Presentation given by Hannah Chalmers of the UKCCSRC on "Capacity Building in the UK Carbon Capture and Storage Research Centre" at the EC FP7 Projects: Leading the way in CCS implementation event, London, 14-15 April 2014
The European Commission has recently estimated the investment needs in energy (electricity and gas) infrastructure of European importance to be about €200 billion up to 2020 . The Commission has also stressed that, under a business as usual scenario, almost half of these investments are at risk of not being delivered in time or at all, leaving a gap of about €100 billion.
The main identified obstacles are problems related to permit granting, regulatory issues and financing; and those cannot be fully overcome by the existing measures.
In this context, the European Commission has proposed an Energy Infrastructure package, which we introduce in this presentation.

MediaHub is the trusted multimedia website bringing together content from many different sources including several Jisc initiatives. In addition, image, video and audio sources are searched from external websites and presented alongside hosted collections. Finding material is no longer the challenge but having it presented in a practical and relevant way.
Over the course of several years, a bank of supporting material has been amassed which will be shown at Digifest, demonstrating the many and varied ways such resources are being put to use. These have been provided by members of the education community to share with others using the site – reviews, case studies and even film trails. A new feature also enables user-uploaded images.
Other initiatives to enliven the material include blogposts to focus on the hidden depths of the site and tweets to highlight more topical themes. This drop-in session allows those attending the festival to see the possibilities of using this rich and rewarding material in their learning, teaching or research from illustrating assignments to projecting video within an academic environment.
The other important connection made with MediaHub is to other related Jisc services – BUFVC and Jisc Digital Media are linked on the site for additional support and guidance on using multimedia – providing a comprehensive experience.

Research and Development priorities to support a UK sustainable aviation fuel...KTN
The publication was developed by members of Sustainable Aviation with additional input from the Department of Transport, Ministry of Defence, NNFCC and Joanna Bauldreay. Four main themes were identified along the supply chain as being critical to accelerating the SAF industry in the UK:
1. Feedstock & Sustainability
2. Process & economics
3. Infrastructure
4. Technical specification
Industry is keen to raise awareness of the need to focus on supporting the whole supply chain from early stage feedstock research to ensuring the UK has strong capabilities to conduct fit for purpose testing on new fuels. Focusing effort and investment on downstream R&D carries significant risk, whereas supporting the whole process to include fit for purpose testing will expedite the market entry of the new fuels.
The UK imports 70% of aviation turbine fuel and whilst developments and investment support aircraft electrification, in the short-term liquid fuel will remain a requirement for regional aircraft but critical for longer haul flights where electrification is not an option. Indigenous production of sustainable liquid fuels is needed now to ensure fuel resilience and significant import substitution. They are also required to ensure the UK is meeting carbon emission targets set by ICAO (50% reduction by 2050) plus support the UK’s Clean Growth Strategy.
The 12-page document was created by KTN’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel Special Interest Group (SAF SIG) on behalf of industry and government.

Around 30 teams composed by students, faculty and technical staff from several
Portuguese universities created energy efficiency plans to their campuses buildings and
12 finalists were selected. When compared to the present situation, the implementation
of the 12 finalists’ projects would result in annual energy savings of 1.9 GWh and 1.09
ton CO2 avoided. Economic analysis shows that the majority of the suggested actions
are cost effective, with an average return period of 5 years.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
