HISTORY OF MUSIC
At the beginning of Spain's existence, many
different cultures helped to shape the history
of Spanish music. The early Romans brought
music from near-by Greece, and a different
style of religious music, beats, and chants had
a major impact on Spanish music.

As the birth of Spanish music was beginning
            to blossom, the Reconquista (711-1492)
brought a sudden halt to music since the
            government prohibited such music.

With the Renaissance, the Spanish guitar was
created and the musical culture improved.
Musicians traveled to many places and in the
process picked up new ideas, especially
            Roman ideas.

HISTORY OF MUSIC
              (CONTINUED)
Spanish classical music declined for nearly 200 years
as the Zarzuela, a lighter, Spanish form of opera,
developed, making it a hit that persists even today.

After the Spanish Civil War, Francisco Franco, the
new Spanish leader, banned all cultural aspects of
life: including music. But the wide range of music
did not disappear; only the ability to practice it was
carefully regulated.

At the end of Francisco Franco's rule, pop and rock
n' roll music became a major hit. The earliest
Spanish pop imitated French pop, which was
already imitating American and British pop. The
only difference was the Spanish style of flamenco,
that gave it an authentic touch.
