The Business Value of VCE Vblock Systems: Leveraging Convergence to Drive Business Agility
In the past decade, information technology (IT) evolved from an enabler of back-office business processes to the very foundation of a modern business. In the increasingly digital and mobile world, the datacenter is often the first and most frequent point of contact with customers. The ability to innovate quickly lies at the heart of today’s changing business models. Businesses expect their IT investments to accelerate their pace of innovation, provide flexibility to meet new demands, and continually reduce the costs of operations.
Converged infrastructure is essential for many companies to ensure that their datacenter infrastructures can meet today’s challenges. The business rationale for deploying converged infrastructure goes far beyond traditional IT feeds and speeds. Customers using converged solutions like VCE’s Vblock Systems (Vblock) realize lower costs, greater levels of utilization, and reduced downtime. VCE customers in this study recognized business benefits such as improved organizational agility, faster application development, increased innovation, and improved employee productivity.
IDC interviewed 16 VCE Vblock Systems customers to understand and quantify the benefits delivered by their Vblock converged infrastructure deployments. Vblock Systems are built by VCE using compute, network, and storage technologies and virtualization software from Cisco, EMC, and VMware.
IDC found that by using Vblock Systems, these organizations recorded improved business outcomes and that these improvements are increasingly driving IT investment decisions.
All VCE customers interviewed for this study generated substantial business value by consolidating their IT infrastructures with Vblock. IDC calculates that these VCE customers will generate five-year discounted benefits worth an average of $384,202 per 100 users by using Vblock, which will result in an average return on investment (ROI) of 518% and a payback period of 7.5 months.

With cloud computing, cheap storage and technology advancements, an enterprise uses multiple
applications to operate business functions. Applications are not limited to just transactions, customer
service, sales, finance but they also include security, application logs, marketing, engineering, operations,
HR and many more. Each business vertical uses multiple applications which generate a huge amount of
data. On top of that, social media, IoT sensors, SaaS solutions, and mobile applications record exponential
growth in data volume. In almost all enterprises, data silos exist through these applications. These
applications can produce structured, semi-structured, or unstructured data at different velocity and in
different volume. Having all data sources integrated and generating timely insights helps in overall
decision making. With recent development in Big Data Integration, data silos can be managed better and it
can generate tremendous value for enterprises. Big data integration offers flexibility, speed and scalability
for integrating large data sources. It also offers tools to generate analytical insights which can help
stakeholders to make effective decisions. This paper presents the overview on data silos, challenges with
data silos and how big data integration can help to stun them.

DATA CENTER CONSOLIDATION AT GUARDIAN LIFE
As one of the largest mutual life insurance firms in the United States, Guardian Life (www.guardianlife.com) has more than 5000 employees and over 3000 financial representatives in 80 agencies. Guardian and its subsidiaries provide almost three million people with life and disability income insurance, retirement services, and investment products such as mutual funds, securities, variable life insurance, and variable annuities. The company also supplies employee benefits programs to six million participants, including life, health, and dental insurance, as well as qualified pension plans. In addition to regional home offices in New York City; Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; Spokane, Washington; and Appleton, Wisconsin, the company has 55 remote sales offices and 80 remote agency offices.
Like other insurance companies, Guardian Life is an information intensive organization where data processing and communications network infrastructure have consistently been important contributors to its success. Guardian Life’s IT organization has earned numerous accolades including multiple CIO100 awards from
CIO
magazine [PRNE11]. According to Dennis Callahan, Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer for, Guardian Life, "A strong partnership between IT and the businesses enables
C7-1
Guardian to deliver cost-effective technology services that facilitate world- class customer service, product innovation, and operational efficiency.” Ensuring alignment between business and IT is important to Guardian Life and provides a consistent theme for many of the insurance companies IT projects including its data center consolidation initiatives [CIOZ12].
Data center consolidation has been an ongoing concern at Guardian for more than a decade. Guardian’s IT governance structure is team-oriented and the company’s data center consolidation initiatives are overseen by it Infrastructure team. The Infrastructure team is primarily co-located in New York, and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania but it has key support teams in Spokane, Washington, Appleton, Wisconsin, and Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
Guardian Life began taking a serious look at data center consolidation in 2000, but in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack, Guardian also became more concerned with business continuity issues. Guardian had four significant data centers, at its four home offices, but the primary data center was in New York City. After 9/11, Guardian wanted make infrastructure changes to ensure business continuity across its existing data centers and made plans to add two more data centers to the mix.
Guardian performed an assessment of its data centers to provide a basis for planning on the location of data processing resources. One surprising outcome of this assessment had to do with utilization. The assessment revealed that the four data centers had about 1000 UNIX and NT servers, with an average capacity utilization of 1 ...

TUC Income (“Income”), one of
Singapore’s largest insurers, has over 1.8
million policy holders with total assets of
S$21.3 billion. The insurer employs about
3,400 insurance advisors and 1,200 office staff, with
the majority located across an eight-branch network.
On June 1, 2003, Income succeeded in the migra-
tion of its legacy insurance systems to a digital web-
based system. The Herculean task required not only
the upgrading of hardware and applications, it also
required Income to streamline its decade-old busi-
ness processes and IT practices.
Until a few years ago, Income’s insurance pro-
cesses were very tedious and paper-based. The entire
insurance process started with customers meeting
an agent, filling in forms and submitting documents.
The agent would then submit the forms at branches,
from where they were sent by couriers to the Office
Services department. The collection schedule could
introduce delays of two to three days. Office Services
would log documents, sort them, and then send
them to departments for underwriting. Proposals
were allocated to underwriting staff, mostly at
random. Accepted proposals were sent for print-
ing at the Computer Services department and then
redistributed. For storage, all original documents
were packed and sent to warehouses where, over
two to three days, a total of seven staff would log and
store the documents. In all, paper policies compris-
ing 45 million documents were stored in over 16,000
cartons at three warehouses. Whenever a document
needed to be retrieved, it would take about two days
to locate and ship it by courier. Refiling would again
take about two days.
In 2002, despite periodic investments to upgrade
the HP 3000 mainframe that hosted the core insur-
ance applications as well as the accounting and
management information systems, it still frequently
broke down. When a system breakdown did occur,
work had to be stopped while data was restored.
Additionally, the HP 3000 backup system could only
restore the data to the version from the previous day.
This meant that backups had to be performed at the
end of every day in a costly and tedious process, or
the company would risk losing important data. In
one of the hardware crashes, it took several months
to recover the lost data. In all, the HP 3000 system
experienced a total of three major hardware failures,
resulting in a total of six days of complete downtime.
That was not enough. The COBOL programs that
were developed in the early 1980s and maintained by
Income’s in-house IT team also broke multiple times,
halted the systems, and caused temporary interrup-
tions. In addition, the IT team found developing new
products in COBOL to be quite cumbersome and the
time taken to launch new products ranged from a
few weeks to months.

However, the not so good news is that many still approach digital as “nice” or “cool to have” rather than treating it as an important aspect for business. Digital is no longer good to have: either be digital or be extinct – there is simply no other option.

Case Study: News UK Transformed Its
Data Center To Become More Agile
by Sudhanshu Bhandari, December 6, 2013
For: Infrastructure
& Operations
Professionals
Key Takeaways
Resist Shortcuts When Planning Your Data Center Transformation
Data center virtualization and investments in high-density compute infrastructure
alone aren’t enough to get real, measurable benefits from a hybrid cloud data center.
Organizations need to carry out data center transformation of all aspects of IT
infrastructure delivery landscape.
Focus On Service Management As The Foundation Of Data Center
Transformation
Service management processes will play an important role in managing the future IT
infrastructure landscape, which is hybrid mix of legacy systems, private clouds, and the
public cloud. As a result, it’s important to have efficient processes and tools to facilitate
the data center transformation and manage the new IT portfolio.
Avoid Creating Legacy IT Infrastructure Silos
Older technologies will limit your ability to innovate and will lead to overhead that will
keep you busy in day-to-day operations. Step-by-step transformation to phase out legacy
silos should be the focus for I&O pros and doing constant innovation will give immense
business benefits and competitive edge.
