids each from the 1980s (8321-21 and 8425-8), 1990s (9801-11 and 9803-2) and 2000s (0103-11 and 0103-15) to sub-optimal and optimal nitrogen fertilization was conducted in Oke-Oyi, Nigeria. The trials were set up in a split plot with three nitrogen levels (0, 30 and 90 kg N ha-1) as a main plot and six hybrids as sub-plots. Significant interactions were observed between hybrid and N level for all characters, with increasing in variation as the level of N decreased. Mean grain yield reductions across eras were 73.8% at no-N and 32.6% at low-N, and those of optimal-N fertilization were 34.3% and 15.7% for 1980s and 1990s genotypes respectively. Depending on N treatment, grain yield varied from 0.67 to 4.89 t ha-1. Kernel number was most severely reduced by N stress, but had positive and highly significant (p≤0.01) correlation with grain yield at all N levels. Genetic gains in grain yield were 42% (between 1980 and 2000 eras) and 9% (between 1990 and 2000 eras) under optimal-N fertilization. The two modern hybrids of 2000 era (0103-11 and 0103-15) were outstanding for all the agronomic traits and leaf chlorophyll concentration at all N levels. Improving traits associated with fertilizer N response could accelerate rate of genetic gains in maize yields.

Soya bean is a multi-purpose crop. The area of production for soybeans is expected to increase due raised demand of domestic processing industries and boosted demand for use in animal feed. This experiment were conducted with the objective of identify superior genotypes in terms of yield, insect pest & disease tolerance/resistance and with desirable agronomic traits for the last two years of (2014 & 2015). Analysis of variance showed that there were significant difference among the varieties in terms of disease reaction, grain yield and yield related attributes. Korme, Ethio-eugoslavia and Didesa provided about 32.67%, 29.11%, 22.55%, yield advantages over the standard check (Clark), respectively. Therefore, the three high yielding varieties (Korme, Ethio-eugoslavia, and Didesa) were selected and recommended for further production at Fedis and similar agro-ecologies. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media.
