Miles’ role is not merely confined inside the walls
of New College; I ask him to outline what New
College’s contribution to Oxford is today. As an
active member of Conference of Colleges, chairing
the Development Panel and the Disabilities
Sub-Group, he believes that ‘to be isolated from
the University is a profoundly bad thing.’ Yet he
also says ‘I will, ’till my last breath, believe that
New College is the best college in the University
of Oxford – but this is not at the expense of the
University.’ He believes New College can play a role
in ‘defending the tutorial system which is in need
of defending,’ and can ‘help find the appropriate
balance between teaching and research,’ in a
positive-sum rather than zero-sum game.
I ask if it’s too early to predict what Miles’ legacy
will be? ‘I think that it would be pretentious and
un-New College to think in these terms’ he
responds. But the biggest feature of this
Wardenship will be finishing the new Mansfield
Road Development. Miles is not focusing only on
the bricks and mortar, but hopes his legacy will
be quads that are ‘human, active, open, used,
enjoyed’ and ‘will not feel like a hall of residence
somewhere outside the college, but will actually
feel like a part of the college.’ This all starts by
insisting that William of Wykeham be there to
watch over future generations of students, and
remind them that Manners Makyth Man.
something.’ It seems to me that Miles’ strategic
experience is making a welcome impact on
college life. Nonetheless, Miles is conscious that
he is not at New College to be a ‘Chief Executive
Warden’. He believes he is here to ‘catalyse, not
direct’ and finds help in his understanding of
‘New College’s genetic code’: a code of Manners
Makyth Man, of tradition and diversity, of social
conscience and occasional non-conformity.
As I start my year as JCR President, it’s a chance to
compare notes with the Warden who was Steward
(President equivalent) of the JCR in 1975. I ask Miles
if New College has changed fundamentally since
then: ‘Not at all. I felt it might have coming in…
but when I came back I found it fundamentally
unchanged.’ When Miles was Steward of the JCR,
he was not occupied by group chats, emails and
Facebook pages (part of my daily dosage); I ask
him about balancing modernity and tradition. ‘The
presumption always has to be in favour of tradition,
but with a sceptical, enquiring, curious, questioning
mindset which allows you to introduce modernity,
if and when you feel the organisation needs it.’ He
summarises: ‘you can be the most modern university
in the world, but you can still wear a gown.’
STARTING SECOND YEAR
Conleth Burns (JCR President) interviews Miles Young (Warden) as
they both look to their second year in Oxford.

welcome me to the Tower Room of the
Lodgings for a conversation with the occupant,
Miles Young. Exactly a year ago, I was a ‘Fresher
Lawyer’ and Miles was the ‘Fresher Warden’;
he, the first business person to be Head of
House at an Oxford college; I, the first student
from my school to make it to Oxford. One year
on, I ask Miles to look back on the first year.
He describes how it was ‘frightening at first…
coming back to Britain after 25 years and being
out of the academic world for a very long time.’ I
am sure that the 135 JCR and 111 MCR Freshers
who started this week would have experienced
very similar feelings. It took a lunch party with
his partner Lammy and some of his Oxford
contemporaries, before his installation, for Miles
to feel ‘at home’ in his new role.
Looking around at the 46 Coats of Arms in the
Tower Room, I probe Miles on what his experience
at Ogilvy & Mather will bring to the Wardenship:
‘Clearly one comes with a different way of looking
at things, the fact that we’ve now got a “content
officer”, the fact that we have an access strategy
(which we honestly didn’t have before) means

WIDENING ACCESS
NOVEMBER 2017 | NEW COLLEGE NEWS
he work that the college does in order to
widen participation to the University
continues to develop, evolve, and grow. This has
meant that the past year has been a busy, but
extremely productive, period of time. A major
focus for our year revolved around the realisation
that we must work with teachers more closely.
Consequently, in July 2017, we were thrilled to
host an inaugural Teachers’ Conference. The one
day event, entitled ‘Oxford University: Open to
All’, incorporated short presentations from Oxford
University staff and students, a panel discussion,
and a keynote address from New College alumni,
Katharine Birbalsingh. The day also allowed us to
build relationships with schools from across the
country and to spread the message that Oxford
University truly is, ‘open to all’.
During this event, we also officially launched
our exciting new sustained-contact initiative.
New College’s ‘Step Up’ programme is designed
to inspire and support state-school students
throughout Years 11, 12 and 13. The programme
is designed to ensure that state-school students
are fully equipped and effectively supported
so that they recognise Oxford as a realistic
and achievable option for them in the future.
Working closely with schools over a long period
of time, rather than focusing on isolated, one-
off visits, will ensure that students and teachers
receive sufficient support to build a competitive
application. In its pilot year, we are working with
11 schools from across the UK and we hope that
the programme will grow in its second year. If
you are a teacher, or are connected to a state-
school in some way, and would like your school
to be considered for the programme, please
email admissions@new.ox.ac.uk.
The Step Up programme has worked alongside
an inspiring social media campaign from the
JCR. Their Facebook page, ‘New: Over the
Wall’ provides candid and honest insights into
life at New College, and helps to challenge the
many myths that can so easily alter a person’s
perception of an Oxford University student. You
can see the stories by visiting www.facebook/
newoverthewall.
We have also been pleased to welcome Misha
Brazier-Tope to the Academic Office. Misha joins
New College as the Communications and Access
Officer, enabling us to enhance our widening
participation work.
Since January 2017, we have worked with an
impressive 468 state-school students. We hope
that they are all inspired to become part of the
future of this historic institution.
St Ebbes Primary School, near Folly Bridge, Oxford, visited New College at 11am on 20 March 2017, as part of their school project on college’ crests. The trip was arranged

NEW COLLEGE NEWS | NOVEMBER 2017
New College has embarked on an
ambitious scheme to redevelop the
Savile Road site to create a new living
and working space in a stunning new
architectural setting. The largest
development since the New Buildings
on Holywell Street in the late 1800s, the
project will:
• Enable the College to house all
undergraduates who wish to live in for
all of their course
– an additional 70 student rooms (108
in total on the site) will be created,
thereby allowing the College to offer
high-quality accommodation to all
undergraduates.
• Provide a state-of-the-art flexible study
and teaching space
– workspace for students to study on
their own or in small groups as well as a
space for lectures, symposia and break-
out group work.
• Create a multi-purpose arts and
performance venue
– a space for concerts, theatre,
exhibitions and talks, with associated
foyer areas and catering facilities.
• Build new facilities for New College School
– in reconfiguring the site, part of the
new building will house school dining
and kitchen facilities, classrooms for the
pre-prep and a new assembly hall.
The project has been made possible thanks
to an extraordinarily generous donation from
Chris Gradel (1990), after whom the site will
be named. The College is committing to fund
a third of the project and other donations
are being sought for major parties of the
development, including opportunities to
name specific elements. Please contact
Mark Curtis (mark.curtis@new.ox.ac.uk) for
further information.
Following extensive discussions with Historic
England and Oxford City Council, as well as
local consultations, the College expects to
submit a planning application by the end of
the year, with a view to commencing work
on site next summer. The complexities of
the site and the necessary phasing of the
project suggest that it will take three years to
complete the whole development.

New college magazine - November 2017

  • 2. Miles’ role is not merely confined inside the walls of New College; I ask him to outline what New College’s contribution to Oxford is today. As an active member of Conference of Colleges, chairing the Development Panel and the Disabilities Sub-Group, he believes that ‘to be isolated from the University is a profoundly bad thing.’ Yet he also says ‘I will, ’till my last breath, believe that New College is the best college in the University of Oxford – but this is not at the expense of the University.’ He believes New College can play a role in ‘defending the tutorial system which is in need of defending,’ and can ‘help find the appropriate balance between teaching and research,’ in a positive-sum rather than zero-sum game. I ask if it’s too early to predict what Miles’ legacy will be? ‘I think that it would be pretentious and un-New College to think in these terms’ he responds. But the biggest feature of this Wardenship will be finishing the new Mansfield Road Development. Miles is not focusing only on the bricks and mortar, but hopes his legacy will be quads that are ‘human, active, open, used, enjoyed’ and ‘will not feel like a hall of residence somewhere outside the college, but will actually feel like a part of the college.’ This all starts by insisting that William of Wykeham be there to watch over future generations of students, and remind them that Manners Makyth Man. something.’ It seems to me that Miles’ strategic experience is making a welcome impact on college life. Nonetheless, Miles is conscious that he is not at New College to be a ‘Chief Executive Warden’. He believes he is here to ‘catalyse, not direct’ and finds help in his understanding of ‘New College’s genetic code’: a code of Manners Makyth Man, of tradition and diversity, of social conscience and occasional non-conformity. As I start my year as JCR President, it’s a chance to compare notes with the Warden who was Steward (President equivalent) of the JCR in 1975. I ask Miles if New College has changed fundamentally since then: ‘Not at all. I felt it might have coming in… but when I came back I found it fundamentally unchanged.’ When Miles was Steward of the JCR, he was not occupied by group chats, emails and Facebook pages (part of my daily dosage); I ask him about balancing modernity and tradition. ‘The presumption always has to be in favour of tradition, but with a sceptical, enquiring, curious, questioning mindset which allows you to introduce modernity, if and when you feel the organisation needs it.’ He summarises: ‘you can be the most modern university in the world, but you can still wear a gown.’ STARTING SECOND YEAR Conleth Burns (JCR President) interviews Miles Young (Warden) as they both look to their second year in Oxford. Welcome... NEW COLLEGE NEWS | NOVEMBER 2017 Meeting Minds Alumni Weekend in Hong-Kong, March 2017 Gaude for Matriculation Years 2003-2005 NewCollegeSocietyYoungOldMember’sDrinks,June2017 oluche and Réglisse (the Warden’s dogs) welcome me to the Tower Room of the Lodgings for a conversation with the occupant, Miles Young. Exactly a year ago, I was a ‘Fresher Lawyer’ and Miles was the ‘Fresher Warden’; he, the first business person to be Head of House at an Oxford college; I, the first student from my school to make it to Oxford. One year on, I ask Miles to look back on the first year. He describes how it was ‘frightening at first… coming back to Britain after 25 years and being out of the academic world for a very long time.’ I am sure that the 135 JCR and 111 MCR Freshers who started this week would have experienced very similar feelings. It took a lunch party with his partner Lammy and some of his Oxford contemporaries, before his installation, for Miles to feel ‘at home’ in his new role. Looking around at the 46 Coats of Arms in the Tower Room, I probe Miles on what his experience at Ogilvy & Mather will bring to the Wardenship: ‘Clearly one comes with a different way of looking at things, the fact that we’ve now got a “content officer”, the fact that we have an access strategy (which we honestly didn’t have before) means C The College JCR Committee 1974-1975; The Warden was JCR Steward New College Society Garden Party, 24 June 2017 The Warden, Miles Young, and JCR President, Conleth Burns Front Cover Picture: The New College Society Garden Party and BBQ Lunch, Saturday 24 June 2017 Conleth Burns
  • 3. WIDENING ACCESS NOVEMBER 2017 | NEW COLLEGE NEWS he work that the college does in order to widen participation to the University continues to develop, evolve, and grow. This has meant that the past year has been a busy, but extremely productive, period of time. A major focus for our year revolved around the realisation that we must work with teachers more closely. Consequently, in July 2017, we were thrilled to host an inaugural Teachers’ Conference. The one day event, entitled ‘Oxford University: Open to All’, incorporated short presentations from Oxford University staff and students, a panel discussion, and a keynote address from New College alumni, Katharine Birbalsingh. The day also allowed us to build relationships with schools from across the country and to spread the message that Oxford University truly is, ‘open to all’. During this event, we also officially launched our exciting new sustained-contact initiative. New College’s ‘Step Up’ programme is designed to inspire and support state-school students throughout Years 11, 12 and 13. The programme is designed to ensure that state-school students are fully equipped and effectively supported so that they recognise Oxford as a realistic and achievable option for them in the future. Working closely with schools over a long period of time, rather than focusing on isolated, one- off visits, will ensure that students and teachers receive sufficient support to build a competitive application. In its pilot year, we are working with 11 schools from across the UK and we hope that the programme will grow in its second year. If you are a teacher, or are connected to a state- school in some way, and would like your school to be considered for the programme, please email admissions@new.ox.ac.uk. The Step Up programme has worked alongside an inspiring social media campaign from the JCR. Their Facebook page, ‘New: Over the Wall’ provides candid and honest insights into life at New College, and helps to challenge the many myths that can so easily alter a person’s perception of an Oxford University student. You can see the stories by visiting www.facebook/ newoverthewall. We have also been pleased to welcome Misha Brazier-Tope to the Academic Office. Misha joins New College as the Communications and Access Officer, enabling us to enhance our widening participation work. Since January 2017, we have worked with an impressive 468 state-school students. We hope that they are all inspired to become part of the future of this historic institution. St Ebbes Primary School, near Folly Bridge, Oxford, visited New College at 11am on 20 March 2017, as part of their school project on college’ crests. The trip was arranged by New College Old Member, Yan Wong (1992). Delegates listening to the panel discussion. • 4. NEW COLLEGE NEWS | NOVEMBER 2017 New College has embarked on an ambitious scheme to redevelop the Savile Road site to create a new living and working space in a stunning new architectural setting. The largest development since the New Buildings on Holywell Street in the late 1800s, the project will: • Enable the College to house all undergraduates who wish to live in for all of their course – an additional 70 student rooms (108 in total on the site) will be created, thereby allowing the College to offer high-quality accommodation to all undergraduates. • Provide a state-of-the-art flexible study and teaching space – workspace for students to study on their own or in small groups as well as a space for lectures, symposia and break- out group work. • Create a multi-purpose arts and performance venue – a space for concerts, theatre, exhibitions and talks, with associated foyer areas and catering facilities. • Build new facilities for New College School – in reconfiguring the site, part of the new building will house school dining and kitchen facilities, classrooms for the pre-prep and a new assembly hall. The project has been made possible thanks to an extraordinarily generous donation from Chris Gradel (1990), after whom the site will be named. The College is committing to fund a third of the project and other donations are being sought for major parties of the development, including opportunities to name specific elements. Please contact Mark Curtis (mark.curtis@new.ox.ac.uk) for further information. Following extensive discussions with Historic England and Oxford City Council, as well as local consultations, the College expects to submit a planning application by the end of the year, with a view to commencing work on site next summer. The complexities of the site and the necessary phasing of the project suggest that it will take three years to complete the whole development.
