1. The Newman Center houses
the Lamont School of Music
located on the southern end
of University of Denver
campus.
Lamont is home to less than
300 students, which allows
all students the opportunity
to perform throughout their
college careers.
Lamont also offers
extraordinary resources for
students of all majors.
2. In one of the main hallways of the Newman Center for Performing Arts, there is a display called
“Birth of a Dream”, which illustrates the creation of the building and the programs that take
place within it. Without the dream of one man, Lamont would not have been possible.
3. Located within the Joy
Burns Plaza is the M.
Allan Frank Family Box
Office.
Even though the majority
of the productions
hosted at the Newman
Center are free of cost,
guests are asked to take
a ticket at the Box Office
so the faculty can keep
track of audience size.
4. Performances range from opera,
musical theater and ensembles to jazz
and rock and roll. Even though
students are the typical performers,
some professors also display their
work for audiences.
5. The stages that are not being
used are reserved for music
students to practice for auditions,
in order to get the feel of the
stage.
“I love practicing on a real stage
because it helps with my nerves
more than just practicing in one
of the practice rooms”, said
Kassandra Lopez, a second-year
music student.
6. The practice rooms that are scattered
throughout the hallways of the Newman
Center are available for all students to use,
but are on priority for music students.
“I can usually find a room once or twice a
week in Newman to practice”, said Erin
Agee, a non-music major.
7. On any given day,
multiple practice rooms
will be full until late
hours of the night.
“I’m usually there until
midnight like most of
my friends. It’s fun
though because when
you walk the hallway,
you get a taste of what
everyone else is
playing”, said Lopez.
8. Lockers in Lamont are available
to music students only. Non-
music students store their
instruments in their dorms or
cars.
“I store my flute under bed in
the dorms, which keeps it out of
the way of my roommate’s stuff”,
stated Agee.
9. Another resource open to all
students is the listening lab,
where students can enjoy and
study old compositions. It is
found in the music library on the
first floor of the Newman
Center.
10. The music library is lined with
stacks of compositions that
can be rented out for a 24-
hour period.
“The music library is smaller
but it’s much quieter and
more calm than the library on
the main end of campus”, said
Mary Hannig, a music student
at Lamont.
11. Students of all majors can
also benefit from music
lessons offered by Lamont
students.
Hannig teaches beginner
guitar lessons to other
students and family
members of the surrounding
Denver community.
12. “Teaching guitar lessons is one of
my favorite jobs as student because
others get so much joy out of music
and I get to fine tune my basic
guitar skills on a regular basis”, said
Hannig
13. The Joy Burns Plaza invites students
of all majors to enjoy the
opportunities found throughout the
Newman Center.
“My friends and I hang out in the Joy
Burns Plaza even though we aren’t
music students because it offers a
quiet place to talk or do homework
that’s hard to find in other buildings
on campus”, said Agee.
