Orthodox Christmas in Macedonia is celebrated on January 7th according to the Julian calendar. Festivities begin on January 5th with caroling, bonfires in parks, and eating traditional foods. On Christmas Eve families have a special meat-free meal and bring an oak log called a "badnik" into their home. Christmas Day involves church services followed by a large feast with roasted meats, pies, breads, and sweets. People greet each other with "Christ is born" and celebrate for three days after Christmas Day.
