UD-UQ ELI
A thank you message to the teachers at the UD-UQ ELI
By Pham Xuan Thuy, Student of IELTS5-02 Class
My name’s Xuan Thuy. I’m a student in the IELTS 5 -02 class. Today,
I’m pleased to tell you about my class. It’s really interesting and I
think if I am asked questions like “Why is it interesting?” “Thanks to
my teachers” will be my answer. Actually, I write this letter to
specifically thank Dudley, Lynda and Denise.
When talking about Dudley, I’m sure that every student in my class
can say he is always humorous and enthusiastic. For example, he is
so absorbed in teaching that many times he almost forgets the time.
In addition, he’s really good at teaching pronunciation and
sometimes we joke together “Mr Dudley is a master of
pronunciation”. “Teaching pronunciation is my job”, Mr Dudley said.
Mr Pham Xuan Thuy Thanks to his exciting and efficient lessons, pronunciation of the
students in my class has improved rapidly.
Lynda, in my mind she’s my mother and my friend. It’s not real but I feel that because I can share with her many things
about my studying and my family. For instance, my speaking is not good. I asked her for help. Immediately, she gave me
many pieces of advice. It really works. She also suggests that I should spend 30 minutes reading English everyday. It was
so helpful that later on even though I‘m really busy I try to keep this habit. Moreover, I think any student who has
problems in studying can also meet Lynda – Director of Studies and their problems can be solved immediately.
Ms Denise, I had my first impression about her when she taught me the first lesson. The students in my class were very
surprised about the letter from Denise which was written in order to understand our English skill and our enquiries. She
always listens to every student. She’s really a well –qualified teacher. She teaches me writing skill. Every class, I give her
my homework and she corrects it and explains my mistakes. I like her teaching style which is strict but efficient.
The UD –UQ ELI has so many good points and among these, in my opinion, the teachers are the best. My course will finish
in next short time but I don’t want it to happen soon because I must leave my teachers.
A quick word from UD-UQ ELI Resource Centre!
By Nguyen Anh Pha Trang, Casual Staff
Working as a casual staff, as well as an officer who takes care of the Resource Center, I find that the Resource Center
(RC) is very useful for students who want to improve their English, for those who are preparing for IELTS tests, and also
for officers and workers who need English for their jobs and their majors.
With a variety of English books, CDs, and tapes, students have the chance to study and practice their English. Everyday,
students come to the RC to read books, do their exercises, listen to CDs, or use English software on the computers. For
IELTS candidates, there are a lot of materials focusing on reading, listening, writing and grammar, and many IELTS test
samples which help students be well-prepared for their test.
When coming to the RC, students will be helped and consulted to choose a suitable reference book and shown how to
read it effectively by foreign teachers or a RC Officer. Also, students can read and research many books and materials
for specific purposes such as tourism, reception, computer etc. The RC has a number of English stories, and English
novels by famous authors. Reading interesting stories helps students relax after hard study. Moreover, there is a special
area for English newspapers and magazines such as Vietnam News, Bangkok Post, and the International Herald Tribune.
When being asked, “What do you think about RC?”, Pham Viet Trung, a student of Conversation class said “I have only
one word for it. Great!” I can use a lot of books here, listen to tapes, CDs …I can get updated about the world everyday
by reading many kinds of English newspaper and learn more information about society. In general, The Resource Center
is great, I like it! “
Please visit the RC by joining as a UD-UQ ELI student, a member of “Friends of the UD-UQ ELI” or as a member of the
Speaking Club and you will see what I have said is completely true!

The IELTS exam at the UD-UQ ELI
By Nguyen Thi Huong Tra, IELTS Administration Assistant
IELTS is very popular for those who need it for their career promotion and their further education. Taking the IELTS test
sounds like it would be easy if you just pay the fee and then do the exam. Actually, it is not that easy. Having
experience as an IELTS candidate 3 years ago and an IELTS invigilator now, I have had a lot of discussions with other
candidates about how to optimise their opportunities when they decide to take the exam. It is not only a matter of how
hard you try during the preparation period and how intensively you concentrate during the exam time, another factor is
the institute where you decide to register for your test.
Why?
The reason is that you need to choose an institute where you are helped to complete your registration correctly and
quickly by professional staff. A well-equipped institute provides with a good environment so that you can fully
concentrate on your test without being disturbed by noise or other impediments.
Why do candidates from many provinces of Vietnam choose the UD-UQ ELI for IELTS test?
The answer is that they believe the UD-UQ ELI can provide them with the best service for their IELTS success. When
enrolling, candidates will be advised how to fill in the application form correctly, provided with information relating to
IELTS such as what IELTS score might be required by some universities, what they should bring into the test room and
when they will receive your results. A formal letter is sent to candidates to confirm this information again. When the test
day comes, candidates are instructed carefully right from arrival and then in the test room on how to best use their time
after each test session and avoid unnecessary mistakes. The area for IELTS is kept absolutely secure and quiet during
the time. After the written test, candidates are advised on the time and venue for speaking test.
The preparation for the IELTS test and instructions for IELTS candidates are completed and checked one day before the
test.
In general, taking the IELTS test is a positive step towards higher education or a better job. But it should be done in the
way that you can benefit most. The UD-UQ ELI is trying its best to contribute to the success of all candidates.

The Scarlet Letter
By Vo Hoang Thuy Trang, Customer Service Officer
It is just a letter but the woman wearing that letter on her bosom is a
woman who has sinned. Why does she have to suffer this hurt? Love and
shame, love and revenge, they make people die while they are living.
The pain of this person is the joy of another. The shame of the woman
is the haunted sin of her lover. Readers may recognize these feelings
throughout the book.
While reading the book you can see what the woman did while facing
accusing looks from others and how the respectable man felt while
trying to hide his injury and evil. The internal life of each character is
shown gradually when the baby, little Pearl, grows up day by day. She is
the pride of her mother but scorned by everyone else.
Sometimes pain makes people stronger. However, it is also a reason to push men to become hopeless and weak.
Every choice in our life will lead us to different destinations. Happiness or misfortune, the choice is ours. Read this
book and experience how life can be.

Spotlight on New Zealand
By Huynh Thi Nguyet Thi, Administration Assistant
New Zealand is a country in the south western Pacific Ocean comprising of
two large islands (the North Island and the South Island) and numerous
smaller islands. The total land area of 268,680 square kilometers
(103,738 sq mi) is a little less than that of Italy or Japan, and a little more
than the United Kingdom. The population is mostly of European descent, Flag
with the indigenous Maori being the largest minority.
New Zealand has strong gender equality demonstrated by the fact that all
the highest offices in the land have been occupied simultaneously by
women: Queen Elizabeth II, Governor - General Dame Silvia Cartwright,
