PROJECT HISTORY
NGO —A Non-Governmental Organization : is a legally constituted organization created by private organizations or people with no participation or representation of any government. In the cases of NGOs which are funded totally or partially by governments, the NGO maintains its non-governmental status in so far as it excludes government representatives from membership in the organization. The number of internationally operating NGOs is estimated at 40,000.National numbers are even higher: Russia has 277,000 NGOs. India is estimated to have between 1 million and 2 million NGOs . What is a NGO?
SEWA
Self Employed Women's Association
SEWA is a trade union registered in 1972. It is an organisation of poor, self-employed women workers. These women are who earn a living through their own labour or small businesses. They do not obtain regular salaried employment with welfare benefits like workers in the organized sector. They are the unprotected labour force of our country. Constituting 93% of the labour force, these are workers of the unorganized sector. Of the female labour force in India, more than 94% are in the unorganized sector. However their work is not counted and hence remains invisible. In fact, women workers themselves remain uncounted, undercounted and invisible. INTRODUCTION
