Letter from the
President
This week is committee
meeting week, a very
important part of our club
program as it gives you the
opportunity to make a
difference to our local and
international community.
The committees form the
heart of the club – it is each
committee which decides
which areas we can help
with, and how to go about
doing so. What projects and
activities we take on very
much depends on you –
which areas you think we
should be concentrating on.
So I urge you to endeavour to
make it to our committee
meetings, and to participate
in the email meetings as well.
Feedback from our trial of
alternating face-to-face
committee meetings with
email meetings has been that
2 months of email meetings
has not been sufficient time
to determine whether it is a
beneficial way to conduct
meetings or not, so we will
continue alternating the
meetings for a few more
months until you all feel able
to give feedback as to
whether it is working or not.
Ultimately, it all comes down
to what will help you
contribute easiest. Your
feedback is very important,
and I hope that you will all
give feedback to your
committee directors as to
what is and isn't working in
your committee.
Yours in Rotary service,
Simone
Last Week's
Meeting
President Mike & Robyn
Penny from Rotary Club of
East Perth attended our
meeting to inform us of a
passive fundraiser in the
form of a “fancy donation
box” named a Money
Spinner (see http://
www.moneyspinner.com.au),
which can be placed
permanently in shopping
centres and taken out to
Rotary community events,
such as sausage sizzles and
fairs.
The total cost of the Money
Spinner is in the region of
$1,500, which Mike has been
recouping in around 11
weeks of use. Ken Collins
has spoken to Claremont
Quarter as to whether the
club is able to place one there.
Di Collins is liaising with the
Volunteer Grant people to
obtain a ruling on whether
the cost of the Money Spinner
is able to come from the
Volunteer Grant the club has
received.
Since November is Rotary
Foundation month, our own
Ken Collins, a Past Rotary
International Director and
Past Rotary Foundation
Trustee, gave a brief
overview of the programs of
the Rotary Foundation,
highlighting the ones our
club and club members have
participated in.
The Rotary Foundation is the
only charity where 100% of
funds donated are used for a

charitable purpose –
administrative costs are
covered by returns on
investing the funds for 3
years before they are released
for use. As such, Ken urged
us all to consider making the
Rotary Foundation our
charity of choice, and he
discussed the various forms
of recognition that are made
for cumulative donations of
US$1,000 and above.
It was with great pleasure
that Ken presented Claire
and Daniel Forsdyke with
Paul Harris Fellows, in
recognition of contributions
they have recently made to
the Foundation.
This Week's
Meeting
In addition to our committee
meetings, Jenny Gill will give
a short presentation about an
exciting fundraising idea she
has. This could well be a
signature event for our club,
so please do come along to
hear what Jenny has to say.
Magnifying
Microscope
Project
Our signature project is
going from strength to
strength. The Karrinyup
Club donated microscopes to
Marmion Primary School
during the week and are
talking to a second school.
A lovely, lengthy letter was
received from Ardross
Primary School saying they
had been introduced to the
microscopes by Watercorp
and how much they would
like to have a set. The
request has been passed on
to the Rotary Club of
Applecross for their
consideration.
An email received during the
week from WA Chief
Scientist reads:
Totally marvellous everyone!
With all best wishes
Lyn (heart singing with joy re
this wonderful program!)

Organised by Brother James
and Debbie Cash, it is
impossible to sum up the night
in a few sentences as the
passion, enthusiasm,
c o m m i t m e n t a n d
overwhelming impact these
pilgrimages have had on the
participants (students and
parents) is immeasurable.
Moving films, photographs
and stories were dotted
throughout the night.
Heartfelt congratulations
James and Debbie on the
outstanding job you are doing
in taking these young people
on these Pilgrimages of Service
and bringing them back with
maturity, compassion and
direction in their lives.
I am reminded of the title of a
book by the Rev. Allan Male
titled ‘It’s better to Build a Boy
than Mend a Man’. This of
course is true of girls/women
too.
The wonderful young
headmaster of the Angel
Academy School in
Kathmandu, Jotik and his
fiancée Praba arrived late
Friday afternoon from Nepal
and will be coming along to
our club on 24th November to
give us a brief summary on
what is happening in the
School and with the Refuge for
street children and old people,
both of which we have heard a
little of from James and
Debbie.
The Pilgrimage of Hope
follows very closely the
principals of Mother Teresa
and seeks sponsorship to run
the school and refuge. Our
club is assisting with
managing the donations
through Rotary Australia
World Community Service
which allows for tax
deductibility.
Mother Teresa once said that
“Love is giving until it hurts”.
By this she means not only
money but actions and service.
Communities
Moving
Forward Project
At the Nepalese Reunion
Brother James introduced Ken
and Di Collins to an
outstanding your leader,
Calum Foulner, aged 22 who
has founded the Communities
Moving Forward (CMF)
project.
Calum and his team of young
friends from school have taken
on assisting the Nepalese in a
rural area near the Tibetan
border. The aim is education
and sustainability by
developing an apple orchard.
The CMF project is a new

Registration of riders and fund-raising are going very well, but
without the requisite number of volunteers Main Roads and

VOLUNTEER – FAX BACK FORM
SPECIAL REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEER ROAD MARSHALLS FOR SUNDAY MORNING
21 NOVEMBER
Volunteers make The Santos Great Bike Ride happen!!! Rider registrations and fund raising
are going very well, BUT WE ARE SHORT OF THE NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO
ENABLE THE RIDE TO GO AHEAD SAFELY. We are seeking over 150 more volunteers!!
Volunteers are an integral and crucial component to the success of the Santos Great Bike Ride.
As a volunteer you will be contributing to this success AND also assisting three great charities to
continue their life saving work: Heart Foundation, Hope for Children and St John of God Health
Care Horizon House Project AND you will also receive a volunteer t-shirt, lanyard & snack pack!!
We require Road Marshals The Santos Great Bike Ride [53km] goes from Perth City around
the Swan River via Fremantle & South Perth and the Causeway. Two or more Road Marshals are
required at each intersection around the course. Your job as a Marshal is to inform motorists of
the community bike ride and that there may be slight delays. You are not required to direct traffic
and you are not required to get into any discussions with drivers regarding to road closures. You
will be needed at your position for a set time and will be relieved by operational management
crews throughout the event as the Roads are reopened behind the last participant. It is important
that you are able to remain at your location for the duration of the required time frame to ensure
the safety of the event participants. Road Marshals must be 18+ unless they are accompanied by
a guardian. For more information including ride route map see www.greatbikeride.com.au

VOLUNTEER – FAXBACK FORM SPECIAL REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEER ROAD MARSHALLS FOR SUNDAY MORNING 21 NOVEMBER Volunteers make The Santos Great Bike Ride happen!!! Rider registrations and fund raising are going very well, BUT WE ARE SHORT OF THE NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO ENABLE THE RIDE TO GO AHEAD SAFELY. We are seeking over 150 more volunteers!! Volunteers are an integral and crucial component to the success of the Santos Great Bike Ride. As a volunteer you will be contributing to this success AND also assisting three great charities to continue their life saving work: Heart Foundation, Hope for Children and St John of God Health Care Horizon House Project AND you will also receive a volunteer t-shirt, lanyard & snack pack!! We require Road Marshals The Santos Great Bike Ride [53km] goes from Perth City around the Swan River via Fremantle & South Perth and the Causeway. Two or more Road Marshals are required at each intersection around the course. Your job as a Marshal is to inform motorists of the community bike ride and that there may be slight delays. You are not required to direct traffic and you are not required to get into any discussions with drivers regarding to road closures. You will be needed at your position for a set time and will be relieved by operational management crews throughout the event as the Roads are reopened behind the last participant. It is important that you are able to remain at your location for the duration of the required time frame to ensure the safety of the event participants. Road Marshals must be 18+ unless they are accompanied by a guardian. For more information including ride route map see www.greatbikeride.com.au !
