In Greece, New Year's Eve traditions include children singing carols and receiving money and sweets. On January 1st, which is also St. Basil's day, children believe St. Basil brings presents at night while they sleep. Families have festive meals including stuffed meats and rice, a symbol of prosperity. After the meal, they eat Vasilopita cake which has a coin inside, and whoever finds the coin will have good luck in the new year. People also believe the first guest of the new year brings luck. Gambling is considered lucky on New Year's day. A pomegranate symbolizes prosperity and is broken at the doorstep on New Year's day for good wishes.
