Aniket Bhatt & Yali Aviram discovered new fossils in Ethiopia dating back 4.4 million years old that provide insights into the transition of early hominins from tree dwellers to terrestrial walkers. Dubbed Ardipithecus ramidus, the mosaic organism possessed features of both apes and humans, including grasping big toes for climbing but a pelvis adapted for walking. These discoveries help clarify how traits evolved in early hominins and complicate the view of a linear pathway from apes to humans.
