"Beyond Aesthetics: The Functional Aspects of Graphic Design"Embtel Solutions
Graphic design is a dynamic and ever-evolving field that plays a crucial role in visual communication. It involves the art of creating visually appealing content through the use of typography, imagery, and layout. Graphic designers are responsible for crafting everything from eye-catching logos and business cards to compelling website layouts and engaging social media posts.
One of the fundamental principles of graphic design is balance. Designers must strike a harmonious equilibrium between various elements, such as color, shape, and space, to create a pleasing composition. This balance can be achieved through various design principles, including contrast, alignment, proximity, and repetition.
Typography is another vital aspect of graphic design. The choice of fonts, their size, and how they are arranged can significantly impact the message a design conveys. Typography sets the tone and mood, enhancing the overall aesthetics of the piece.
Color theory is equally essential. Different colors evoke distinct emotions and can influence the way an audience perceives a design. Designers must choose colors that resonate with the intended message and the target audience.
Graphic design extends beyond aesthetics; it must also be functional. A well-designed piece should guide the viewer's attention, convey information clearly, and encourage engagement.
In the digital age, graphic design is omnipresent, playing a pivotal role in web design, advertising, branding, and user experience. The evolution of design software and technology has opened up endless possibilities for creativity and innovation, making graphic design an exciting and dynamic profession.

6. PHOTOSHOP
Photoshop is an essential tool for any graphic designer. With its diverse capabilities, it is used for a plethora of different means.
Every time I work on a project, I use Photoshop in some capacity; whether it is to make minor adjustments to an image, adjust the color or effects of an image, or taking several images and creating something brand new.
7. Fantasy Football Flyer
This image was created for a client’s fantasy football league
promotion. He was looking for a new way to distribute the
information with a simple design.
In order to create this graphic, I found a stock image of a football
on football turf. The grass of the turf was a consistent shade of
green. To create the shadow effect of the background, I created
a selection that included the football and duplicated the layer.
To darken the background, I adjusted the brightness and the
contrast of the layer. I applied a gradient to the field to make the
foreground brighter than the background.
To create the metal effect for the headline, I created a new
layer and then filled it with black. Then, I used the noise filter to
create black and white dots. Motion blur was applied to give
the appearance of brushed metal. Finally, it was applied as a
clipping mask to the text. The rest of the text was added and
then the file was flattened to reduce file size.
8. 2013 OKC Thunder Poster
This Photoshop composite was a personal project
commemorating the 2013-2014 Oklahoma City Thunder’s
season. The dominant colors are blue and orange, the
colors of the team.
Various images were selected of different players for this
project. I used Photoshop to mask out the background in
each picture. Then, I adjusted the contrast, brightness,
and color saturation to each image to emphasize the blue
and orange in the uniform.
A stock image of lightning was used for the background
and I placed a blue overlay to make the sky the color
I desired. I created the rain effect by adding noise and
adding a motion blur filter to the layer.
The banner and text were placed on top of the images and
then the elements were skewed to their current position.
Finally, the ball in Westbrook’s hand was masked out and
placed on top of the banner to complete the project.
9. Undercuts Branding
Uppercuts was a business aimed at lawn work
and landscaping. The logo (top) was created by
combining multiple images of grass. Then the
lettering was used to mask out specific parts of the
grass image. When creating the mask, it was made
so that some of the grass blades extended over the
letter. This, combined with the smudge tool, created
the effect of the grass subtly hanging over the edge.
The business card (middle) was created by using
the same logo and placing it on top of a stock
image of mowed grass. A drop shadow was used
to blend the Undercuts logo on top of the grass.
The color of the text was pulled from the logo to
create a consistent look.
The letterhead (below) was created by using the
company logo and applying a drop shadow to blend
it. Then, the stripe was created by performing the
same steps used to create the logo. Then the text
was applied to match the color scheme of the logo.

10. Basketball isn’t the only thing thundering down
The Great Plains. Over the past two decades, the
Oklahoma City area has transformed itself into a
sprawling urban community. By investing in small
businesses, expanding infrastructure, and keeping
tax-rates low, Oklahoma City has become a featured
destination for diverse businesses of all sizes.
In Oklahoma, we know a little something about
exceeding expectations. Whether it is on the court
or off, Oklahoma City is a powerhouse, with great
potential. Together, we can all be champions. Won’t
you think about joining our team in Oklahoma City?
Rising above the rest.

Oklahoma City Small Business Poster
This poster was created using
a personal photograph and
Photoshop. The sky around the
building was masked out. Then, a
duplicate of the image was placed
behind the building. An orange box
was placed behind the building
and then the text was used to
mask out parts of the orange box
to show the sky.
The image was placed in InDesign
where the copy was applied. The
logo was created in Illustrator and
then placed in the InDesign file.
11. Banner Placement in Photo
This image was created to demonstrate the process of adding in a material such as a banner to an existing photograph. The Patriots banner was created in Photoshop and then exported as an image file. Then, that image was placed in the current photograph of the Boston city streets.
The image was then warped to match the perspective of the building. A drop shadow was applied to blend the banner on top of the building. Finally, noise was added to the banner to add to the effect of it being a part of the photograph.
12. INDESIGN
InDesign is the lead program for
document publishing. Over the
course of my design career, I have
used InDesign for a variety of
different projects including: mailers,
fliers, business cards, posters,
stationary, and even this portfolio.
A vast majority of the projects we have
created at Majority Designs were in
InDesign. This allows us to create
files for the appropriate printers and
set up the files according to printer
specifications.
13. Clearwater Campaign
Clearwater WORLDWIDE
This was a project for a course in Strategic Communication
Campaigns. We were tasked to develop a campaign for a topic of
our choosing. Our group chose to promote a campaign aimed at
reducing plastic water bottle consumption.
For our project, we created collateral such as a mock website as well
as brochures to be passed out. Some of the artwork was created in
Photoshop and then the components were assembled in InDesign.

16. Yosemite National Park
On June 30, 1864, President Abraham
Lincoln signed a bill granting Yosemite Valley
and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias
to the state of California as a public trust.
Eventaully, due largely to the conservtionist
efforts of John Muir, Yosemite National Park
was officially created on October 1, 1890.
Public visitation exceeded one million in
1954 for the first time, and by 1976 over
two million people visited Yosemite. In the
mid-1990s, visitation topped four million.
In the early 1970s, the National Park Service
established one-way road traffic patterns,
eliminated cars in the far east end of the
Valley, offered free shuttle bus transportation
in the Valley, converted the parking lot
in front of the Valley Visitor Center to a
pedestrian mall, and generally encouraged
visitors to enjoy the park by walking or using
public transportation.
Fun Facts about Yosemite:
– Thomas Ayres and James M. Hutchins were
Yosemite’s first visitors in 1855.
– The Yosemite Grant to help conserve the park
was signed by Abraham Lincoln on the 30 of
June, 1864.
– Yosemite National Park covers 1189 square
miles, much of which is uninhabited .
– Yosemite was the first park set aside by the U S
government for preservation and protection,
even before Yellowstone.
– 20% of California’s 7000 plant species are
located in Yosemite National Park.
– Mt. Lyell, at 13114 ft., is Yosemite’s
highest point.
– Yosemite Falls, at 2425 feet, is the highes t
waterfall in North America and third highest in
the world.

National Park Fliers
This was a school project aimed
at the development of promotional
materials for the National Park
Service. This images were placed

was created and formatted in
InDesign.
This project involved setting up
both a printed version of the file
as well as an interactive PDF for
people to view online and link
them to various online content.
Bryce Canyon National Park
Bryce Canyon, famous for its horseshoe-shaped
amphitheaters carved from the
eastern edge of southern Utah’s Paunsaugunt
Plateau, became a national park in 1924.
The erosional force of frost-wedging and the
dissolving power of rainwater have shaped
the colorful limestone rocks into slot canyons,
windows, fins, and spires called “hoodoos”
that create a wondrous landscape of mazes.
Fun Facts...
– On a clear day, the visibility at Bryce Can-yon
often exceeds 100 miles.
– In most rural areas of the United States,
2500 stars can be seen on a clear night. At
Bryce Canyon, 7500 stars can be distin-guished.
– The geologic term “hoodoo” lives on at
Bryce Canyon as perpetuated by early
geologists who thought the rock forma-tions
could cast a spell with their spires
and arches.
– Bryce Canyon National Park is home to
three species of endangered wildlife: the
Utah Prairie Dog, California Condor, and
the Southwestern Willow Flycatcher.

18. ILLUSTRATOR
Illustrator is the unsung hero of my
design experience. For the majority
of my work, Illustrator has played
some role in each piece.
The software affords an easy way
to create simple shapes and vector
objects that are easily imported to
other design programs.
Typically, I will use Illustrator to make
complex shapes or create logos for
the projects I am working on.
19. Comic Book Project
This artwork is several years
old, but they are still one of my
favorite pieces.
The project was to take a comic
book character and create a
poster with them by entirely
using Illustrator.
The main characters were
created using different methods
such as: creating shapes and
then using various fills, gradients,
and gradient mesh to colorize
the character.
20. Explore new paths with the essential vector
tool
Create distinctive vector artwork for any proj-ect.
Used by design professionals worldwide,
Adobe® Illustrator® software provides precision
and power with sophisticated drawing tools,
expressive natural brushes, a host of time-savers,
and seamless integration with other
Adobe professional design applications and
easily create artwork for multiple uses.
Complement your design
Craft vector assets for use in any design proj-ect,
from logos and branding to graphics for
advertising, packaging, and environments.
Advanced typography
Design beautiful text for virtually any media
with professional controls for paragraph and
character styles, support for OpenType®, trans-parent
eects, and more.
Create beautiful websites
Design graphics for banners, web pages, and
interactive experiences, or lay out your entire
website.
Get your ideas in motion
Create original graphics and motion paths for
animation, and design artwork for broadcast
graphics, titles, station IDs, and bumpers.
Vector Flyer
The basis for this project was to
create a flyer promoting the Graphic
Design program at Oklahoma City
Community College using only
Illustrator.
The logo for the college was created
in Illustrator and then imported into
the file. The Image of the earth
in the background was created
entirely in Illustrator. It was created
by creating complex shapes and
using the circular shape as a
clipping mask. From there, detail
was applied to the color via fills,
gradient, and gradient mesh.
21. Life Saver 5K T-Shirt
This was created for a
competition to design the
t-shirt given to participants
in the Oklahoma City
Community College’s Life
Saver 5K.The actual artwork
was created in Illustrator.
The mock up of the t-shirt
was created by importing the
design into Photoshop and
placing it onto the t-shirt.
This design was selected as
the winner and was produced
for that year’s race.
22. PHOTOGRAPHY
In no way do I consider myself a
professional photographer. That
being said, I think having a firm
understanding of a DSLR camera
and how to operate one is essential
for anyone in the creative field.
Understanding the composition of
a photograph can help transform
your designs from mundane to
extraordinary.
In my free time, I love to act as a
amateur photographer and take
pictures of people and places. I’ve
included some of the best pictures in
this portfolio because I think certain
photography skills can prove to be a
vital asset.
The following samples were taken
with a Canon Rebel T3i using
different lenses, filters, exposures,
ISO settings, and shutter speeds.
