A Common Platform: Flood Response
Colorado experienced historic flooding in 2013 that required a coordinated response from government agencies. The Colorado Department of Public Safety and Longmont Power & Communications used ArcGIS Online and Collector for ArcGIS to effectively manage response and recovery efforts. These tools allowed them to create and share live maps of flooding impacts, road closures, and infrastructure damage. Field teams could update maps in real-time to track inspection progress and direct repair work. The common operating platform provided by ArcGIS helped leaders understand the crisis and optimize response activities.

An Effective Tool for Drinking Water Protection

The Utah Division of Water Quality conducted an inspection of the US Magnesium facility and found evidence of ongoing, unpermitted discharges of pollution to waters of the state. Specifically, the inspection found discharges from the facility into the Skull Valley Diversion Ditch and releases of wastewater north of the plant property that had not been reported. The inspection also found evidence of loss of containment from the facility's wastewater impoundment, including sinkholes and dissolution features caused by acidic wastewater interacting with sediments. As a result, the Division of Water Quality is requiring US Magnesium to submit plans to prevent future uncontrolled releases and to apply for necessary discharge permits.

Abstract
Lake Theo in Caprock Canyons State Park, Texas has visually fluctuated in volume over the past few decades. The study analyzed monthly Landsat imagery from 1999-2014 to determine surface area changes. Bathymetry data from 254 depth readings and 634 topography points were combined in a 3D model to calculate monthly volumes. Precipitation, groundwater influx, evaporation, soil infiltration, siltation, runoff, and biological factors potentially influence volume fluctuations, but groundwater contribution and stream flow appear to play a large role in controlling the lake's volume.

TGS provides geological products and services to support oil and gas exploration, including basin modeling, play analysis, and seismic interpretation. They have developed basin temperature models for major North American basins using bottom hole temperature data. TGS also offers formation top correlations, play fairway analysis identifying reservoir-seal-source combinations, prospectivity mapping, and a facies map browser application to view sequence stratigraphy results. These interpretation products help companies better understand basin geology and identify exploration opportunities.

US Magnesium LOV Ltr
The Utah Division of Water Quality conducted an inspection of the US Magnesium facility and found evidence of ongoing, unpermitted discharges of pollution to waters of the state. Specifically, the inspection found discharges from the facility into the Skull Valley Diversion Ditch and releases of wastewater north of the plant property that had not been reported. The inspection also found evidence of loss of containment from the facility's wastewater impoundment, including sinkholes and dissolution features caused by acidic wastewater interacting with sediments. As a result, the Division of Water Quality is requiring US Magnesium to submit plans to prevent future uncontrolled releases and to apply for necessary discharge permits.

The results will be included in an environmental and recreational water use study of the basin.

Abstract
Lake Theo in Caprock Canyons State Park, Texas has visually fluctuated in volume over the past few decades. The study analyzed monthly Landsat imagery from 1999-2014 to determine surface area changes. Bathymetry data from 254 depth readings and 634 topography points were combined in a 3D model to calculate monthly volumes. Precipitation, groundwater influx, evaporation, soil infiltration, siltation, runoff, and biological factors potentially influence volume fluctuations, but groundwater contribution and stream flow appear to play a large role in controlling the lake's volume.

TGS provides geological products and services to support oil and gas exploration, including basin modeling, play analysis, and seismic interpretation. They have developed basin temperature models for major North American basins using bottom hole temperature data. TGS also offers formation top correlations, play fairway analysis identifying reservoir-seal-source combinations, prospectivity mapping, and a facies map browser application to view sequence stratigraphy results. These interpretation products help companies better understand basin geology and identify exploration opportunities.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.

USGS Stream Gauging Station Did you ever notice the large pipe extending up out of the North Elkhorn Creek at Cardome Park? This is a USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) stream gauging station used to take measure- ments of the flow (water discharge measured in cubic feet per second) and height (measured in feet relative to gauge datum) of the water currently in North Elkhorn Creek. This information is recorded continuously and sent to the USGS office where it can be viewed through their website in real time, or with a slight time delay. This gauge in particular is noted as USGS 03288100 North Elkhorn Creek at Georgetown, KY and has been in operation in coordination with the Kentucky River Authority, the City of Georgetown, and the Scott County Emergency Management since 1992. These gauges are located all over the state and can be used to help predict flooding and to calibrate flood prediction models when used in conjunction with reported rainfall amounts upstream in the watershed area. The great thing about the USGS website, besides being able to look up current flow rates when planning an outdoor adventure, is that it has a feature called “WaterAlert” that can send you a message (text or email) when the flow or gauge height reaches a cer- tain threshold.
