Thanksgiving
●A holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in
order to give thanks and spend time with family and friends.
●It is a day to remember all the good things you have in your life
and show gratitude.
The first Thanksgiving
Traditionally, people believe the first Thanksgiving was in 1621.
In 1620, Pilgrims from England arrived in Plymouth, Massachusetts
on a ship called the Mayflower.
The First Thanksgiving
The first year was very hard and half of
the pilgrims died from diseases and
malnutrition.
Squanto, from the Native American tribe
Pawtuxet, helped the pilgrims grow
their own food.
In fall of 1621, they celebrated their first
successful harvest and had a feast
with the Native Americans.
Unfortunately, this is one of the only
stories of peace between the settlers
and the Native Americans.
How is Thanksgiving celebrated today?
Many towns have a parade on Thanksgiving day. The most famous one is Macy’s
Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.
People walk down the streets of NYC with floats and giant balloons of characters
from popular movies and TV shows, and famous musicians perform.

Many high school and college marching bands are
invited to march in the parade each year.

The parade always ends with Santa Claus because Thanksgiving marks the official start
of the Christmas season in the USA.

The Presidential Turkey Pardon
Each year the President pardons a
turkey and sends it to live on a
farm instead of eating it.
The Thanksgiving Dinner
Most families spend the entire day in the kitchen preparing a large meal.
Typical dishes include turkey, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, corn casserole,
sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, dinner rolls, cranberry sauce, and stuffing.
The most common dessert is pie.

called Black Friday.

Many stores open as early as 4
AM and some even open
Thursday evening and stay
open the entire night.
